KCRW and the Hammer Museum Announce Line-Up for 2019 Summer Nights

KCRW AND THE HAMMER MUSEUM ANNOUNCE LINE-UP FOR 2019 SUMMER NIGHTS

Featuring Live Music from Pavo Pavo, Wild Belle and the Tracks, and DJ Sets from KCRW’s Anne Litt, Travis Holcombe, Aaron Byrd, Dan Wilcox, José Galván and Scott Dallavo

Free, Outdoors, and All-Ages
Thursdays, July 11, 18 & 25

Los Angeles, CA (June 18, 2019) – KCRW and the Hammer Museum team up once again to present three free nights of live music and DJ sets as part of KCRW’s Summer Nights, Thursdays, July 11, 18, and 25. This year’s series features a stellar line-up of artists: Pavo Pavo, Wild Belle and the Tracks, as well as fierce live sets from KCRW DJs Anne Litt, Travis Holcombe, Aaron Byrd, Dan Wilcox, José Galván and Scott Dallavo.

Pavo Pavo is the recording project of Oliver Hill and Eliza Bagg. They’ve become prolific and vital collaborators at the intersection of classical, experimental, and pop music. Mystery Hour, their second album, is a focused, widescreen development. Channelling the narrative drama of the duo’s changing relationship, it is an uncategorizable record that’s both maximal and compact, a fever dream filled with cinematic imagery and rooted in acute emotion, written as the two were separating after a six-year relationship. Oliver’s pitch-shifted vocals and high melodic synths are a distorted replacement for Eliza’s floating soprano voice, and cascading strings are an intentional soundtrack for romantic melodrama. (July 11)

Since the release of their critically acclaimed debut album, Isles, Wild Belle, led by siblings Elliot and Natalie Bergman, have not stopped. They have toured the world, playing Coachella, Lollapalooza, Corona Capital, and Austin City Limits. They have appeared on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and Conan. They’ve had their music in dozens of television shows and films, and lead singer Natalie recently sang the opening theme for the HBO show The Deuce with Elvis Costello. Their latest album Everybody One of a Kind is a bold, freaked-out sonic collage of all the things that brought fans into their universe. The album bends genres and busts stylistic boundaries. Dub Reggae, Soul, R&B and Pop are all fair game, as the band lovingly explores this fertile ground. (July 18)

Named for the forgotten trolley tracks that run like veins throughout Los Angeles, the young rock band the Tracks boldly play furious, fast music that flies in the face of a genre that seems to have lost its way. Frontman Venancio Bermudez, bassist Felipe Contreras, drummer Jimmy Conde, and guitarist Johnny Santana united over their shared love of rock & roll and are the latest act to contribute to the rich history of Chicano bands, playing music that is directly influenced by their background growing up as the children of undocumented immigrants in East LA. Their music recalls the defiant optimism of working class bands that came before them and their sound reminds us to find the joy in dancing to loud music. (July 25)

All concerts are free, open to the public, all-ages, and held in the Hammer’s lively courtyard. A happy hour with cash bar starts at 6:30 PM, so those that come early can visit the Hammer’s galleries, which will be open until 8:00 PM. Music starts at 7:30 PM.

On view at the Hammer will be Sarah Lucas: Au Naturel, the first American survey of one of the UK’s most influential artists. Over the past 30 years, Sarah Lucas has created a distinctive and provocative body of work that subverts traditional notions of gender, sexuality, and identity. Organized by the New Museum, Sarah Lucas: Au Naturel brings together more than 130 works in photography, collage, sculpture, and video to reveal the breadth and ingenuity of her practice.

James Blake Performs “I’ll Come Too” at the First-Ever Live Session from KCRW’s Brand-New Annenberg Performance Studio

Santa Monica, CA (May 21, 2019) – Today, in celebration of the first-ever live session at KCRW’s brand-new Annenberg Performance Studio, James Blake performed a seven-song live set, and spoke with KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley, on the station’s tastemaker music program, Morning Becomes Eclectic. Joined by bandmates Rob McAndrews and Ben Assiter, Blake’s live performance featured songs from his latest album, Assume Form, including the title track, “Barefoot In The Park,” “I’ll Come Too,” and “Don’t Miss It.” Blake also treated listeners and a live in-studio audience to his hit song “Retrograde,” as well as an encore of a stunning rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You.”

Blake’s gorgeous live version of “I’ll Come Too” can be seen and heard here:

The critically acclaimed Assume Form features collaborations with Travis Scott, Metro Boomin, André 3000, Moses Sumney, and Rosalía. Blake, a founding member of the 1-800 Dinosaur label collective, was first introduced to the world with his self-titled debut in 2010. In 2013, he released his follow up, Overgrown, which earned him a Best New Artist Grammy nomination. His 2016 album The Colour in Anything was a bracing continuation of his work that bent the borders between electronic music, R&B, and U.K. soul. Throughout his career, Blake has established himself as both a highly respected solo artist and one of the music industry’s most influential collaborators, working alongside everyone from Frank Ocean, Travis Scott, Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Jay Z, Oneohtrix Point Never, Mount Kimbie among others.

