New Names Announced For 4th Annual Good Food Pie Contest

NEW NAMES ANNOUNCED FOR 4th ANNUAL GOOD FOOD PIE CONTEST

Second Round of Star Studded Talent Selected for Judging Panel Includes Pasty Chef Sherry Yard

SANTA MONICA, CA, August 11, 2012 – KCRW (89.9FM and KCRW.com) is pleased to announce the second round of judges for the 4th Annual Good Food Pie Contest. Joining the current group of acclaimed food and pastry experts include Karen Hatfield (Co-owner and Pastry Chef – Hatfield’s and Sycamore Kitchen), Shannon Swindle (Pastry Chef de Cuisine – Craft), Dave Lieberman (Writer – OC Weekly), Joy the Baker (Blogger and Cookbook Author) and David LeFevre (Michelin–starred Chef and Co-owner of M.B. Post). Renowned Pasty Chef Sherry Yard has also joined our impressive panel of judges. Yard, who oversees all of the confections at Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant empire, is widely considered an authority on all things sweet.

KCRW kicked off with all things pie in early July with the launch of the Good Food Pie-A-Day series on the Good Food blog. The daily posts include pies from Evan, as well as photos and recipes from renowned pastry chefs, bakers, cookbook writers and listeners. KCRW will continue covering pie all summer long on-air with the series culminating at the Good Food Pie Contest at LACMA on September 8th.

For the second year, KCRW and Good Food are teaming up with LACMA to host the pie festivities. And, similar to last, a special LACMA inspired pie category will be created. In addition to the traditional Fruit, Nut, Cream/Chiffon/Mousse and Savory categories, contestants can enter pies in to the special Metropolis II category which will take inspiration from Chris Burden’s installation at LACMA. In addition, attendees wearing an apron will also receive free museum admittance to LACMA that day.

Now in its fourth year, the Good Food Pie Contest started in 2009 when KCRW Good Food Host and Chef Evan Kleiman set out to make pie. As a chef and restaurant owner for over 25 years, Evan finally realized it was time to take on the delicious dessert. That summer, Evan made a pie a day and blogged about it on KCRW’s Good Food Blog. Her passion set off a pie fervor across LA and the Good Food Pie Contest was born. Good Food has since become a platform for all things pie – Evan has interviewed pie experts from across the country on-air and continues to chronicle her pie adventures on the Good Food Blog.

Peabody Winner Produces Special Episode of KCRW Program UnFictional

SANTA MONICA, CA, July 19, 2012KCRW (89.9FM and KCRW.com) is pleased to announce American radio icon Joe Frank will return to KCRW to produce a special episode of UnFictional. Over the years, his work inspired millions from Ira Glass to David Sedaris and he is the recipient of many prestigious awards including an Emmy and Peabody Award. As a former producer at the station for sixteen years, Frank created several radio programs beginning with Joe Frank: Work In Progress.

“I’m excited to be returning to KCRW as a part of the outstanding public radio series UnFictional. During the last few months I’ve become a fan and look forward to each engaging, diverse and illuminating broadcast,” says Joe Frank.

Known for his ability to engage others through storytelling, Frank is an ideal fit for the UnFictional series. His monologues and radio dramas are known to be philosophical, often times funny and sometimes dark. ‘Dreamers’, the title of his upcoming episode, embraces all of these elements as it addresses questions regarding time and mortality.

‘Dreamers’ includes stories about a family’s tragic visit to Palestine, a man who attends a dinner party after learning he might be dying, and a contemplation of different perspectives on time,” explains Frank.

“I’m thrilled to be able to present new work from Joe Frank on my program UnFictional. Joe is one of the true public radio pioneers and without his incredible work, programs like mine wouldn’t exist,” says UnFictional Producer Bob Carlson. “Frank’s early programs introduced me to the power and possibilities of modern radio storytelling. Listening to one of his stories is a mesmerizing and disorienting experience. If you’ve never heard one before, you’re in for a trip.”

The episode will air LIVE this Friday at 7:30pm PST on 89.9 FM (in Southern California) or www.kcrw.com and again on Tuesday, July 24 at 2:30pm. “Solid Gold Easy Action” (DJ Dan Wilcox remix) is available for download.

SANTA MONICA, CA  July 6, 2012 — Glam rockers T. Rex influenced many of the bands that have passed through the studios of KCRW (89.9FM and KCRW.com) – from Beck to MGMT – and now, in conjunction with Spirit Music, DJs from the Los Angeles-based public radio station have remixed four of their tracks for the T. Rex vs. KCRW Soundclash” Remix EP.

