Celebrity Chef Emeril Lagasse Dishes on His Favorite Songs for a Special Thanksgiving Episode of KCRW’s Guest DJ Project

Santa Monica, CA (November 23, 2016) – Emeril Lagasse, one of the most recognizable chefs in the world, joins host Eric J. Lawrence for the current installment of KCRW’s Guest DJ Project. Lagasse, a regional James Beard Award winner who owns 13 restaurants, and is well known for his Food Network shows Emeril Live and Essence of Emeril, serves up some of his favorite tunes just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.

For Lagasse’s Guest DJ set, he highlights a New Orleans’ legend, expresses the importance of music in his everyday life and work, and shares some songs that simply make him happy. He also reveals a personal connection to one of Billy Joel’s biggest hits, “Piano Man.” “The interesting story is that there’s a character in one of the lyrics of the song [now John at the bar is a friend of mine]… and John used to work for me at Commander’s Palace, way before he was with Billy Joel. But what’s amazing about the song is that it’s, for me, it’s very deep, it’s very personal, there’s a lot in there that says a lot about people and places, and just things going on in life then and things that are going on in life now.”

Emeril Lagasse currently stars in the globetrotting Amazon series “Eat the World.”

Los Angeles Lakers’ Point Guard D’Angelo Russell Shares His Game Day Anthem on KCRW’s Guest DJ Project

Santa Monica, CA (November 2, 2016) – Los Angeles Lakers’ point guard D’Angelo Russell is one of the most promising players in the current lineup. KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley visited the Lakers’ practice facility to shine a light on some of Russell’s favorite songs for the current installment of KCRW’s Guest DJ Project. His all hip-hop playlist shows many sides of the 20-year-old Kentucky native.

During the taping, Russell reveals his game day anthem, how it feels to be a celebrity in Los Angeles, his penchant for discovering new music, and his thoughts on the upcoming season which just launched on October 26. “I think pre-season was great,” Russell comments. “As a team, we took a lot of steps forward. Everything was new for us; you know, new players, new coaching staff. It was just a whole whirlwind as far as those aspects, but I feel that we are on the right track.”

Russell is off to a great start. In the Lakers’ season opener, he scored 20 points in a 120–114 win over the Houston Rockets.

Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam Make Rare Radio Appearance with Live Session on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic

Santa Monica, CA (October 25, 2016) – Hamilton Leithauser (The Walkmen) and Rostam Batmanglij (Vampire Weekend) joined forces for I Had A Dream That You Were Mine. Called “beautiful and mysterious” by the Los Angeles Times, the debut from the duo has been met with overwhelming critical acclaim. Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam will visit the KCRW studio for a rare live radio session on Morning Becomes Eclectic – Wednesday, October 26, at 11:00 AM PDT – performing tracks from their recently released collaboration.

During the past several weeks some incredible musical moments have been captured on Morning Becomes Eclectic. Below are just a few of the highlights:

  • Dawes – “We’re All Gonna Die” is the most ambitious album to date from the LA-based indie folk rockers. They returned to the KCRW studios for a live session that closed with a cover of Warren Zevon’s “Desperados Under the Eaves” which Taylor Goldsmith dubbed, “the king of all L.A. songs.”  Listen/Watch
  • The Avett Brothers – “True Sadness” is the group’s highest debuting album ever, and their most autobiographical. They experimented with new sounds under the guidance of producer Rick Rubin. Highlights from their live session at Apogee Studio include the very first live rendition of “Murder in the City” as a full band.  Listen/Watch
  • Wico –  In the midst of three sold out shows in L.A., Wilco set aside an afternoon to record a special live session for KCRW at The Theatre at Ace Hotel. They played selections from their latest album “Schmilco,” as well as old favorites, and set aside some time for Jeff Tweedy to chat with KCRW’s Chris Douridas.  Listen/Watch
  • Jamie Lidell – The latest album from Jamie Lidell is a meditation on love and family, inspired by the birth of his first child. His personal stories are told through smooth psychedelic soul. KCRW welcomed him and a top notch group of musicians for a live session recorded at the Village studio. Listen/Watch
  • Norah Jones –  “Day Breaks,” Norah Jones’ new album, is being hailed as a “kindred spirit” to the singer’s breakout debut, “Come Away With Me.” The nine-time Grammy winner recorded a live session at Apogee Studio,which included a reworked version of the smash hit, “Don’t Know Why.”  Listen/Watch
  • Ludovico Einaudi – Italian pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi performed solo on a floating platform in the middle of the Arctic Ocean earlier this year. He brought a full band to the KCRW studio to share his breathtaking compositions.  Listen/Watch
  • Lush – When acclaimed UK indie band Lush announced their reunion last year, KCRW snagged them for their first live U.S. radio performance in 20 years!  Listen/Watch

Actor/Writer/Director Bruce Campbell Finally Gets Asked About Music on KCRW’s Guest DJ Project

Santa Monica, CA (October 19, 2016) – Actor, writer and producer Bruce Campbell discusses songs that have inspired him in the latest installment of KCRW’s Guest DJ Project. Campbell talks to Eric J. Lawrence about a few of his favorite tracks, stating “I’m very happy to be here, because no one asks me about music, EVER!”

