EXPRESS PRESS CHECK IN**

SANTA MONICA, CA (August 1, 2014)The final concert in the Country in the City series takes place THIS Saturday, August 2 with one of the biggest names in modern country music, Wynonna Judd.

Performing as Wynonna & The Big Noise, the five-time Grammy winner closes the trio of free, all ages shows brought to you by KCRW and the Annenberg Foundation to celebrate their 25th anniversary and the Annenberg Space for Photography’s “Country: Portraits of an American Sound” exhibit. She’ll follow the show with an appearance at Dodger Stadium singing the national anthem on Sunday.

Opening the show is rising Nashville chanteuse Nikki Lane. Her recent album “All Or Nothin’” was produced by The Black Keys’ frontman Dan Auerbach and has garnered critical acclaim.

In describing her sound, Rolling Stone said…“If Kris Kristofferson and Loretta Lynn had a baby; raised her on Motown, Lesley Gore, and The Clash; then let her join an all-girl hotrod gang at 15 (not that she would have asked permission.)…”

She also performs live on Morning Becomes Eclectic this Thursday, July 31, followed by her television debut on Conan two days after the concert.

Doors open at 5pm with a DJ set from Gary Calamar and live music begins at 7pm. Early arrival is encouraged to ensure entry as the event is free with RSVP.

The shows feature an array of food selections, including eight popular food trucks and local cafes, multiple beer gardens, late night museum hours, a photo booth and even some lessons in lassoing!

Country in the City Continues with Shelby Lynne and Jamestown Revival THIS Saturday

Country in the City Continues with
Shelby Lynne and Jamestown Revival
Saturday, July 26
at Century Park, Century City

SANTA MONICA, CA (July 23, 2014)Country in the City kicked off this weekend with stellar sets from soon-to-be star Sturgill Simpson and legend Gregg Allman. The series, brought to you by the Annenberg Foundation and KCRW, continues this coming Saturday with two station favorites based here on the West Coast: Shelby Lynne and Jamestown Revival.

Doors open at 5pm with a DJ set from Chris Douridas and live music begins at 7pm. Early arrival is encouraged to ensure entry as the event is free with RSVP.

Born in Virginia and raised in Alabama, Shelby took up residence in Palm Springs some years ago, but has lost none of her Southern charm or the raw and honest songwriting that made her famous.  She’s currently in the studio working on new songs and will take a break from recording to bring her fantastic live show to us, with a full band.

The duo behind Jamestown RevivalJonathan Clay and Zach Chance –grew up together in Texas before landing in LA.  They made their U.S. radio debut on KCRW this year and have been a consistent favorite on our airwaves ever since, thanks to their impeccable harmonies and inspired storytelling.

With a couple major festivals (Bonnaroo, Hangout Fest) and a national headlining tour under their belt, the band returns triumphant and ready to rock Century Park.

These FREE (with RSVP!) all-ages outdoor concerts are inspired by the Annenberg Space for Photography’s newest exhibit, Country: Portraits of an American Sound, which features images of the pioneers, poets and icons of country music.

Aside from great music, Country in the City also features an array of food selections, including eight popular food trucks and local cafes, multiple beer gardens, late night museum hours, photo booths and even some lessons in lassoing!

Attendees are encouraged to pack a picnic, bring a blanket and enjoy an
evening of music under the stars.

Also, mark your calendars for Saturday, August 2, when Wynonna & The Big Noise and Nikki Lane take the stage.

KCRW and the Annenberg Foundation first united in 2012 for a string of hugely successful summer music events staged in Century Park to accompany the “Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History 1955 – Presentexhibit.

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Annenberg Foundation has planned community events throughout 2014, including Country in the City.

See the Rising Stars of Country in LA — Sturgill Simpson, Nikki Lane, Jamestown Revival

KCRW is Proud to Announce
COUNTRY IN THE CITY

Featuring three of the hottest up and comers in the genre
alongside headliners Gregg Allman, Shelby Lynne and Wynonna & The Big Noise

 Saturdays
July 19 * July 26 * August 2

SANTA MONICA, CA (July 10, 2014) This summer, KCRW and the Annenberg Foundation are bringing country to the city, with a series of three, free concerts at Century Park in Century City.