All of the songs getting the remix treatment were Top 20 charting singles that came out in the wake of T. Rex’s seminal album “The Slider”. The EP closes with a cover of “Main Man” from “The Slider” recorded live in KCRW’s studios by Portugal. The Man.

Hear the tracks online now exclusively at kcrw.com/TREX and download a remix of “Solid Gold Easy Action that takes glam rock straight to the dancefloor.

“The subjects of KCRW’s Soundclashseries so far have been Femi Kuti, Ozomatli, David Bowie, and now the legendary Marc Bolan,” said KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley. It’s no simple task to reinvent a true rock ‘n’ roll classic, but our DJs have risen to the occasion with an inspired take on Bolan’s pop masterworks.”

The physical EP will be available on July 21, the 40th anniversary of the release of “The Slider”. KCRW is hosting a live performance from Portugal. The Man at the Annenberg Space for Photography and the first 500 people to arrive will get a free copy of the EP. (RSVP here)

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with KCRW, a world renowned curator of all things cool and classic, to celebrate the legacy of T. Rex.  The new remixes artfully push sonic envelopes just like Marc Bolan did decades ago and the concert will be a brilliant celebration of the timeless power of his music and legacy,” said Spirit Music Group President/CEO Mark Fried.

KCRW DJ and award-winning music supervisor Gary Calamar (True Blood/House/Dexter) gives “Children of the Revolution” an ambient groove to kick off the EP, followed by an industrial-inspired take on “Teenage Dream” from Chuck P. Dan Wilcox gives the salacious “Solid Gold Easy Action” a disco-fied remix with help from the beatmaster of LA band Pollyn, while Liza Richardson, also an acclaimed music supervisor (Friday Night Lights/ Parenthood), loops in famed DJ Harvey to add pounding percussion to the spirited rock anthem “20th Century Boy”.

Best of all, Bolan’s trademark vocals integrate seamlessly with all the updated versions of his songs, further proving his musical sensibilities are timeless.

KCRW Premieres Iggy Pop + Bethany Cosentino Duet for True Blood — “Let’s Boot and Rally”

KCRW Premieres Iggy Pop + Bethany Cosentino Duet
for True Blood — “Let’s Boot and Rally”

Stream it on the KCRW Music Blog now and tune in at 10:20am to hear the radio debut on Morning Becomes Eclectic

KCRW DJ Gary Calamar co-wrote the track which will air on the July 8 episode of the HBO show.

SANTA MONICA, CA, July 5, 2012 – Los Angeles public radio station KCRW (89.9FM and KCRW.com) is premiering “Let’s Boot and Rally”, a duet by Iggy Pop and Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino recorded for the July 8 episode of HBO’s True Blood. The track, co–written by KCRW DJ Gary Calamar, can be heard right now on KCRW’s Music Blog. Calamar also shares the story behind how the collaboration came about.

Calamar will join KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley to debut the track on air on Morning Becomes Eclectic at 10:20am this morning.

“To me, it sounds like classic punk rock Iggy. And Bethany’s vocals take it over the top. They sound beautiful together,” said Calamar.

Calamar has music supervised all five seasons of the show and has put together notable collaborations in the past. Neko Case and Nick Cave teamed up to do The Zombies “She’s Not There” and Karen Elson and Donovan took on “Season Of The Witch“.

This was a case of a tight deadline breeding inspiration. Each episode of True Blood is named after a song used in a show and rather than change the name of an episode called “Boot and Rally”, Calamar called on his friend, songwriter James Combs, to help craft a tune that would work.

Pop had already declared himself a fan of the vampire drama and signed up after hearing a demo. Best Coasts LA-based frontwoman jumped at the chance to sing with the punk hero and the rest is history.

Calamar received Grammy Award nominations three years in a row for his work on the True Blood soundtracks. His weekly KCRW show airs Sundays from 6 to 8pm PST.

KCRW DJ Raul Campos will serve as the official LAMC host for his 5th year for major events at
Central Park SummerStage and Celebrate Brooklyn At Prospect Park

LAMC runs from July 11 – 14 in New York City.

KCRW (89.9FM and KCRW.com) returns as the official presenting radio sponsor for the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC), with DJ Raul Campos taking the reins as host of the festivities for the 5th year in a row.

“KCRW has been a constant and, at times, singular voice for many of the bands that are featured at the LAMC,” said LAMC founder Tomas Cookman.  “We feel that there is no better radio outlet in the country to partner up with that understands the many different sounds and genres that fall under the LAMC and Latin Alternative umbrella as does KCRW.”

LAMC features up and coming Latin artists such as LA’s own La Santa Cecilia as well as established icons like Kinky. The annual conference, held in New York July 11 – 14, features concerts all over the city – including Central Park SummerStage and Celebrate Brooklyn at Prospect Park – as well as an array of panels.

