KCRW Celebrates Latin Music from Coast to Coast

KCRW Returns as the Radio Sponsor for the 15th Year of the
Latin Alternative Music Conference
July 8-12 in NYC

KCRW DJ Raul Campos is the official host of LAMC for the 7th year in a row and will broadcast his show live from the fest on July 12 and 13

Today’s Top Tune, the station’s free download program, will feature a full week of songs from LAMC artists.

SANTA MONICA, CA (June 18, 2014) — This summer, the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) is celebrating its Quinceañera – 15 years of sharing the best in Latin music from across the globe over four days (July 8-12) in New York City.

Public radio station KCRW returns as the official radio sponsor and will feature special programming in Los Angeles while the event is underway in New York City July 8 – 12th.

KCRW DJ Raul Campos serves as the official LAMC host for his 7th year and will broadcast from New York on July 12 and 13, from 3 – 6pm PT.  The last hour of each show will be dedicated to LAMC and his Latin music discoveries.

He’ll also MC major events like Celebrate Brooklyn at Prospect Park, featuring artists like ChocQuibTown, and the annual set of LAMC Central Park SummerStage free concerts with Ana Tijoux, Juana Molina, La Santa Cecilia and more.

“The vibrancy and energy of NYC is like no other, and with fantastic showcases and concerts at beautiful outdoor venues like Central Park and Prospect Park, you simply can’t go wrong. This year’s conference is already shaping up to being extra special. Last year’s “Discovery” honors went to the Chilean band Astro and I’m really excited to see how they’ve progressed and matured. Being a native Angeleno, I’m also thrilled (and proud) that LA darlings La Santa Cecilia will be performing on the big stage at Central Park,” said Campos.

Back in Los Angeles, KCRW will spotlight new Latin music by offering free daily song downloads of LAMC artists as part of Today’s Top Tune from July 7-11, including Argentinian singer-songwriter Juana Molina and Uruguayan band Sante Les Amis. Also, Colombian-based music mastermind Quantic will perform songs from his latest solo effort “Magnetica” on Morning Becomes Eclectic on July 7. A Latin flavor always pervades his music, which is a seductive mix of many genres and global sounds.

KCRW blogger Jose Galvan will also feature some of his favorite bands from the wide-reaching genre as part of the Pan Caliente series.

KCRW Breaks Ground on New 35,000-Square-Foot State-of-the-Art Media Center, Milestone in $48 Million Capital Campaign

SANTA MONICA, CA (June 12, 2014)—Yesterday, KCRW broke ground on a new 35,000-square-foot state-of-the-art Media Center, to be located on Santa Monica College’s Academy of Entertainment & Technology Campus.  A momentous occasion, KCRW President and General Manager Jennifer Ferro and Santa Monica College (SMC) Superintendent and President Dr. Chui L. Tsang led the ceremony, and were joined by KCRW Foundation Board Chairman Michael Fleming, special guest and performer Ben Harper, and KCRW’s closest supporters and staff.  The groundbreaking also marked a milestone in the first major capital campaign of KCRW’s 75-year history to raise $48 million for the Media Center design and construction, new programming, and technology investments.

“This is an incredibly important moment in KCRW’s history – we couldn’t be more thankful to our licensee and partner Santa Monica College, Santa Monica voters, and our generous supporters for their vital contributions in bringing the KCRW Media Center to life,” said Jennifer Ferro, KCRW President and General Manager.  “For the first time in our 75-year history we will be able to bring the community into our home and share the incredible performances and discussions that take place on a daily basis.”

“It is our great pleasure to welcome KCRW to the Santa Monica College Academy of Entertainment & Technology Campus,” said Dr. Chui L. Tsang, Santa Monica College Superintendent and President.  “We share a unique synergy with KCRW, and look forward to creating a dynamic learning environment for our students who are passionate about journalism, media, and radio.”

To-date, KCRW has secured $33 million of the total $48 million capital campaign goal, including a $28 million contribution from Santa Monica College, licensee of KCRW, with funding from 2008 Bond Measure AA.  KCRW graciously thanked other major donors at the groundbreaking ceremony, including The Annenberg Foundation, Norris and Debi Bishton, The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation, Tom and Ellie Wertheimer, Borzi Family Foundation, Kayne Foundation (Ric & Suzanne Kayne and Jenni, Maggie & Saree), The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, Santa Barbara Foundation, Monica J. Shilling, and Jay and Susan Markowitz, among others.

“KCRW’s innovative programs and live events inspire the imagination and bring communities together,” said Wallis Annenberg, Chairman of the Board, President and CEO of The Annenberg Foundation, KCRW’s largest private donor.  “They provide an invaluable public service to Southern Californians and listeners worldwide. We are thrilled to be a part of this illustrious endeavor.”