Los Angeles’ premier public radio station, KCRW, recently moved into its new headquarters, the KCRW Media Center on Santa Monica College’s CMD Campus. The 34,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility acts as both a media hub and a cultural one, servicing the greater Los Angeles community, and beyond.

Morning Becomes Eclectic, hosted by KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley, is the station’s signature daily music program (9:00 a.m. – Noon) featuring new releases from emerging and established artists, underappreciated gems, live performances and interviews.

KCRW’s Lost Notes, Season Two, Episode One – Now Available

KCRW’s Lost Notes, Season Two, Episode One, “Teenage Offenders” Now Available

Hosted by Music Journalist and Author Jessica Hopper

“People make mistakes on their way to learning the right thing.” – Clif “Hanger” Croce of The Freeze

Santa Monica, CA (April 25, 2019) – The first episode of the 2nd season of KCRW’s acclaimed music documentary podcast Lost Notes, “Teenage Offenders,” is now available. Hosted by celebrated music journalist and author Jessica Hopper, “Teenage Offenders” tells the story of two members of the early American punk band The Freeze, now forty years later, reflecting on their lyrics and their legacy in the #MeToo era.

Rob Rosenthal and his buddy Clif Croce were in high school when they founded The Freeze, a Boston punk band, in 1978. One of the definitive compilations of music from Boston’s 80s hardcore punk scene was named after a Freeze song: “This is Boston, Not L.A.” The band opened for the likes of Black Flag, Fear, the U.K. Subs, and toured across the U.S. and Europe. The Freeze remains Cape Cod’s longest running punk band. Like most punk bands from this era, they sang about what they were against: religion, jocks, and conformity. But they were bratty, too, and aimed to offend. Now, forty years later, Rob and Clif examine their own feelings on what they wrote decades ago.

Season two of Lost Notes examines untold stories from music history, and explores the idea of legacy. Episode two will be released Thursday, May 2, and features author and poet Hanif Abdurraqib exploring Cat Power’s storied album The Greatest.  Lost Notes is available for free on Apple Podcasts, KCRW’s website and all other major podcast platforms.

KCRW Announces Details of Lost Notes, Season Two

KCRW Announces Details of Lost Notes, Season Two

Acclaimed Podcast Welcomes Music Journalist and Author Jessica Hopper as Host and Executive Producer

“Each episode of Lost Notes is an in-depth view of a story you had no idea was so essential until you start listening.” – Complex

Santa Monica, CA (April 3, 2019) – KCRW is pleased to announce details of the second season of the acclaimed podcast Lost Notes – a series of music documentaries – launching on April 25, 2019. For season two, Lost Notes welcomes celebrated music journalist and author Jessica Hopper as host and executive producer.

Lost Notes examines untold stories from music history, and, this season, explores the idea of legacy. What can a song inspire in its listeners or its creators, years or even decades later? What happens when a previous generation’s art is held to a younger generation’s moral standard? Who is obscured by the shadow of an artist’s greatness?

“With this season of Lost Notes our aim was to deepen some of the conversations around legacy,” says Hopper. “We asked for story ideas from folks who had previously contributed to Lost Notes, as well as writers who I had worked with before, with no particular prompt for what sorts of stories we wanted. Many of them came back to us with stories that were retrospective, and worked to reconcile music’s present and its past. This season approaches questions of artistic legacy with openness and real curiosity, and offers up stories that are new and nuanced. These episodes get into whose work, and whose story is considered worth remembering and why. Every episode gives context around the cultural forces that shaped, and in some cases, complicated an artist’s career. I’m someone who is fundamentally interested in the stories of artists who have been relegated to the footnotes, so working on this season of Lost Notes has been hugely satisfying.”

Lost Notes, season two episodes:

  • Fanny were the first all-female rock band signed to a major label; they ruled the Sunset Strip in the 1970s, and they were supposed to be the next big thing. They’ll explain what it felt like to be so ahead of their time, then, and how they feel about being recognized for it now.

  • John Fahey’s guitar playing influenced the sound of the American underground for generations. But how does that legacy change when his story is told by three of the women who knew him best?

  • Author and poet Hanif Abdurraqib explores Cat Power’s storied album The Greatest.

  • Nermin Niazi and Feisal Mosleh, teenage siblings in London, made Disco Se Aagay, a fusion of Pakistani folk-pop and British new wave, in the early 80s. Arshia Fatima Haq tracks down their lost masterpiece.