During the taping, Campbell professes his love of Motown, admiration of good lyrics, what not to listen to if you’re going through a break-up, and what motivated the cast and crew on the set of Burn Notice.

In addition to TV shows such as Xena: Warrior Princess and Burn Notice, and films like the critically acclaimed Bubba Ho-Tep, Campbell is the star of the cult horror comedy franchise the Evil Dead — and now the Ash vs Evil Dead TV series on Starz, where he reprises his role as the reluctant demon fighter.

Actor/Comedian Bill Hader Discusses Comedic Inspiration of Frank Zappa in First Live Taping of KCRW’s Guest DJ Project

Santa Monica, CA (October 12, 2016) – Actor/comedian Bill Hader is featured in the first-ever live taping of KCRW’s Guest DJ Project, recorded as part of LA Podcast Fest. Hader talks to KCRW DJ Anne Litt about his father’s influence on improving his musical taste, the comedic inspiration of Frank Zappa, getting over stage fright with the help of XTC, the humor in De La Soul’s particular brand of hip hop, and more.

During the taping, Hader’s comedic prowess is in full force throughout, opening the session with, “This is great. You guys are going to have to sit and watch me listen to a song. At eleven o’clock at night. In a weird ass hotel.”

Hader was a standout during his eight seasons on Saturday Night Live and starred in Amy Schumer’s breakout comedy Trainwreck. The second season of his parody series Documentary Now! is airing now on IFC.

 KCRW and the Annenberg Foundation are pleased to announce the final lineup for the 2016 Sound in Focus series – three, free, all-ages concerts held at Century Park in Century City, home of the Annenberg Space for Photography.

On Saturday, July 16 Senegalese singer/guitarist Baaba Maal performs a headlining set with L.A. duo Classixx in a live band performance, and New York’s free-form, jamming quartet Brazilian Girls opening. To start things off, KCRW’s Aaron Byrd spins a DJ set.

Previously announced artists are Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Imarhan, and KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley on July 9th and Nas, Wild Belle, and KCRW DJ Garth Trinidad on July 23rd.
Admission to the Sound in Focus series is free; however, RSVP is required for entry but does not guarantee admission, which will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Registered guests must collect wristbands upon arrival at check-in to gain access to the concerts. Advance registration is available at KCRW.com/soundinfocus and is required for every show.

Baaba Maal’s work is a modern twist on the West African tradition of the griot: the storytelling troubadour. Born into a large family of fishermen in the Fouta town of Podor in 1953, Baaba Maal studied music in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, and Paris, and embarked on a two-year musical pilgrimage around West Africa with his friend Mansour Seck. He then recorded albums with Seck, including the desert blues classic Djam Leelii, and with the band Daande Lenol (The Voice of the People). Since the 1980s, he has released several solo albums, toured the world several times over, worked with Hans Zimmer on the soundtrack to Black Hawk Down, and collaborated with the likes of Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, Tony Allen and U2. Despite his international perspective, he has always acknowledged his roots by singing in Pulaar, the Fulani dialect of the Senegal River valley.

Like a balmy breeze from a world of endless summer, Classixx are back with Faraway Reach, a buoyant follow-up to their 2013 debut – something to cruise to with the top down, from festival fields to the beach, from the dance floor to the shotgun seat. The album traverses locales, vocalists and inspirations. It’s a fitting movement for the duo, from Venice beach to the mountains of South Africa and everywhere in between.

Brazilian Girls’ music incorporates bits of reggae, electronica, jazz, bossa nova, and you name it. Despite their name, no one in the band is Brazilian. The sexy/quirky/mysterious group is comprised of three men – Didi Gutman on keyboards and computers, Jesse Murphy on bass, and Aaron Johnston on drums – and one woman, Sabina Sciubba, the vocalist who often enjoys wearing lacy eye masks on-stage and sings in no less than five different languages.

