KCRW to Program Three Nights of Live Musical Performances for Festival’s Music Café and Broadcast Live from Park City, Utah

All Performances to be Free and Open to the Public (21 and Older)

Los Angeles, CA & Park City, UTKCRW and Sundance Institute today announced that the LA public radio station will host three nights (January 18-20) of live musical performances at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival Music Café and broadcast live from the Acura studio space in Park City, Utah January 19-20. This will mark the first-ever formal programming collaboration between the independent film festival and a radio station.

KCRW’s programming for the Festival will feature emerging composers, singer-songwriters and beat-makers and will focus on celebrating the role of music in movies. KCRW DJs and music supervisors Jason Bentley and Anne Litt will co-host live radio broadcasts from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. PT on Saturday, January 19 and Sunday, January 20 at the Acura studio space inside the Park City Museum with luminaries in both the film and music world. Highlights from the weekend will air on Morning Becomes Eclectic the following week, while the Festival is still underway.

Bentley said, “KCRW celebrates the intersection of music and film throughout the year, and having a presence at Sundance Film Festival brings this commitment into sharp relief. We’re working on an exciting evening music program for the Music Café as well as our daytime broadcasts so folks back home will feel the excitement of the independent film world’s most creative forum.”

John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, said, “Both the Sundance Film Festival and KCRW are recognized for discovering and sharing the work of emerging artists, which makes this collaboration both exciting and fitting. In addition, the Sundance Film Festival has long featured music programming to reflect the profound collaboration and inspiration filmmakers find with music artists, and engaging with KCRW further elevates that connection.”

KCRW’s programming complements additional musical components of the Festival, including daytime performances programmed by ASCAP and A Celebration of Music in Film event programmed by the Sundance Institute Film Music program.

Hear remixes by four KCRW DJs and a live cover of “Main Man” by Portugal. The Man at KCRW.com/TREX

“Solid Gold Easy Action” (DJ Dan Wilcox remix) is available for download.

SANTA MONICA, CA  July 6, 2012 — Glam rockers T. Rex influenced many of the bands that have passed through the studios of KCRW (89.9FM and KCRW.com) – from Beck to MGMT – and now, in conjunction with Spirit Music, DJs from the Los Angeles-based public radio station have remixed four of their tracks for the T. Rex vs. KCRW Soundclash” Remix EP.

All of the songs getting the remix treatment were Top 20 charting singles that came out in the wake of T. Rex’s seminal album “The Slider”. The EP closes with a cover of “Main Man” from “The Slider” recorded live in KCRW’s studios by Portugal. The Man.

Hear the tracks online now exclusively at kcrw.com/TREX and download a remix of “Solid Gold Easy Action that takes glam rock straight to the dancefloor.

“The subjects of KCRW’s Soundclashseries so far have been Femi Kuti, Ozomatli, David Bowie, and now the legendary Marc Bolan,” said KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley. It’s no simple task to reinvent a true rock ‘n’ roll classic, but our DJs have risen to the occasion with an inspired take on Bolan’s pop masterworks.”

The physical EP will be available on July 21, the 40th anniversary of the release of “The Slider”. KCRW is hosting a live performance from Portugal. The Man at the Annenberg Space for Photography and the first 500 people to arrive will get a free copy of the EP. (RSVP here)

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with KCRW, a world renowned curator of all things cool and classic, to celebrate the legacy of T. Rex.  The new remixes artfully push sonic envelopes just like Marc Bolan did decades ago and the concert will be a brilliant celebration of the timeless power of his music and legacy,” said Spirit Music Group President/CEO Mark Fried.

KCRW DJ and award-winning music supervisor Gary Calamar (True Blood/House/Dexter) gives “Children of the Revolution” an ambient groove to kick off the EP, followed by an industrial-inspired take on “Teenage Dream” from Chuck P. Dan Wilcox gives the salacious “Solid Gold Easy Action” a disco-fied remix with help from the beatmaster of LA band Pollyn, while Liza Richardson, also an acclaimed music supervisor (Friday Night Lights/ Parenthood), loops in famed DJ Harvey to add pounding percussion to the spirited rock anthem “20th Century Boy”.

Best of all, Bolan’s trademark vocals integrate seamlessly with all the updated versions of his songs, further proving his musical sensibilities are timeless.

KCRW Premieres Iggy Pop + Bethany Cosentino Duet for True Blood — “Let’s Boot and Rally”

KCRW Premieres Iggy Pop + Bethany Cosentino Duet
for True Blood — “Let’s Boot and Rally”

Stream it on the KCRW Music Blog now and tune in at 10:20am to hear the radio debut on Morning Becomes Eclectic

KCRW DJ Gary Calamar co-wrote the track which will air on the July 8 episode of the HBO show.