  • A profile of Suzanne Ciani, who balanced her pathbreaking commercial work scoring Coke ads in the seventies with her work as a pioneering avant garde synth composer.

  • The Freeze were an early American punk band. Now, forty years later, two members attempt to reckon with the lyrics they wrote as teenagers.

  • In the decades since his death, jazz pianist Billy Tipton has been celebrated as a trans pioneer. Allyson McCabe looks at Tipton’s mysterious life with artists he’s influenced, to find the ways his story resists any simple telling.

  • Jessica Hopper looks at how gun violence has changed the concert going experience, but why so few people in music are willing to talk about it.

The first episode of Lost Notes will be released April 25, 2019. Additional episodes drop every Thursday. The podcast is available for free on Apple Podcasts, KCRW’s website and all other major podcast platforms.

A sneak peek of what’s to come on Lost Notes, season two, can be heard here.

Episodes from Lost Notes’ first season were listed among the best podcast episodes of 2018 by Audible Feast, The Bello Collective, and Indiewire, praising its “outside looks at some of the best music-related tales of decades past.”

KCRW DJs on the station’s 2019 SXSW night showcase artists:

Ambar Lucid
New Jersey’s Ambar Lucid is hailed for her bedroom pop sounds, and incorporating bilingual lyrics into her songs. Without having released a proper LP or EP, the 18 year-old is quickly developing a fan base with her lo fi videos and organic songs that explore love and coming of age. I’m excited to have her on board during our KCRW showcase.
— Anthony Valadez

Westerman
Based in London, Westerman (an artist who forgoes a first name) has taken us at KCRW quite by surprise over the last year. Having grown up in a house with Neil Young and Nick Drake playing on the stereo, his early work on acoustic guitar has the featherlike feel of those artists. (Westerman also cites Kings of Leon as a major influence.)  He didn’t pick up the guitar until he was sixteen, and prior to that he spent his time studying and performing choral music. Soon, he teamed up with producer, Bullion (who also eschews a first name), and that’s where the synths came creeping into his work. All of this makes for a gorgeous, airy and almost classical-sounding kind of music that continues to captivate us. Westerman is certainly a contender for Best New Artist of the year.
— Anne Litt

J.S. Ondara
Growing up in Nairobi, Kenya, J.S. Ondara first came across the music of Bob Dylan through the Guns and Roses cover of “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.” At first he thought it was a G’n’R original, but once he realized who wrote the song, he became obsessed. While still in his teens, he pledged to move to Minneapolis to retrace the steps of his hero, a move that gave him great inspiration. His spellbinding voice and his unique take on American folk music endeared him to the local music scene, and led to heavy airplay on The Current, the famed new music outlet on Minnesota Public Radio.
— Chris Douridas

Broken Social Scene
Among the busy currents of new bands making the trek to Austin, KCRW is thrilled to present Indie Rock veterans Broken Social Scene at our official SXSW showcase this year. The dynamic Canadian collective has been a beacon for quality over the last two decades, and their latest EP Let’s Try The After Vol. 1 only adds to their stellar repertoire. The nine-piece band will surely have Elysium nightclub heaving on Tuesday night, for one of the music festivals’ first not-to-be missed engagements.
— Jason Bentley

Cautious Clay
In 2018, Cautious Clay released an identity-searching and incredibly soulful EP Blood Type. It was the culmination of finally deciding to quit his day job and concentrate full-time on making music. Cautious, aka, Joshua Karpeh, had previously tasted an ephemeral spotlight in 2015 as his remix of Billie Eilish’s “Ocean Eyes,” had been handpicked by the band to be included in their remix package. But the success of his self-released EP (which has 20 million plus streams) has now fixed a giant spotlight on the Cleveland-born, via Brooklyn musician. Cautious Clay is one of the most sought after, up & coming DIY acts, and his downbeat, sultry sounds will be the perfect close to another fantastically curated KCRW showcase at SXSW!
— José Galván

Pavo Pavo
It’s evident that Pavo Pavo, the recording project of Oliver Hill and Eliza Bagg, spend a good amount of time mixing the sonic brilliance on their latest album, Mystery Tour, released just last month. The duo draw inspiration from the challenges of relationships (Oliver and Eliza separated after being together for six years) and somehow manage to convey emotion in every kick, snare and guitar lick.
— Antony Valadez

Tamino
Born and raised in Antwerp, Tamino captivates with a three octave range. Named for the hero in Mozart’s The Magic Flute who is given a flute that can turn sorrow into joy, he actually comes from Egyptian entertainment royalty (his grandfather was Moharam Fouad, an actor and singer during the Golden Age of Egyptian cinema). One day while sorting through family heirlooms at his grandmother’s house, he came across his grandfather’s Resonator guitar. Inspiration hit immediately and within a month he was writing songs on the instrument. SXSW 2019 will be the first opportunity to catch this rising star perform live in North America.
— Chris Douridas

