Groundbreaking Concert Series Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Santa Monica, CA (February 5, 2019) – The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association has announced today the line-up for the 2019 KCRW’s World Festival at the Hollywood Bowl. The successful collaboration between KCRW and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association celebrates its 20th anniversary, and launches Sunday, June 16, at 7PM.

KCRW’s World Festival at the Hollywood Bowl embodies the eclectic musical spirit of both organizations by featuring artists from a wide array of genres. Hundreds of artists have performed at the iconic venue since the inaugural season including, A.R. Rahman, Adele, Arcade Fire, Ben Harper, Bon Iver, Caetano Veloso, Cesaria Evora, David Byrne, Erykah Badu, Femi Kuti, Goldfrapp, Grace Jones, Hot Chip, Hugh Masekela, Janelle Monae, Kraftwerk, Lauryn Hill, M83, Massive Attack, Miriam Makeba, Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club, Os Mutantes, Ray LaMontagne, Robyn, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Sade, Santigold, Solange, Spoon, St. Vincent, Sufjan Stevens, The Flaming Lips, The Pixies, Underworld, Willie Nelson, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Yo Yo Ma, Yoko Ono, Zero 7 with Sia, Ziggy Marley, and many more. Since making their debut in 2004, Chromeo have turned festivals around the world into gigantic outdoor dance parties. Taking cues from Prince and Daft Punk, the Montreal duo have forged a brand of electro-funk that’s equal parts vintage groove and futurist fantasy. Toro y Moi’s Chaz Bear has followed his own omnivorous taste throughout a fascinating career that encompasses collagist sampling, laid-back funk, smooth rock, and existential R&B, all of it set to a club-ready dance beat. Chicago-born rapper and poet Noname, known for her thought-provoking message and freestyle skills, garnered national notoriety from her collaboration with Chance the Rapper, and her star has been rising ever since. She’s released two universally acclaimed records which led Rolling Stone to declare her as “one of the best rappers alive.” Brooklyn-born Ian Isiah (aka Big Shugga) was raised on gospel music, and has infused his heart and soul into a new brand of modern R&B and radio rap. The Blood Orange collaborator is also a key player in NY’s underground DJ club culture and the LGBTQ movement, having found the sweet spot where music meets lifestyle.

Santa Monica, CA (July 16, 2018) – KCRW announces today, details for a brand-new Summer Nights series – the first-ever Backyard Party @ KCRW HQ, free, outdoors, and all-ages at KCRW’s new home on Santa Monica College’s state-of-the-art CMD Campus. This three-concert series launches with The Midnight Hour – the project from Ali Shaheed Muhammad (of A Tribe Called Quest) and composer Adrian Younge – performing with an 18-piece band on August 4. On August 11, Jim James will treat everyone to a luscious solo acoustic performance. The series will close with a blistering DJ set by Henry Rollins. KCRW DJs Garth Trinidad, Travis Holcombe, Liza Richardson, Chris Douridas, Dan Wilcox, and Eric J. Lawrence will also be delivering killer DJ sets throughout the series.

Backyard Party @ KCRW also features Good Food’s Evan Kleiman’s favorite food trucks, record collectors and dealers hand-selected by Beats Swap Meet, a bar, and plenty of summer fun.

More about the Artists:

When two of hip-hop’s most accomplished composers get together to make an album, you know the results are going to be special. Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest) & Adrian Younge began their work together in 2013 on the critically acclaimed album There Is Only Now. Their partnership cemented on the score work for Marvel’s Luke Cage. The duo’s long awaited album as The Midnight Hour is carefully constructed and masterful, and showcases their songwriting ability like never before. The 20-track double album, was recently released June 8, on Linear Labs, and distributed digitally by INgrooves with vinyl distributed by Traffic Entertainment. The lead track and first single “Questions” features CeeLo Green and perfectly captures the album’s underlying roots in hip-hop’s origins.

Flipping through the pages of The Last Whole Earth Catalogue, a resource that was, in 1971, basically the internet before the internet, Jim James stumbled upon a distorted photo of “The Illuminated Man” by Duane Michals. Immediately moved by the photo, he asked for permission to use the image as the album cover of his third solo album Uniform Distortion. The first request to Michals was rejected. In hopes of changing his mind, James wrote a letter to Michals, personally, and was ultimately allowed to use the image. In the letter James wrote “the name of my new record is ‘UNIFORM DISTORTION’ because i feel like there is this blanket distortion on society/media and the way we gather our ‘news’ and important information…and more and more of us are feeling lost and looking for new ways out of this distortion and back to the truth…and finding hope in places like the desert where i write this email to you now…finding hope in the land and in the water and in old books offering new ideas and most importantly in each other and love.”

In describing Henry Rollins, the tendency is to try to squeeze as many labels as possible into a single sentence. “Rollins is many things,” says The Washington Post, “diatribist, confessor, provocateur, humorist, even motivational speaker…his is an enthusiastic and engaging chatter.” Entertainment Weekly’s list includes “Punk Rock icon. Spoken word poet. Actor. Author. DJ. Is there anything this guy can’t do?” TV Guide has more concisely called him a “Renaissance Man” but if Henry Rollins could be reduced to a single word, that word would undoubtedly be “workaholic.” When he’s not traveling, Rollins prefers a to keep a relentless schedule full of work, with gigs as an actor, author, DJ, voice-over artist and TV show host to name a few of the roles that keep his schedule full. Rollins has toured the world as a spoken word artist, as frontman for both Rollins Band and Black Flag and as a solitary traveler with insatiable curiosity, favoring road-less-traveled locales in places such as Nepal, Sri Lanka, Siberia, North Korea, South Sudan and Iran.