Over the past 30 years, KCRW’s staff has grown from 14 to 110 in extremely cramped offices and studios beneath Santa Monica College campus.  The new KCRW Media Center is designed to preserve the station’s collaborative culture, while creating community gathering spaces, integrating state-of-the-art production facilities, and allowing for future growth.  Designed by Clive Wilkinson Architects, a global leader in workplace innovation, the new building will also meet LEED Silver Certification standards, maximizing energy and water efficiency, and indoor environmental quality.

With a history of bringing unique live experiences to Southern California and around the country, KCRW will for the first time in its history be able to host the community at its own 1,400 square-foot Performance Studio and Viewing Gallery.  KCRW will also have the opportunity to program events at the 18,000-square-foot Wallis Annenberg Plaza Courtyard and Outdoor Stage and a 180-seat auditorium.

SMC’s Academy of Entertainment & Technology Campus is located in the middle of Santa Monica’s creative business district, and the forthcoming Expo Line.  The campus will include a newly-remodeled 50,000 square-foot teaching facility, a new 30,000 square-foot addition with TV and production studios, a cafe, and a new 430-space parking garage.  Construction is projected for completion by 2015, with both the KCRW Media Center and SMC Academy of Entertainment & Technology Campus operating from the new buildings by early 2016.

Free concerts inspired by the Annenberg Space for Photography’s latest exhibit, Country: Portraits of an American Sound. 

KCRW is pleased to announce the lineup for Country in the City, a free, all ages concert series inspired by Country: Portraits of an American Sound, held at Century Park in Century City.

RSVP is required for entry. No tickets are needed. However, registered guests must collect wristbands upon arrival at check in to gain access to concerts.  Admission is free. Gregg Allman, who is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee as a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, headlines the first evening on July 19. Named one of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time” by Rolling Stone, Allman recently released “All My Friends: Celebrating the Songs & Voice of Gregg Allman,” a live album that include guest performances by many of his contemporaries such as Trace Adkins, Jackson Browne, Martina McBride, Vince Gill, John Hiatt, Widespread Panic and many more.

Opening the evening will be Nashville’s latest buzz-worthy artist, Sturgill Simpson. A throwback to the honky-tonk days of love ballads and outlaw life, Simpson’s latest release, “Metamodern Sounds In Country Music” has seen high praise from major outlets and is headed for a big year.

Alabama native, Grammy winner and longtime KCRW favorite Shelby Lynne brings a full band on July 26.  Lynne has been making music since she was 7 years old, inspired by the songs of George Jones, Dottie West and Waylon Jennings. She’s a candid songwriter and heart-wrenching performer who always shines on stage.

Jamestown Revival opens the July 26 show. They are one of the most promising bands in Los Angeles and their debut, dedicated to their move west from Texas, has been an Americana favorite this year.  Expect impeccable harmonies with a good dose of “back porch-style” storytelling.

Wynonna is one of the biggest names in modern country music, whether performing alongside her mother as one half of the legendary duo The Judds, or pushing the boundaries on her own mega-successful solo path. The five-time Grammy winner has sold over 30 million albums worldwide, charted 20 #1 hits and received over 60 industry awards. The iconic performer was once dubbed by Rolling Stone as “the greatest female country singer since Patsy Cline.”  We’re thrilled Wynonna & The Big Noise will perform on August 2.

Opening this show is Nikki Lane, whose sophomore album “All Or Nothin” – produced by The Black Keys’ singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach — is out now on New West Records. She’s widely considered one of the most compelling talents emerging from country music at the moment. With a fearless attitude and Southern swagger, she’ll present a rousing collection of songs that spans genres and eras.

The concerts will take place in the park adjacent to the Annenberg Space for Photography. The Photography Space will stay open late on these evenings (until 10pm) so that the public may enjoy both the concerts and the exhibit, which features images of the pioneers, poets and icons of country music.

There will also be food and refreshments available for purchase from a wide variety of cafes and the food trucks that can be enjoyed on the grassy lawn beneath the two shimmering Century Plaza Towers designed by Minoru Yamasaki. There will also be a beer gardens for those 21 and over to enjoy.

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Annenberg Foundation has planned community events throughout 2014, including Country in the City.

KCRW and the Annenberg Foundation first united in 2012 for a string of hugely successful summer music events staged in the outdoor park adjacent to the Photography Space to accompany the Who Shot Rock & Roll, 1955 to the Present exhibit.

KCRW Launches Summer Nights Series in Old Pasadena with WATERS on June 7

With an undeniable ear for a pop hook and high energy performances, WATERS (a new project from Port O’Brien’s Van Pierszalowski) is poised to be one of the West Coast’s big break out bands this year.