With headliners that need no introduction, each show is defined by its opening act; three unique artists that represent the most compelling talents emerging from country music at the moment.

The Country in the City series, created in partnership with the Annenberg Foundation, seeks to shine a light on new voices in the genre carrying the torch for a true American sound.

The concerts, inspired by the exhibit Country: Portraits of an American Sound, are free with RSVP and all details can be found here.

JULY 19
GREGG ALLMAN
Sturgill Simpson

Sturgill Simpson
specializes in traditional outlaw country music. Often compared to Waylon Jennings for his conversational singing style and genuine approach, and counting his son Shooter among his fans, Sturgill is a rising star and critic’s favorite.

The Washington Post says he’s released the best album of 2014 (“Metamodern Sounds in Country Music”) so far and he’s on Rolling Stone’s list of 25 Must-See Acts in 2014. He will be making his network television debut on The Late Show With David Letterman just days before joins Gregg Allman to kick off the Country in the City series on July 19.

JULY 26
SHELBY LYNNE
Jamestown Revival

LA’s Jamestown Revival made their U.S. radio debut on KCRW this year and have been a consistent favorite on our airwaves ever since. On their debut full length, Texas natives Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance caught our ear with impeccable harmonies. They merge the sounds of the South with classic American, and Western rock, and draw inspiration from artists like Neil Young. With a couple major festivals under their belt (Bonnaroo, Hangout Fest), the band will return to LA triumphant after a national headlining tour.

AUGUST 2
WYNONNA & THE BIG NOISE
Nikki Lane

Nashville’s Nikki Lane has a fiery spirit, and an unmistakeable sense of style. She’s feisty and unafraid to assert herself in music or life, fitting in well with the strong women in the country canon who have come before her, from rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson to Loretta Lynn.

Earlier this year, we named Nikki as an artist to watch, before we knew that she was recording her sophomore album with Black Key’s Dan Auerbach on board as producer. It’s a rousing collection of song, presented with a fearless attitude and Southern swagger.

The concerts will take place at Century Park, adjacent to the Annenberg Space for Photography. The Photography Space will stay open late on these evenings (until 10pm) so that the public may enjoy both the concerts and the exhibit, which features images of the pioneers, poets and icons of country music.

There will also be food and refreshments available for purchase from a wide variety of cafes and food trucks that can be enjoyed on the grassy lawn beneath the two shimmering Century Plaza Towers designed by Minoru Yamasaki. There will also be a beer garden for those 21 and over to enjoy.

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Annenberg Foundation has planned community events throughout 2014, including Country in the City.

MADE IN L.A. MUSIC
at the HAMMER MUSEUM
THURSDAYS IN JULY

KCRW partners with the Hammer for four free summer shows starting JULY 10, with live band performances and DJ sets celebrating some of LA’s most enduring club nights, residences and music scenes

SANTA MONICA, CA (June 26, 2014) — KCRW’s free outdoor concert series Summer Nights is in full swing and July brings the return of Made in L.A. Music at the Hammer Museum, a celebration of the wide array of music created in our city.

This year’s collaboration will focus on some of LA’s most enduring club nights, residences and music scenes, from the House sounds of DEEP (with guests Marques Wyatt and Doc Martin) and the multi-cultural celebration of Afro Funke to local labels Community Records and Innovative Leisure.

These events, which are free and open to the public, are inspired by Made in L.A. 2014, the Hammer’s biennial exhibition featuring emerging and under-recognized LA artists.

Happy hour, with a cash bar, starts at 6:30pm. Music begins at 7:30pm and the museum will have extended hours during the series for guests to enjoy art in the galleries and music in the courtyard.

“I picked four distinct LA music stories to reflect our thriving metropolis and, with the backdrop of the spectacular Hammer Museum courtyard, this will be an unforgettable event series as part of KCRW’s Summer Nights,” said KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley.

Kicking off the series on July 10, one of LA’s most beloved weekend daytime dance parties, the Do-Over, heads to the Hammer with a roster of mystery DJs that are sure to rock the dance floor. KCRW DJ Mathieu Schreyer will be on the decks to start the evening and station favorite De Lux will do a live set.  (Fun fact: the Do-Over recently traveled to Brazil for a party during the World Cup!)