The 2016 Sound in Focus concert series takes place at Century Park in the centerpiece park adjacent to the Annenberg Space for Photography and Skylight Studios. Both exhibition spaces will stay open late on these evenings (until 11pm) so that the concertgoers may enjoy both the concerts and REFUGEE, the current exhibition at the Photography Space, as well as the Skylight Studios installation New Americans. Powerful and timely, REFUGEE  features original images commissioned exclusively for the exhibition, and illuminates the global refugee crisis through the eyes of five internationally acclaimed photographers. A documentary short and VR experience accompanies the exhibition. The multimedia installation New Americans shares the inspiring stories of refugees who are building new lives after being resettled in the United States.

Concertgoers will have the opportunity to show their support for the thousands of families forced to flee for their lives each day by signing UNHCR’s #WithRefugees petition in the Photography Space, Skylight Studios or online. The petition calls on world leaders to work together and do their fair share for refugees, and will be delivered to UN headquarters for the UN General Assembly in September.

There will also be food and refreshments available for purchase from a wide variety of cafes and food trucks that can be enjoyed on the grassy lawn beneath the shimmering Century Plaza Towers at Century Park, and beer gardens for those 21 and over.

KCRW and the Annenberg Foundation first united in 2012 for a string of hugely successful summer music events to accompany the Who Shot Rock & Roll exhibit. 2014’s Country in the City series not only spotlighted emerging and established artists in the genre, but was part of the Annenberg Foundation’s 25th anniversary festivities. Last year’s series saw thousands of concertgoers enjoy headlining performances by TV on the Radio, De La Soul, Dwight Yoakam, and Cold War Kids.

KCRW and The Hammer Museum Announce Line-Up for “Disappear Here: Music Made in L.A.”

Los Angeles, CA (June 14, 2016) – KCRW and the Hammer Museum once again partner this July to present four Thursday nights of live bands and DJ sets as part of KCRW’s Summer Nights series. Free and open to the public, this year’s series, Disappear Here: Music Made in L.A. features live concerts from noteworthy Los Angeles musicians, and sets from KCRW DJs, in the Hammer Museum’s lively courtyard.

The series kicks off on Thursday, July 7 with a DJ set from Los Angeles duo Poolside (né Filip Nikolic & Jeffrey Paradise). After a releasing a steady stream of buzzworthy tracks online, including a brilliant reinvention of Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon,” the duo hunkered down in their poolside studio (literally) and cranked out, Pacific Standard Time one of the most casually blissed-out, fully realized debuts in recent memory. Producer, arranger, composer, musician, radio host, and DJ Carlos Niño & Friends also perform and KCRW’s Aaron Byrd launches the evening with his own DJ set.

On Thursday, July 14, LA-based Stones Throw Records, celebrates their 20th anniversary with a headlining set from record label founder/DJ Peanut Butter Wolf, recently named one of LA Weekly’s top 20 DJ’s. Whether it’s a private dinner party for the Clintons, a string of dates with the Beastie Boys, or a 12 hour Boiler Room set, he is always at home behind the turntables. Wolf, who has also discovered Mayer Hawthorne, Madlib and Anderson .Paak, taps label-mate Mndsgn to perform tracks off of his debut album Yawn Zen. Concertgoers will also be treated to an opening set from KCRW DJ Mathieu Schreyer.

On Thursday, July 21, LA-based / Tijuana-raised Ceci Bastida brings her blend of Latin, electronica, rock, hip-hop, and social commentary to the stage. She was nominated for a Latin Grammy for her 2011 release Veo La Marea (I See the Tide), which featured guests Diplo, Rye Rye, Niña Dioz, and Tim Armstrong. Her latest solo album, La Edad de la Violencia (The Age of Violence) includes songs influenced by the rise of everyday violence in the US and Mexico. KCRW’s Anthony Valadez starts off the evening with a DJ set. More artists to be announced.

The series closes on Thursday, July 28, with Young Art Presents TOKiMONSTA featuring vocalist Ambré and additional special guests. Known for her unique take on electronic, hip-hop, and dance music, TOKiMONSTA will be joined by vocalist Ambré and other surprise guests from her imprint Young Art Records. Launched in 2014 with the release of TOKiMONTSA’s album Desiderium, Young Art was created to provide a home for her work, and to help nurture the creative output of artists she believes in. Young Art’s releases include TOKI’s collaborations with breakout artist Anderson .Paak as well as Montreal producer CRi’s Tell Her EP. The electrifying evening starts off with a DJ set by KCRW’s Travis Holcombe.