The first single “Got to My Head” is already a KCRW favorite and we’re thrilled to announce the band will be kicking off the public radio station’s Summer Nights series with a performance at One Colorado in Old  Pasadena on Saturday, June 7.

The evening begins at 7:30pm with a DJ set from Dan Wilcox.

(Previously scheduled artist Lo-Fang cancelled due to other tour date conflicts.)

One Colorado spans a city block in Old Pasadena, between Colorado Boulevard, Union, Delacey and Fair Oaks. Make Music Pasadena (presented by KCRW) will be taking place down the street, so early arrival is encouraged!

KCRW returns to One Colorado on June 21 with a performance from orchestral pop outfit Kan Wakan and DJ Marion Hodges on the decks.

KCRW was an early supporter of Kan Wakan – so early, they went by a different name at the time – and we’re thrilled to present their lush, artfully created, noir-kissed sound.

Their full-length debut, “Moving On”, comes out on Verve on June 3.

Summer Nights returns for a fifth year, with more than 30 free, outdoor, all ages concerts that are open to the public.

The free concerts at the Santa Monica Pier are part of KCRW’s Summer Nights Series

Public radio station KCRW returns as the media partner for the Twilight Concert Series at the Santa Monica Pier this summer and is pleased to announce an incredible lineup of musical guests, from Cults, Cayucas and Charles Bradley to Jagwar Ma, Omar Souleyman,Yuna and many more.

The concerts are part of KCRW’s free, all ages Summer Nights series and the station’s DJs will serve as hosts for each of the evenings.

The Twilight Concert Series is now in its 30th year and better than ever.

The shows start on July 10 and take place every Thursday until September 11, with all shows starting at 7pm.

LOS ANGELES, CA (May 19, 2014) — KCRW is celebrating the 5th anniversary of its free, all ages, outdoor concert series, Summer Nights, starting June 7 at One Colorado in Old Pasadena with classically-trained electro pop musician Lo-Fang, an LA artist whose been getting national attention since Lorde hand-selected him to open her first US headlining tour.

Once again, KCRW is partnering with a number of distinguished cultural organizations we love – The Hammer Museum, The Annenberg Space for Photography, and Grand Performances – and reaching neighborhoods across Southern California, including Pasadena, Chinatown, and Santa Monica.

The station’s signature series has reached hundreds of thousands of music fans over the years and given KCRW DJs a chance to bring their eclectic musical tastes out of our basement studios and into the community.

“We’re committed to serving the community throughout the year with exciting music programs that are open to the public. Summer Nights continues to be a way to thank our listeners for their support. See you there,” said Music Director Jason Bentley.  

We kick off the series with two courtyard concerts amidst the historic buildings of One Colorado in Old Pasadena. DJ Dan Wilcox will spin a set of tunes and host Lo-Fang on Saturday, June 7 during Make Music Pasadena, while DJ Marion Hodges welcomes the cinematic orchestral pop sounds of Kan Wakan on Saturday, June 21. Both evenings begin at 7:30pm.

We bring the party straight to the center of Chinatown for three Saturdays (June 14, July 12, August 9), with KCRW DJs like Raul Campos, Anthony Valadez, Jason Bentley and Travis Holcombe rockin’ the dancefloor for thousands of revelers underneath showers of confetti. It’s a true celebration of one of LA’s most unique neighborhoods.

We join Grand Performances for nine events in one of the city’s most breathtaking outdoor venues, California Plaza, in the heart of Downtown LA, featuring Angelique Kidjo, Yuna, Carmen Rizzo, DJ Numark & Mark de Clive-Lowe, and more.

We team up with the Hammer Museum for the “Made in L.A.” music series, with a focus on some of LA’s most enduring club nights, residences and music scenes, from the House sounds of DEEP (with guests Marques Wyatt and Doc Martin) to the multi-cultural celebration of Afro Funke and local label Community Records, with special guest Alex Ebert. KCRW shines a spotlight on these corners of the LA music community for four Thursdays with live band performances and DJ sets in the Hammer courtyard.

Last but not least – and closest to our home base – KCRW will present the Twilight Concert Series at the Santa Monica Pier, with shows every Thursday from July 10 to September 11.  Talent announcement coming soon.

On the grassy lawn beneath the two shimmering Century Plaza towers designed by Minoru Yamasaki, take in a vista of architectural delight and some incredible live music this summer.

XPRIZE and KCRW Launch LOOP Lounge Series With Kick-off Event At YouTube Space LA

Evening Features LA Premiere of Google Lunar XPRIZE Film, “Back To The Moon For Good”

LOS ANGELES (April 2, 2014) — XPRIZE and KCRW launched today the LOOP Lounge Series, which gives people the opportunity to connect in-person with innovators who are leading radical, technological breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity.