SANTA MONICA, CA, July 5, 2012 – Los Angeles public radio station KCRW (89.9FM and KCRW.com) is premiering “Let’s Boot and Rally”, a duet by Iggy Pop and Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino recorded for the July 8 episode of HBO’s True Blood. The track, co–written by KCRW DJ Gary Calamar, can be heard right now on KCRW’s Music Blog. Calamar also shares the story behind how the collaboration came about.

Calamar will join KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley to debut the track on air on Morning Becomes Eclectic at 10:20am this morning.

“To me, it sounds like classic punk rock Iggy. And Bethany’s vocals take it over the top. They sound beautiful together,” said Calamar.

Calamar has music supervised all five seasons of the show and has put together notable collaborations in the past. Neko Case and Nick Cave teamed up to do The Zombies “She’s Not There” and Karen Elson and Donovan took on “Season Of The Witch“.

This was a case of a tight deadline breeding inspiration. Each episode of True Blood is named after a song used in a show and rather than change the name of an episode called “Boot and Rally”, Calamar called on his friend, songwriter James Combs, to help craft a tune that would work.

Pop had already declared himself a fan of the vampire drama and signed up after hearing a demo. Best Coasts LA-based frontwoman jumped at the chance to sing with the punk hero and the rest is history.

Calamar received Grammy Award nominations three years in a row for his work on the True Blood soundtracks. His weekly KCRW show airs Sundays from 6 to 8pm PST.

KCRW Returns as Official Radio Sponsor for the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC)

KCRW DJ Raul Campos will serve as the official LAMC host for his 5th year for major events at
Central Park SummerStage and Celebrate Brooklyn At Prospect Park

LAMC runs from July 11 – 14 in New York City.

KCRW (89.9FM and KCRW.com) returns as the official presenting radio sponsor for the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC), with DJ Raul Campos taking the reins as host of the festivities for the 5th year in a row.

“KCRW has been a constant and, at times, singular voice for many of the bands that are featured at the LAMC,” said LAMC founder Tomas Cookman.  “We feel that there is no better radio outlet in the country to partner up with that understands the many different sounds and genres that fall under the LAMC and Latin Alternative umbrella as does KCRW.”

LAMC features up and coming Latin artists such as LA’s own La Santa Cecilia as well as established icons like Kinky. The annual conference, held in New York July 11 – 14, features concerts all over the city – including Central Park SummerStage and Celebrate Brooklyn at Prospect Park – as well as an array of panels.

“There is nothing else like LAMC, where the Latin world converges on NYC for 4 days of great music. It’s opened up my ears to so many new artists and gives us a chance to experience favorites that rarely venture to the U.S.,” said Ariana Morgenstern, producer of KCRW’s signature music show Morning Becomes Eclectic.

In addition to his hosting duties Campos, whose show airs weeknights from 10pm to midnight PST on KCRW, will be included on a panel entitled “Finding Your Audience in the Ever-Changing Radio Landscape”, which will discuss how public radio, satellite and other specialty programs are providing new opportunities for Latin artists.

The panel is on Thursday, July 12 at 2pm.

Check out the  2012 LAMC line-up playlist on Spotify to hear music from all the bands performing this year. Registration is currently discounted at only $199 until July 1st.

“Since it’s inception, LAMC has been about taking an underground and alternative sound and exposing it to the masses. The symbiotic relationship that exists between LAMC and KCRW is magical. We’re on the same mission and it’s very gratifying to know how we’ve championed this sound and helped a lot of these acts become household names.” DJ Raul Campos

SANTA MONICA, CA, June 21, 2012KCRW (89.9FM and KCRW.com) is pleased to announce the launch of the KCRW Music Mine app for Spotify. The first US radio station to take its music offering straight from the airwaves to the Spotify Platform, the app is now available for installation from within the Spotify desktop client.

From quick discovery to deep exploration, the app takes listeners on an audio adventure of artists handpicked by tastemakers at the LA public radio station. The app is modeled after KCRW’s critically-acclaimed iPad app, also called Music Mine, launched last fall.

KCRW Music Mine for Spotify
displays up to 100 tracks at a time, handpicked by the station’s world famous DJ staff, and updated daily in tandem with our on air playlists. This special format enables time-crunched users to create their own listening experience by streaming KCRW playlists and adding them to their own collection to revisit in the future. Explore Spotify’s offering from artists that have the KCRW stamp of approval without being overwhelmed by options.

Spotify’s musical offerings are tremendous and as music consumers adapt this technology into their listening habit, KCRW will be right there offering a curated list of the best music from around the world,” said Director of New Media for KCRW Anil Dewan.

KCRW Music Mine for Spotify is the latest in the station’s continuing effort to bring the Music Mine technology to additional platforms. Over the past several months, KCRW has implemented several technologically progressive initiatives which allow listeners more freedom to chose how to consume the station’s content.

Last week, the station announced the launch of their HD-2 channel which will broadcast Eclectic24, KCRW’s 24-hour music channel. In January, KCRW became one of the first public stations to simulcast music and news streams on iHeartRadio.
