Metropolis Back By Popular Demand – Starting This Saturday

Metropolis Returns to KCRW
Saturday nights – 10pm to Midnight
Hosted by Jason Bentley

Bentley brings back the show that launched the electronic dance music revolution in Los Angeles in the early 90’s.

Metropolis will air Saturday nights from 10pm to midnight, starting FEBRUARY 23

KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley is relaunching his groundbreaking exploration of electronic dance music, Metropolis, as a weekly show from 10pm to midnight on Saturdays starting February 23. The accompanying website will be a destination for fans to find exclusive mixes, playlists, interviews, and more with some of the top names in the genre.

Bentley, one of the most respected figures in EDM, both as a DJ and an industry leader, currently serves as host of the LA public radio station’s signature show Morning Becomes Eclectic.

“People always tell me they miss Metropolis, so we decided to bring it back in the perfect time slot – Saturday night. It’s a new chapter for Metropolis and you can expect the best new music, classic tracks and guest mixes each week,” said Bentley.

As a daily nighttime show in the 90’s, Metropolis gained a dedicated following and, like other trailblazing KCRW shows airing in an age before internet streaming, fans would tape the show on cassettes and share them with their friends, even sending them around the world. KCRW’s current focus on making our unique content available in the digital realm will now take the show to the next level.

“While the EDM movement was taking shape in the 2000’s, Jason ushered in a new way to translate that intoxicating club feeling into nighttime radio in LA. Metropolis, as solely a radio program, became a magnet for those intrigued by driving beats and finding out what was happening across the globe,” said KCRW General Manager Jennifer Ferro. “Now we are in a unique position to take that a step further and become an online gathering place for this community, with fantastic, exclusive content and Jason’s forward-thinking vision.”

The online home for MetropolisKCRW.com/metropolis — will feature exclusive content like a series of short documentaries tracing the roots and surveying the evolution of electronic music. As part of the Electrospective series produced by EMI, Jason hosts interviews with an array of artists like Paul Oakenfold, Crystal Method, Boys Noize, Mute Records Founder Daniel Miller, Photek, MIike Snow, and Deadmau5.

Tune in on February 23 for the inaugural episode and find show archives, exclusive mixes, and much more on KCRW.com/Metropolis. Read an exclusive interview with Jason, at LA Weekly’s West Coast Sound.

About Jason Bentley: As music director for LA NPR-affiliate KCRW, Jason oversees all music initiatives for one of the most influential radio stations in the country. While his roots are firmly in the underground, Jason now hosts KCRW’s signature weekday radio program, Morning Becomes Eclectic. Widely respected as a live DJ, he has performed at major music festivals everywhere from Ibiza and Australia to Los Angeles’ own Coachella. Jason was instrumental in the creation of a new Grammy category to recognize the “Best Dance/Electronic Album” and hosted the inaugural EDMbiz Conference last year, held in conjunction with Electric Daisy Carnival. He is also a distinguished music supervisor whose credits include TRON: Legacy with Daft Punk and The Matrix trilogy.

KCRW’s programming for the Festival will feature emerging composers, singer-songwriters and beat-makers and will focus on celebrating the role of music in movies. KCRW DJs and music supervisors Jason Bentley and Anne Litt will co-host live radio broadcasts from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. PT on Saturday, January 19 and Sunday, January 20 at the Acura studio space inside the Park City Museum with luminaries in both the film and music world. Public radio station KCRW (89.9FM and KCRW.com) will be presenting the First Fridays series at the Natural History Museum for the 4th year in a row in 2013.

The museum is celebrating its 100th year anniversary this year and the after-hours music and educational events series is one of the highlights of their programming.

Starting in January, the museum doors stay open until 10pm once a month and it’s packed with music lovers of all ages eager to see some of today’s best up and coming buzz bands. There are also discussions from scientists on the cutting edge of their fields and curatorial tours starting at 5pm.

Advance tickets go on sale on November 30 (Natural History Museum members) and December 3 (Public) at 10am. There are always a limited number of tickets available at the door. (details below).

Lord Huron will kick off the series on January 4, 2013. They are one of Jason Bentley’s favorite bands of the moment and have been getting regular spins on Morning Becomes Eclectic. He says Lord Huron’s captivating debut “Lonesome Dreams”, full of gorgeous harmonies, lush melodies and evocative lyrics, “takes you on an imaginary road trip down PCH.” Local trio Wildcat! Wildcat! will open the show with a set of indie electro pop.

Justin Gage, the celebrated blogger behind Aquarium Drunkard and the Autumn Tone record label, will DJ in the African Mammal Hall.

Of course, it’s not all about the music. The festivities begin at 5 pm, with curatorial tours and a discussion.

First Fridays 2013 celebrates the NHM’s 100-year birthday bash with the theme “100 Back, 100 Forward”, taking a look at the greatest discoveries of the past 100 years in physics, astronomy, biology, chemistry, medicine, and technology – and what we can expect in the next 100.

KCRW is thrilled to announce two exciting additions to the DJ lineup for Masquerade: post-punk legend John Lydon and LA-based French artist M83, aka Anthony Gonzalez.

They join KCRW’s own talented spinners – including Music Director Jason Bentley, Anne Litt, Raul Campos, Liza Richardson, Mathieu Schreyer, and Valida – as well as turntable wizard Z-Trip.

The annual Halloween benefit on Saturday, October 27, 2012 will also include performances by garage-rock phenom Hanni El Khatib, funky beatmaster Mexican Institute of Sound, and Venice-based roots collective The Dustbowl Revival.

From Bentley:

John Lydon is one of the great icons of rock, and I’m thrilled to have him play what will surely be a unique and uncompromising DJ set for the costumed revelers at Masquerade. I’ve been playing the music of M83 mastermind Anthony Gonzalez for quite some time. He’s having a blockbuster year and this is a gesture to thank KCRW for all the early support.”

Lydon is currently touring North America with Public Image Ltd in support of their new album THIS IS PIL.

Advance tickets ($85) are almost sold out. A limited number will be available at the door, however, KCRW is now offering a VIP experience with private cabanas in the largest of the Park Plaza’s five themed rooms. Find out more info here.

The haunted halls and ballrooms of the legendary venue will also host a ghost story salon, photo booths, the interactive antics of vaudeville circus troupe Lucent Dossier and five frighteningly delicious artisan food trucks: The Border Grill Truck, Let’s Be Frank, Organic Oasis, Crepes Bonaparte and Perk Up

The event is 21 and over and proceeds support KCRW.
