More about the artists:

Santigold:

In the decade since her classic eponymous debut, Santi has revealed herself to be the most eclectic artist of her generation with a broad influence. She has collaborated with Jay Z, Kanye West, The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Karen O & Nick Zinner, Beastie Boys, David Byrne, Amadou & Mariam, Q Tip, MIA, Mark Ronson, Pharrell, Julian Casablancas, Lykke Li, Basement Jaxx, Matt & Kim, Major Lazer, Asap Rocky, Diplo, Lil Yachty, Devo, and The Lonely Island. Her songs have been sampled by Drake & Lil Wayne and Future among others. She’s written for Gza of Wu-Tang Clan, Lily Allen, and Christina Aguilera. Santi has been handpicked for tours by Bjork, Kanye West, Jay Z, Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Beastie Boys. She’s a singular artist beloved by her peers across genres. On July 27th through Downtown Records, Santigold released I Don’t Want: The Gold Fire Sessions – a summer-inspired spontaneous mixtape-style project recorded with Mixpak Records producer Dre Skull.

White Denim:

In his 1942 essay The Myth of Sisyphus, Camus wrote that “All great deeds and all great thoughts have a ridiculous beginning. Great works are often born on a street corner or in a restaurant’s revolving door.” 15 years later Richard Wayne Penniman wrote “Wop bop a loo bop a wop bam boom”, an undeniably powerful vocalization that on any given Wednesday in any given situation, civilized or otherwise, is still fully capable of setting somebody’s stuff aflame. Over ten years and seven long players into their career, White Denim are still in the relentless pursuit of a thread- in other words, a wick. The Austin, Texas band have carefully and continuously studied the greatest records ever made, but they write songs just dumb enough to drink, dance, and fight to. Theirs is a music that aims for the whole body, while equally satisfying the mind. While it has morphed, expanded, and even burst apart, White Denim’s sincere and human drive and ability to spark true exhilaration have been unerring constants of the band’s 10-year existence.

Wajatta:

Wajatta – the new group formed by beat-boxer/comedian/musician Reggie Watts and electronic music artist/DJ/producer John Tejada recently released its debut album, Casual High Technology. Presented as a cosmic collection of funk-infused techno, Casual High Technology is the culmination of decades’ worth of Watts and Tejada’s favorite electronic music shaped to fit a new dance sensibility. Wajatta (pronounced wa-Ha-ta), as the name suggests, is a mash-up of the artist’s last names. Having grown up with similar musical influences, Austrian-born Tejada and German-born Watts draw from their love of urban, electronic music. Exploring the intersection between influences and innovation, the two describe Wajatta’s music as “electronic dance music with its roots in Detroit techno, Chicago house, ’70s funk and New York hip hop.” Tejada’s deep, melodic production makes the perfect backing for Watt’s wide vocal range and live looping skills.

DāM-FunK:

Damon “Dām-Funk” Riddick grew up in the Los Angeles city/suburb of Pasadena. A ’70s baby, he came of age in the era of the Uncle Jamm’s Army parties, of electro-pharaoh Egyptian Lover, of Prince’s purple reign. His parents nurtured his musical talents as a child and by his teens, he mastered the drums, then the drum machine. A chance encounter led to an apprenticeship under funk songwriter/producer Leon Sylvers III (SOLAR Records) and by the mid-90s G-Funk era in hip-hop, Dām found his musical skills in high demand by rappers such as Mack 10 and MC Eiht. In 2006, Dām-Funk and a few friends launched the popular Funkmosphere party in L.A., bringing the boogie back. It’s around then that Dām drew the attention of Stones Throw. Dām’s partnership with the label has seen the release of his debut Toeachizown (2009) and Invite the Light (2015), as well as an anthology of early productions, Adolescent Funk (2010), to Higher (2013) with Steve Arrington and 7 Days of Funk (2013) with Snoop Dogg.