“There is nothing else like LAMC, where the Latin world converges on NYC for 4 days of great music. It’s opened up my ears to so many new artists and gives us a chance to experience favorites that rarely venture to the U.S.,” said Ariana Morgenstern, producer of KCRW’s signature music show Morning Becomes Eclectic.

In addition to his hosting duties Campos, whose show airs weeknights from 10pm to midnight PST on KCRW, will be included on a panel entitled “Finding Your Audience in the Ever-Changing Radio Landscape”, which will discuss how public radio, satellite and other specialty programs are providing new opportunities for Latin artists.

The panel is on Thursday, July 12 at 2pm.

Check out the  2012 LAMC line-up playlist on Spotify to hear music from all the bands performing this year. Registration is currently discounted at only $199 until July 1st.

KCRW Voices Support for Corporation for Public Broadcasting

KCRW Response to Corporation for Public Broadcasting Funding Report
June 20, 2012

On June 20, 2012, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting submitted a special report on alternate funding options to Congress. The CPB was instructed by Congress to investigate whether public radio and television could survive without federal funding.

An independent agency prepared the report and concluded that public radio and television could not survive without federal funding unless it adopted five drastic measures to raise funds. These options include the acceptance of commercial advertising funds and restricting access via subscription. The report also concluded that altering the non-commercial mission would reduce existing funding sources, resulting in a net loss of revenue for public radio and tv stations.

KCRW plays an active role in advocating for federal funding of public broadcasting. An assertive voice on the Hill, General Manager Jennifer Ferro regularly meets with lawmakers to explain how cuts to the CPB would significantly affect the entire public broadcasting system and stations like KCRW that are providing an important service to their community.

Upon Wednesday’s release of the CPB report, KCRW has shared the following statement:

KCRW’s primary responsibility is to serve the audience – not shareholders, nor advertisers. There’s nothing else like that in today’s media space. Federal funding from the CPB accounts for eight percent of the KCRW budget. It is seed money that allows the station to serve its local community with balanced and high quality news, information and cultural programming. KCRW is able to leverage this funding many times over into wide community and individual support. We help to inform our community which is an essential part of any democracy. Public stations also provide critical, real time support in times of natural disasters. KCRW is a pillar in our community, is freely accessible and provides a service that cannot be easily duplicated.

KCRW Names “La Burbuja” Winner Of The Sonic Trace Design Competition

KCRW NAMES “LA BURBUJA” WINNER OF THE SONIC TRACE DESIGN COMPETITION
MAT-TER Design + Build Studio Submits Winning Sound Booth Concept

SANTA MONICA, CA, June 20, 2012KCRW (89.9FM and KCRW.com) is pleased to announce that La Burbuja or “the Bubble” designed by MAT-TER Design + Build Studio, is the winner of the Sonic Trace Design Competition. The contest challenged designers, architects, builders and visionaries to create a portable sound booth which will be used to record stories for a new media project and radio series, Sonic Trace.

A multi-platform story-telling experience, Sonic Trace is produced by KCRW in partnership with the Association of Independents in Radio (AIR). It begins in the heart of Los Angeles and crosses into Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. Part radio, part video, part mapping project, Sonic Trace asks ¿Por qué te vas? ¿Por qué te quedas? ¿Por qué regresas? Why do you go? Why do you stay? And, what makes you return?

“We are honored and excited to win a competition with which I have such an intimate personal connection,” says Hugo Martinez, co-founder of MAT-TER Design + Build Studio. “I come from that background. I am an immigrant. I came from Mexico at a very early age. I do have a history to tell, and it became something very personal that not only expresses what I went through but what my entire family went through.”

One of 30 entries, La Burbuja was submitted by Hugo Martinez and Christin To, co-founders of MAT-TER Design + Build Studio. The sound booth, which will travel all over Los Angeles, resembles a silvery orb that would open up in sections like a chocolate orange to reveal a womb-like recording space inside. The concept was for a “non-place”, in which the interviewee would be suspended in time and space, while bystanders would see themselves reflected in a globe both dematerialized and opaque.

“Eric and I were humbled by the response and the chance many designers took to dream of something more than the basic structure we originally anticipated building,” says Anayansi Diaz-Cortez, co-producer of Sonic Trace. “The Sonic Trace project is deeply personal to us, and its success will remain largely on the stories we are able to gather. La Burbuja encompasses all of the elements we were searching for: portable, practical, creative and most of all, inviting.”

La Burbuja, along with all submitted designs will be on display at the KCRW/DnA booth at this weekend’s Dwell on Design show and can also be viewed at the KCRW DnA Blog. For more information on the Sonic Trace project please visit: www.kcrw.com/sonictrace