Happy hour with food and cash bar starts at 6:30 p.m., KCRW DJ sets start at 7:30 p.m., and live music starts at 8:15 p.m. The museum’s gallery hours will be extended to 9 p.m. so guests can enjoy the Hammer’s museum-wide exhibition Made in L.A. 2016: a, the, though, only, the third iteration of the biennial exhibition of emerging art from Los Angeles. Made in L.A. focuses exclusively on artists from the L.A. region with an emphasis on emerging and under-recognized artists. The Los Angeles biennial presents new bodies of work, newly commissioned works from emerging artists, and condensed surveys. Ranging from painting and sculpture to film and video, large- and small-scale installation, and performances, to name a few, the biennial gives a snapshot of current practices coming out of Los Angeles, one of the most active and energetic art communities in the world.

Convenient parking is available under the museum for a $6 flat rate after 6PM. Parking for visitors with disabilities is provided on levels P1 and P3. In the event that the museum parking garage is full, use this map for additional parking options. Bicycles park free.

It’s also easy to reach the Hammer by public transportation. The 20/720 buses and Santa Monica and Culver City Bus Lines all stop within one block of the museum. You can also take the Metro Expo Line to Westwood/Rancho Park and transfer to the northbound 8 bus, which stops just outside the museum.

KCRW and the Annenberg Foundation are pleased to announce the lineup for the 2016 Sound in Focus series – three, free, all-ages concerts held at Century Park in Century City, home of the Annenberg Space for Photography.

The series kicks-off on Saturday, July 9 with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, openers Imarhan, and KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley. The series continues on Saturday, July 16 with talent to be announced. The series concludes on Saturday, July 23 with Nas, Wild Belle, and KCRW DJ Garth Trinidad.

“In just a few, short years, Sound in Focus has evolved into the crown jewel of our free summer programs – transforming Century Park into a vibrant space for the community to engage in music and the art of photography,” commented KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley. “From any vantage point, I find myself marveling at the wonders of human engineering. The setting feels very futuristic. As people stream into the green space with blankets and family in tow, curious minds explore the space, settling in to enjoy an evening of live music and the adjacent photo galleries.”

Bentley continued, “I’m proud of what we have achieved in establishing Sound in Focus as an anticipated public program, and special credit goes to the collaborative teams at KCRW and the Annenberg Foundation for producing a near flawless experience for the lucky fans who make it out.”

“At its heart, the Annenberg Space for Photography is a place for people to come together around great art — art that moves us, and astonishes us, and stirs our very souls. That’s why, for four years running, Sound in Focus has been a natural extension of our core mission,” said Wallis Annenberg, Chairman, President and CEO of the Annenberg Foundation. “By showcasing some of the best in music today — by working closely with our great partner KCRW to turn the Annenberg Space for Photography into a dynamic and exciting public space — I believe we can inspire and ignite even more Angelenos with the power of artistic expression. And we can all have a lot of fun doing it, too.”

Admission to the Sound in Focus series is free; however, RSVP is required for entry but does not guarantee admission which will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Registered guests must collect wristbands upon arrival at check-in to gain access to the concerts. Advance registration is available at KCRW.com/soundinfocus and is required for every show.

The 2016 Sound in Focus series launches on July 9 with a headlining set from 10-piece musical extravaganza Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros – led by singer-songwriter Alex Ebert. Considered pioneers of the folk-pop revival, the band’s self-produced albums have experienced popular success (plus one platinum song, “Home”). The band’s 4th studio album PersonA was recently released this April, and was recorded almost entirely in one room together in New Orleans. It is the band’s live shows, however, that have seen them celebrated by fans and critics alike. Performed without set lists, the concerts spark spontaneous improvisation, with Ebert often spending a portion of the show singing amongst the crowd.

KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley hosts the evening and will spin a set before Southern-Algerian band Imarhan delight with their modern take on Tuareg music, blending the funkier groove of Western Africa, the emptier, subtle tones of Saharan Traditional folk music and the fire and romance of Algerian Rai music.

The Sound in Focus series continues on Saturday, July 16 with talent to be announced.

The series closes on Saturday, July 23 with gifted poet, confessor, agitator, metaphor master, street’s disciple, political firebrand, and tongue-twisting genius, Nas. With music in his blood courtesy of famed blues musician father Olu Dara, the self-taught trumpeter attracted crowds with his playing at age 4, wrote his first verse at age 7 and, with 1994’s Illmatic, created one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time before he could legally drink. Two decades on, Nas remains an incendiary, outspoken and brutally candid rapper. His recently released tenth album, Life is Good, was his sixth to debut at the top of the Billboard 200.