Cherry Glazerr:

Clem, a 19 year old teen Queen with a headstrong resolve like her hero Patti Smith dreamed up Cherry Glazerr in her LA bedroom. Bolstering Clem’s vision is the loud-in every-way-possible drummer Tabor Allen and the level-headed but bad-ass, multi-instrumentalist Sasami Ashworth who plays synths and notably French Horn (Clem is still scheming on how to incorporate that into Cherry Glazerr’s sound). The band’s newfound self-discipline and motivation has evolved Cherry Glazerr into a wildly complex, hugely guitar heavy, and unapologetically loud machine. When it comes to sweating the major shit, Cherry Glazerr live like they want to see others live. They don’t want to preach certain politics, they’d rather hold court for an open discourse. The subject of equality among the sexes, however, holds a special, unavoidable place for Clem, torchbearer for feminism in its raddest forms.

Shannon Shaw:

Shannon Shaw, the captivating vocalist, bassist, and founder of Shannon & the Clams, released her first solo album, Shannon In Nashville in June, 2018. A nod to Dusty Springfield’s 1969 classic Dusty In Memphis, Shaw made her own pilgrimage down South to collaborate with The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and a congregation of revered old-school session musicians. Evoking the tear-jerking intonations of Brenda Lee and Patsy Cline, Shaw’s mastery of the instrument she was born to use leaves no doubt that she belongs squarely on the throne of whatever she cares to belt out. The record’s lush orchestration seamlessly melds the Nashville Sound with the Motown Sound—both known for crossing a type of roots music over into pop—and provides the wings for Shaw’s naturally anguished, torchy voice to soar. Shaw truly arrives in Nashville sounding like a woman who has learned to embrace who she is and where she came from.

Brothers Griiin:

You may recognize the Brothers Griiin as the fearless drumming duo behind The Flaming Lips, but after the show these international DJ destroyers bring the party to the people. Matt Duckworth (Stardeath and White Dwarfs) and Nicholas Ley (Colourmusic) got the call to join the Flaming Lips in early 2014. The plan was to alternate drumming duties for the Lips in between their other tours at first, but after a few shows with both drummers it was decided that the Lips would only play with the “Brothers.” When you catch the Brothers Griiin live, they have no genre or playlist, they just spin what the party needs, all night long. Mixing funk, hip hop, pop, indie and dance, these gladiators of style and taste keep the drinks full and the dance floor packed.  Go party with them, you’re all invited. It will be loud. It will be wild. It will be Griiin.

More about the Artists:

When two of hip-hop’s most accomplished composers get together to make an album, you know the results are going to be special. Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest) & Adrian Younge began their work together in 2013 on the critically acclaimed album There Is Only Now. Their partnership cemented on the score work for Marvel’s Luke Cage. The duo’s long awaited album as The Midnight Hour is carefully constructed and masterful, and showcases their songwriting ability like never before. The 20-track double album, was recently released June 8, on Linear Labs, and distributed digitally by INgrooves with vinyl distributed by Traffic Entertainment. The lead track and first single “Questions” features CeeLo Green and perfectly captures the album’s underlying roots in hip-hop’s origins.

Flipping through the pages of The Last Whole Earth Catalogue, a resource that was, in 1971, basically the internet before the internet, Jim James stumbled upon a distorted photo of “The Illuminated Man” by Duane Michals. Immediately moved by the photo, he asked for permission to use the image as the album cover of his third solo album Uniform Distortion. The first request to Michals was rejected. In hopes of changing his mind, James wrote a letter to Michals, personally, and was ultimately allowed to use the image. In the letter James wrote “the name of my new record is ‘UNIFORM DISTORTION’ because i feel like there is this blanket distortion on society/media and the way we gather our ‘news’ and important information…and more and more of us are feeling lost and looking for new ways out of this distortion and back to the truth…and finding hope in places like the desert where i write this email to you now…finding hope in the land and in the water and in old books offering new ideas and most importantly in each other and love.”

In describing Henry Rollins, the tendency is to try to squeeze as many labels as possible into a single sentence. “Rollins is many things,” says The Washington Post, “diatribist, confessor, provocateur, humorist, even motivational speaker…his is an enthusiastic and engaging chatter.” Entertainment Weekly’s list includes “Punk Rock icon. Spoken word poet. Actor. Author. DJ. Is there anything this guy can’t do?” TV Guide has more concisely called him a “Renaissance Man” but if Henry Rollins could be reduced to a single word, that word would undoubtedly be “workaholic.” When he’s not traveling, Rollins prefers a to keep a relentless schedule full of work, with gigs as an actor, author, DJ, voice-over artist and TV show host to name a few of the roles that keep his schedule full. Rollins has toured the world as a spoken word artist, as frontman for both Rollins Band and Black Flag and as a solitary traveler with insatiable curiosity, favoring road-less-traveled locales in places such as Nepal, Sri Lanka, Siberia, North Korea, South Sudan and Iran.