KCRW AND THE HAMMER MUSEUM ANNOUNCE LINE-UP FOR 2018 SUMMER NIGHTS

Los Angeles, CA (May 31, 2018) – KCRW and the Hammer Museum team up once again to present three nights of live music and DJ sets as part of KCRW’s Summer Nights series, Thursdays, July 12, 19, and 26. This year’s series features Cut Chemist, Kauf, Still Woozy, Sam Evian, Neil Frances, and KCRW DJs Jeremy Sole, Valida, and Anthony Valadez. All concerts are free, open to the public, all-ages, and held outdoors in the Hammer’s lively courtyard. The museum’s galleries will be open late so guests can enjoy the Hammer’s acclaimed biennial exhibition Made in L.A. 2018.

The series launches on Thursday, July 12, with a headlining set from producer, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Still Woozy. Mixing acoustic sounds with electronic elements, Still Woozy is the solo project of Sven Gamsky who writes, records, and produces from his Oakland, CA, garage. KCRW DJ Jeremy Sole kicks off the evening, followed by a set from the Los Angeles-based electronic duo Neil Frances.

On Thursday, July 19, the series continues with a headlining performance by electronic producer Kauf, whose dance music is informed by a songwriter structure and propelled by disco rhythms. Kauf’s debut album Regrowth was released last October. KCRW DJ Valida opens the evening, followed by a live set from Sam Evian, the solo project of New York-based musician, songwriter, and producer, Sam Owens.

The series closes on Thursday, July 26, with trailblazing DJ/producer Cut Chemist. A founding member of both Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli, Cut Chemist recently released his long-awaited second full-length solo album Die Cut. KCRW DJ Anthony Valadez launches the evening.

Happy hour with food trucks and cash bar starts at 6:30 p.m., and music starts at 7:30 p.m. The museum’s gallery hours will be extended to 9:00 p.m. so guests can take in Made in L.A. 2018, a major exhibition that takes over the entire museum, showcasing artists from the greater Los Angeles area. Through drawings, paintings, sculpture, textiles, performance, video photography, and installations – many newly commissioned for Made in L.A. 2018 – these 33 artists exemplify the diverse and creative landscape of Los Angeles today.

KCRW’s 2018 Summer Nights officially launch on June 2 with a live performance from proto-prog 3-piece Pinky Pinky, and a DJ set from KCRW’s Dan Wilcox. The concert takes place in the courtyard amidst the historic buildings of One Colorado Old Pasadena.

New to 2018 is the first-ever KCRW HQ Summer Nights series taking place at KCRW’s brand-new home on Santa Monica College’s state-of-the-art CMD Campus. Three nights of exceptional music, delicious drink and food, dancing, and a chance to check out KCRW’s new digs, will take place on three Saturdays – August 4, August 11, and August 18. KCRW’s partnerships with organizations across SoCal continue with the second season of concerts at the California African American Museum and Metro Arts Presents at Union Station. KCRW will also continue longstanding partnerships with the Hammer Museum, Chinatown and Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara.

One Colorado Old Pasadena

KCRW’s Summer Nights kick-off on Saturday, June 2, at 7:30 p.m., at One Colorado Old Pasadena featuring a live performance from Pinky Pinky – a 3-piece proto-prog-inspired L.A. trio featuring teenagers Isabelle Fields (17, guitar), Eva Chambers (17, bass), and Anastasia Sanchez (19, vocals/drums). The band preach nothing but good, clean, fun – with a nod to the greats of yesteryear, and a commitment toward the future. KCRW DJ Dan Wilcox opens and closes the evening.

On Saturday, June 16, One Colorado continues with shey baba. The Los Angeles-born singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, spent two years in relative isolation patiently making what would become his stunning debut album, Requiem. With an incredible body of work now complete, shey baba is ready to share something very special. KCRW DJ Chris Douridas opens and closes the evening.

One Colorado Old Pasadena is a collection of 17 historic buildings housing a curated mix of nationally acclaimed retailers and designers, unique local merchants, inventive restaurants, and a boutique cinema. It’s the retail centerpiece and favorite casual gathering place for the Pasadena community, with public events hosted year-round in its central courtyard.

California African American Museum

KCRW returns to the California African American Museum (CAAM) for a very special show featuring KCRW DJs Aaron Byrd and Garth Trinidad, on Saturday, July 14, at 6:00 p.m. This back-by-popular demand CAAM edition of Summer Nights offers food trucks, a beer garden, and after-hours museum access to all of their summer exhibitions including the acclaimed How Sweet the Sound: Gospel Music in Los Angeles.

The California African American Museum (CAAM) in Exposition Park explores the art, history, and culture of African Americans, with an emphasis on California and the West. In addition to presenting a dynamic slate of exhibitions and public programs, CAAM houses a permanent collection of more than four thousand works of art, artifacts, and historical documents, and a publicly accessible research library containing more than twenty thousand volumes. Admission is always free.

Metro Arts Presents at Union Station

KCRW expands its partnership with Metro Art Presents, this year for three Summer Nights, at the historic Union Station in Downtown L.A. Dancing, games, food and drink will flow at one of the city’s most iconic landmarks offering a chance to explore the architectural treasure. While you’re there, you can check out one of the many artworks at the station, including one that sings to you called “A-Train.” If you whisper certain words into a spot in the wall the artwork will sing songs by the likes of Duke Ellington, Lena Horne, and The Beatles.