KCRW DJ Garth Trinidad hosts and spins a set before brother-and-sister duo Wild Belle perform their brand of folk-, dance-, reggae-, and psychedelic rock-tinged indie pop. Their sophomore release, Dreamland, released this April, saw the pair deliver a deep, full-sounding album and a welcome follow-up to their debut album Isles.

The 2016 Sound in Focus concert series takes place at Century Park in the centerpiece park adjacent to the Annenberg Space for Photography and Skylight Studios. Both exhibition spaces will stay open late on these evenings (until 11pm) so that the concertgoers may enjoy both the concerts and REFUGEE, the current exhibition at the Photography Space, as well as the Skylight Studios installation New Americans. Powerful and timely, REFUGEE  features original images commissioned exclusively for the exhibition, and illuminates the global refugee crisis through the eyes of five internationally acclaimed photographers. A documentary short and VR experience accompanies the exhibition. The multimedia installation New Americans shares the inspiring stories of refugees who are building new lives after being resettled in the United States.

Concertgoers will have the opportunity to show their support for the thousands of families forced to flee for their lives each day by signing UNHCR’s #WithRefugees petition in the Photography Space, Skylight Studios or online. The petition calls on world leaders to work together and do their fair share for refugees, and will be delivered to UN headquarters for the UN General Assembly in September.

There will also be food and refreshments available for purchase from a wide variety of cafes and food trucks that can be enjoyed on the grassy lawn beneath the shimmering Century Plaza Towers at Century Park, and beer gardens for those 21 and over.

KCRW and the Annenberg Foundation first united in 2012 for a string of hugely successful summer music events to accompany the Who Shot Rock & Roll exhibit. 2014’s Country in the City series not only spotlighted emerging and established artists in the genre, but was part of the Annenberg Foundation’s 25th anniversary festivities. Last year’s series saw thousands of concertgoers enjoy headlining performances by TV on the Radio, De La Soul, Dwight Yoakam, and Cold War Kids.

The series launches on June 4 with a live performance by New York duo Sofi Tukker and a DJ set from Gary Calamar in the courtyard amidst the historic buildings of One Colorado in Old Pasadena.

This year, the public radio station will expand its Summer Nights series to Santa Barbara and Orange County, and will continue partnerships with the Annenberg Foundation, Hammer Museum, Chinatown, and Santa Monica Pier.

One Colorado:

KCRW’s Summer Nights kicks-off on Saturday, June 4 at 7:30 at Old Pasadena’s One Colorado featuring New York duo Sofi Tukker. Their weirdly wonderful pop single “Drinkee” has been a favorite on KCRW’s airwaves for many months and the duo will be on Morning Becomes Eclectic on June 7. Sofi Tukker recently finished their debut EP titled, Soft Animals, having created a truly unique sound blending global instrumentation with modern technology. KCRW DJ Valida opens with a DJ set and closes the night spinning some of her favorite tracks.

On Saturday, June 11th, One Colorado continues with local duo, The Palms. Born and raised in L.A., The Palms bridge the gap between Laurel Canyon folk and West Coast beats to create a modern day “LA sound.” DJ Gary Calamar opens the show, and closes out the night with a DJ set.

One Colorado is a collection of 17 historic buildings housing a curated mix of nationally acclaimed retailers and designers, unique local merchants, inventive restaurants, and a boutique cinema. It’s the retail centerpiece and favorite casual gathering place for the Pasadena community, with public events hosted year-round in its central courtyard.

KCRW’s Summer Nights expands into Orange County and Santa Barbara forging new partnerships with the Anaheim Packing District and the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara.

Anaheim residents and visitors alike are enjoying a new communal gathering place in the heart of Anaheim, complete with refurbished historic structures and the Packing House which hosts over twenty artisan eateries and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Santa Monica, CA (March 10) – Los Angeles-based public radio station KCRW has announced the live broadcast schedule from the 2016 SXSW conference in Austin, TX. KCRW will broadcast live from FLOODfest at Cedar Street on Friday, March 18 during Morning Becomes Eclectic (9AM – Noon PST) and Saturday, March 19 (Noon to 6:00 PM PST) with DJs Anne Litt and Raul Campos.

KCRW also kicks off the convention with two official showcases on Wednesday, March 16.  The first features White Denim, Declan McKenna and Lapsley on the Radio Day Stage from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. In the evening, KCRW is proud to present the very first nighttime showcase at a brand new venue, 3TEN at Austin City Limits, featuring Ra Ra Riot, Eliot Sumner, Joon Moon, Cloves, Marlon Williams and Sofi Tukker from 8:00 pm to 2:00 am.