Dirty Projectors Exclusive Live Version of Unreleased Song “I Found It In U” from KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic

Additional Highlights to Air on Thursday, July 12, at 11:15 am PDT

In celebration of the new album, Lamp Lit Prose, Dirty Projectors performed live for KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic. Today, they share “I Found It In U” an exclusive, previously-unreleased song, from that session.

On Thursday, July 12, the day before the album is released, KCRW will air additional highlights on Morning Becomes Eclectic, at 11:15 am PDT.

Dirty Projectors’ Lamp Lit Prose, out this Friday, July 13, on Domino, was produced by Dave Longstreth at his studio Ivo Shandor in Los Angeles. The new album features guest appearances from SYD, EMPRESS OF, AMBER MARK, HAIM, ROSTAM, ROBIN PECKNOLD, and DEAR NORA, as well as longtime DPs’ rhythm section Nat Baldwin and Mike Johnson. Lamp Lit Prose arrives just over a year after 2017’s self-titled Dirty Projectors. With Lamp Lit Prose Longstreth’s band returns with an album that is the yang to the yin of the 2017 effort. The songs signal a page turned for Longstreth: hope instead of heartbreak, a restorative balance. Guitars have returned to the Dirty Projectors’ world, intricate vocal harmony too. Lamp Lit Prose is a recommitment to the sounds and ideals of Dirty Projectors, embracing the band’s trademarks while pushing forward the sonic envelope. On Saturday, June 16, One Colorado continues with shey baba. The Los Angeles-born singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, spent two years in relative isolation patiently making what would become his stunning debut album, Requiem. With an incredible body of work now complete, shey baba is ready to share something very special. KCRW DJ Chris Douridas opens and closes the evening.

One Colorado Old Pasadena is a collection of 17 historic buildings housing a curated mix of nationally acclaimed retailers and designers, unique local merchants, inventive restaurants, and a boutique cinema. It’s the retail centerpiece and favorite casual gathering place for the Pasadena community, with public events hosted year-round in its central courtyard.

May on MBE – Beach House, Sofi Tukker, Courtney Barnett, Laura Veirs, and EELS

May’s live performances
on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic

Beach House, Sofi Tukker, Courtney Barnett,
Laura Veirs, and EELS

May’s live performances on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic kick-off with Beach House performing live, tomorrow, Tuesday, May 15. Throughout the month, the station’s flagship music program welcomes the breadth of artists you would expect from the SoCal tastemaker including Sofi Tukker (10am), Courtney Barnett, and Laura Veirs. May on MBE also offers the first opportunity to see songs from EELS new record The Deconstruction performed live.

All performances can be heard on-air, or streamed live at kcrw.com in the 11:00 AM PDT hour unless otherwise noted.

Tuesday, May 15 – Beach House
Baltimore-based band Beach House continues to create dark and dreamy pop music that is absolutely captivating. Their new album 7 (the band’s seventh studio album) is earning them some of the best reviews of their decade-plus career.

Wednesday, May 16 – Sofi Tukker – Airs at 10:00 a.m.
KCRW were among the very first to champion Sofi Tukker, who have quickly found an impassioned following for their infectious dance pop sound. They just released their debut full length Treehouse which includes “Baby I’m a Queen,” a song that they performed live on MBE back in 2016. They return to the studio for a special 4-song set.

Friday, May 18 – Courtney Barnett
Courtney Barnett has experienced a quick rise to indie rock fame thanks to whip-smart lyricism and a stream-of-conscious singing style that puts the focus on her wry observations about everyday life. On the day she releases her new album, Tell Me How You Really Feel, KCRW will air highlights from a session recorded at Apogee Studio in front of a live audience.