Yola
Yola’s debut album, Walk Through Fire, produced by Dan Auerbach, is a genre-bending combination of country and soul from one of the most powerful emerging British voices in music today. After spending years backing up others, working on tracks from Katy Perry to Massive Attack, she finally came to the attention of Auerbach (The Black Keys) after he saw a video of her performing in Nashville, which has now become a second home to her. Coverage from NPR, Rolling Stone Country, the Wall Street Journal, Paste, and Stereogum all praise Yola, comparing her to a diverse range of artists from the Staples Singers to Dolly Parton. Check out her live prowess at SXSW before she hits the Hollywood Bowl stage this summer as part of KCRW’s World Festival.

Jason Bentley, host

Since making their debut in 2004, Chromeo have turned festivals around the world into gigantic outdoor dance parties. Taking cues from Prince and Daft Punk, the Montreal duo have forged a brand of electro-funk that’s equal parts vintage groove and futurist fantasy. Toro y Moi’s Chaz Bear has followed his own omnivorous taste throughout a fascinating career that encompasses collagist sampling, laid-back funk, smooth rock, and existential R&B, all of it set to a club-ready dance beat. Chicago-born rapper and poet Noname, known for her thought-provoking message and freestyle skills, garnered national notoriety from her collaboration with Chance the Rapper, and her star has been rising ever since. She’s released two universally acclaimed records which led Rolling Stone to declare her as “one of the best rappers alive.” Brooklyn-born Ian Isiah (aka Big Shugga) was raised on gospel music, and has infused his heart and soul into a new brand of modern R&B and radio rap. The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation Awards KCRW $200,000 One-Year General Operating Grant

KCRW Announces $200,000 One-Year General Operating Grant from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation

SANTA MONICA, CA (12/17/18)—The Westlake Village-based Conrad N. Hilton Foundation awarded Southern California public radio station, KCRW, a $200,000 one-year general operating grant to help KCRW continue producing hundreds of hours of original content and programming per week. The general operating grant will further KCRW’s mission to be a primary news and cultural resource to educate, inform and inspire our community throughout California and across the globe.

As one of public media’s most innovative leaders, KCRW produces a diverse selection of programming, including public service journalism, in-studio music performances, and in-depth interviews with newsmakers and cultural catalysts.

Since its inception, news has been a staple of KCRW’s programming through both local and nationally-focused shows. Daily news and cultural programs such as Press Play hosted by Madeleine Brand, have kept Angelenos in-the-know about their city, while projects such as Left, Right, and Center have provided a space for voices from across the political spectrum to discuss the most pressing national issues of the day.

With the generous support of the Hilton Foundation, KCRW can continue creating trendsetting programming that unites curious minds and has a national impact through syndication on 175 public media outlets around the country and beyond.

“We are grateful to the Hilton Foundation for this generous support of KCRW’s mission to educate, inform and inspire our community. By telling the stories of the news events, culture and music of Southern California, KCRW is able to represent the world to Los Angeles and Los Angeles to the world,” says Jennifer Ferro, KCRW President.

This most recent grant follows a three-year, $1,000,000 multi-media deep dive into issues to tell the stories of the most vulnerable populations throughout Los Angeles from 2015 through the first half of 2018. The grant resulted in three in-depth series (Below the Ten, KCRW Investigates, and There Goes the Neighborhood), partnerships with the United Way HomeWalk walk to end homelessness, and WNYC, among others.

About the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation
The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation was created in 1944 by international business pioneer Conrad N. Hilton, who founded Hilton Hotels and left his fortune to help the world’s disadvantaged and vulnerable people. The Foundation currently conducts strategic initiatives in six priority areas: providing safe water, ending chronic homelessness, preventing substance use, helping young children affected by HIV and AIDS, supporting transition age youth in foster care, and extending Conrad Hilton’s support for the work of Catholic Sisters. In addition, following selection by an independent international jury, the Foundation annually awards the $2 million Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize to a nonprofit organization doing extraordinary work to reduce human suffering. In 2018, the Hilton Humanitarian Prize was awarded to SHOFCO (Shining Hope for Communities), a grassroots organization based in Nairobi, Kenya that catalyzes large-scale transformation in urban slums by providing critical services for all, community advocacy platforms, and education and leadership development for women and girls. From its inception, the Foundation has awarded more than $1.6 billion in grants, distributing $114.9 million in the U.S. and around the world in 2017. The Foundation’s current assets are approximately $2.8 billion. For more information, please visit www.hiltonfoundation.org.