The first event will be held on April 15th at YouTube Space LA and will feature the Los Angeles Premiere of the 24-minute Google Lunar XPRIZE Film, “Back To The Moon For Good,”, followed by a panel discussion on the future of space and ocean exploration with:

  • Philippe Cousteau, Jr, CNN correspondent and EarthEcho International co-founder
  • Will Pomerantz, vice president for special projects at Virgin Galactic
  • Kevin Lieber, host of YouTube channel Vsauce
  • Leo Camacho, head of outreach for Google Lunar XPRIZE

Guests will also enjoy music from KCRW DJ Eric J. Lawrence, as well as an open bar, games, and opportunity to mingle and meet the panelists and other Los Angeles innovators.

SANTA MONICA, CA (FEBRUARY 26, 2014) LA-based public radio station KCRW will call the Spotify House home during a series of live broadcasts from the 2014 SXSW Music Conference.

Music Director Jason Bentley and DJ Anne Litt will be bringing the best of the fest to our international audience, sharing their favorite band discoveries as well as live recordings from official showcases.

Tune in during KCRW’s signature music show Morning Becomes Eclectic on Thursday, March 13 and Friday, March 14 from 9am to noon PT, as well as Saturday, March 15 from noon to 3pm PT.

The Spotify House will be hosting dozens of live band performances – including KCRW favorites Phantogram, Real Estate, Warpaint, Jungle, Jetta and Hozier. See their full lineup.

RSVP is required and the House is first come, first served until it reaches capacity.

KCRW was the first U.S. radio station to take its music offerings straight from the airwaves to the Spotify platform, launching the music discovery app Music Mine in June 2012.

Music Mine continues to be one of the most popular apps on Spotify, which is now available in 55 countries. The app is available for installation from within the Spotify desktop client.

Spotify also hosts a range of continuously updated KCRW playlists – from Best New Music to top tracks from Morning Becomes Eclectic.

KCRW is also proud to return as the radio sponsor for Filter Magazine’s Showdown at Cedar Street showcases, from 1 to 6pm (CT) Thursday through Saturday. Featured artists include London Grammar, Gardens and Villa, and James Supercave. The showcases are open to the public, with preferences to SXSW badgeholders. RSVP will be open soon and make sure to arrive early for entry.

Last week, KCRW announced a full day of official music showcases on Wednesday, March 12, including artists Future Islands, Sam Smith, Moses Sumney, The Preatures and more. See the full lineup and stay tuned to KCRW’s dedicated SXSW page and the KCRW Music Blog for updates.

Also, KCRW will be represented on two official conference panels. DJ Marion Hodges will be discussing music discovery on Thursday, March 13 at 12:30pm CT while DJ and Eclectic24 curator Chris Douridas will chime in on “Can Altruism Be the New Business Model?” on Friday March 14 from 2-3p CT.

SANTA MONICA, CA (FEBRUARY 20, 2014)Los Angeles-based public radio station KCRW is kicking off SXSW on Wednesday, March 12, with TWO official showcases open to anyone with a festival badge or wristband (no RSVP needed).

All of the bands appearing on the lineup have exciting new music, released recently or forthcoming, that is getting KCRW airplay and will be a big part of our programming in the year ahead.

KCRW takes over the Radio Day Stage at the Austin Convention Center, which has some of the best sound in the city, from 2-5pm.

We’ll have a set from stunning singer Moses Sumney, an LA artist who has already been included on a handful of “Artist to Watch” lists this year and is destined for stardom.

Also on the lineup, The Preatures, an awesome Aussie band with an incredible stage presence, and husband-wife duo Tennis, who have perfected their brand of sweet pop with a dash of R&B. They’ve spent some time in the studio with The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney and are hitting the road with Haim in Spring.

On Wednesday night, we return to Haven for a night of KCRW favorites, including the SXSW debut of Baltimore trio Future Islands, whose new album “Singles” is out on March 25.

They’re joined by 21-year old UK singer Sam Smith, the first and only male winner of the esteemed BRITs Critic’s Choice Award as well as BBC Sound of 2014 prize, who is currently prepping his highly anticipated debut.

Texas-bred duo Jamestown Revival blend back-porch rock with a little twang and Laurel Canyon harmonies that make them one of LA’s most promising bands and Brooklyn quartet Bear Hands represents the East Coast with their winning combo of rock, punk and pop.

Brighton trio KINS offer wistful guitar pop sounds, while the young British lads in Glass Animals, under the guidance of super producer Paul Epworth (Adele/Foster the People), have crafted a dreamy, synthy, surreal set of songs worthy of attention.