Wednesday, May 23 – Laura Veirs
On her 10th solo album, The Lookout, prolific songwriter Laura Veirs demonstrates the depth of her musical skill. There is something warm and soothing about her voice that makes lyrics about our unsteady world go down easy. The last time Veirs visited the KCRW studio, it was as part of the singer-songwriter super group case/lang/veirs (with kd lang and Neko Case).

Friday, May 25 – EELS
EELS visit KCRW studios for the first full band live performance of songs from the new album The Deconstruction. The session takes place just days before the launch of a world tour, so it’s the first place for fans to see and hear the new songs performed live.

Morning Becomes Eclectic, hosted by KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley, is the station’s signature daily music program (9:00 AM – Noon) featuring new releases from emerging and established artists, underappreciated gems, live performances and interviews.

Today, April 2, in the 11:00 AM PDT Hour

Session to be Streamed Worldwide on KCRW.com and Facebook Live

April on KCRW’s flagship music program Morning Becomes Eclectic kicks off today, and welcomes the breadth of artists you would expect from the SoCal tastemaking station. All performances can be heard on-air, or streamed live at kcrw.com at 11:15 AM PDT.

Monday, April 2 – The Voidz
Led by The Stroke’s singer Julian Casablancas, The Voidz make their live radio debut in support of their new album Virtue, released today on RCA Records. Featuring a swirl of different styles ranging from prog-rock to groovy pop recorded in Los Angeles, Virtue is the band’s first work in nearly four years.

Tuesday, April 3 – Yellow Days
The young UK artist Yellow Days, aka George Van Den Broek performs live in studio. He released his debut full length Is Everything Ok in Your World to critical acclaim, and KCRW has been watching the inventive artist’s star rise quickly.

Wednesday, April 4 – The Breeders
The Breeders drop by the studio to perform a mix of new songs and fan favorites. They reunited in 2013 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Last Splash, one of the most influential albums of the ‘90s. Inspired by those shows, the band returned to the studio for a new album All Nerve, picking up right where they left off.

Tuesday, April 10 – Wajatta
Tune in to the worldwide live radio debut of Wajatta, the brainchild of beat-boxer, comedian, and musician Reggie Watts, and electronic music artist, DJ, and producer John Tejada. Their first single “Runnin'” has been lighting up the KCRW airwaves.

Thursday, April 12 – Moby
A live performance and interview featuring Moby will air in support of his 15th studio album Everything was Beautiful, and Nothing Hurt. The session was taped at the prestigious Apogee Studios, owned and operated by famed engineer Bob Clearmountain.

Monday, April 16 – Tom Misch
Tom Misch was voted “Best New Artist” by KCRW’s DJs last year, and his debut album comes out April 6. All of the singles so far have been spectacular, and Misch visits the studio to share tracks from the album and more.

Wednesday, April 18 – Greta Van Fleet
The Michigan quartet has seen a quick rise to fame for their classic rock sound. They’ll be bringing their fiery show to Coachella, then hit the KCRW studio for a blistering live set.

Friday, April 20 – Charlotte Day Wilson
Toronto-based singer Charlotte Day Wilson shined when she joined BadBadNotGood to sing guest vocals during their MBE live set last year. She just released her second EP, Stone Woman, and her performance is sure to be stunning.

Monday, April 23 – Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever
The KCRW team happened upon these Aussie rockers at SXSW last year and became instant fans. Last year’s EP French Press for Sub Pop landed on many “best of 2017” lists, and they’ll be performing a preview of tracks from their forthcoming album.

Thursday, April 26 – Jade Bird
Jade Bird was one of the most talked about artists of SXSW 2018, and lived up to the hype at KCRW’s official SXSW showcase. Her incredible energy, wit and wisdom are far beyond her 20 young years.

Monday, April 30 – Django Django
UK art rock band Django Django take a turn towards pop on their 3rd album, Marble Skies. It’s their most confident release to date, and KCRW is excited to have them back in the studio.

Morning Becomes Eclectic, hosted by KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley, is the station’s signature daily music program (9:00 AM – Noon) featuring new releases from emerging and established artists, underappreciated gems, live performances and interviews.