DJ Liza Richardson kicks off a night with local label Community Music on July 17. The label launched the giant success of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and frontman Alex Ebert will host a night of local artists signed to the label, including a project from actress Jena Malone called The Shoe, crash, and surprise guests.

“It is an honor to present our local Community Music artists with KCRW.  I grew up in LA with KCRW as a daily nutrition.  Their legendary support of local artists has long been a vital conduit to the culture of music in Los Angeles,” said Ebert.

Free concerts inspired by the Annenberg Space for Photography’s latest exhibit, Country: Portraits of an American Sound

KCRW is pleased to announce the lineup for Country in the City, a free, all ages concert series inspired by Country: Portraits of an American Sound, held at Century Park in Century City.

RSVP is required for entry. No tickets are needed. However, registered guests must collect wristbands upon arrival at check in to gain access to concerts.  Admission is free. Advance registration at KCRW.com is required for every show. (link to kcrw.com/country once live. Screenshot of website attached)

Gregg Allman, who is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee as a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, headlines the first evening on July 19. Named one of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time” by Rolling Stone, Allman recently released “All My Friends: Celebrating the Songs & Voice of Gregg Allman,” a live album that include guest performances by many of his contemporaries such as Trace Adkins, Jackson Browne, Martina McBride, Vince Gill, John Hiatt, Widespread Panic and many more.

Opening the evening will be Nashville’s latest buzz-worthy artist, Sturgill Simpson. A throwback to the honky-tonk days of love ballads and outlaw life, Simpson’s latest release, Metamodern Sounds In Country Music has seen high praise from major outlets and is headed for a big year.

Alabama native, Grammy winner and longtime KCRW favorite Shelby Lynne brings a full band on July 26.  Lynne has been making music since she was 7 years old, inspired by the songs of George Jones, Dottie West and Waylon Jennings. She’s a candid songwriter and heart-wrenching performer who always shines on stage.

Jamestown Revival opens the July 26 show. They are one of the most promising bands in Los Angeles and their debut, dedicated to their move west from Texas, has been an Americana favorite this year.  Expect impeccable harmonies with a good dose of “back porch-style” storytelling.

Wynonna is one of the biggest names in modern country music, whether performing alongside her mother as one half of the legendary duo The Judds, or pushing the boundaries on her own mega-successful solo path. The five-time Grammy winner has sold over 30 million albums worldwide, charted 20 #1 hits and received over 60 industry awards. The iconic performer was once dubbed by Rolling Stone as “the greatest female country singer since Patsy Cline.”  We’re thrilled Wynonna & The Big Noise will perform on August 2.

Opening this show is Nikki Lane, whose sophomore album “All Or Nothin – produced by The Black Keyssinger/guitarist Dan Auerbach — is out now on New West Records. She’s widely considered one of the most compelling talents emerging from country music at the moment. With a fearless attitude and Southern swagger, she’ll present a rousing collection of songs that spans genres and eras.

The concerts will take place in the park adjacent to the Annenberg Space for Photography. The Photography Space will stay open late on these evenings (until 10pm) so that the public may enjoy both the concerts and the exhibit, which features images of the pioneers, poets and icons of country music.

There will also be food and refreshments available for purchase from a wide variety of cafes and the food trucks that can be enjoyed on the grassy lawn beneath the two shimmering Century Plaza Towers designed by Minoru Yamasaki. There will also be a beer gardens for those 21 and over to enjoy.

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Annenberg Foundation has planned community events throughout 2014, including Country in the City.

KCRW Launches Summer Nights Series in Old Pasadena with WATERS on June 7

With an undeniable ear for a pop hook and high energy performances, WATERS (a new project from Port O’Brien’s Van Pierszalowski) is poised to be one of the West Coast’s big break out bands this year.

The first single “Got to My Head” is already a KCRW favorite and we’re thrilled to announce the band will be kicking off the public radio station’s Summer Nights series with a performance at One Colorado in Old  Pasadena on Saturday, June 7.

The evening begins at 7:30pm with a DJ set from Dan Wilcox.

(Previously scheduled artist Lo-Fang cancelled due to other tour date conflicts.)

One Colorado spans a city block in Old Pasadena, between Colorado Boulevard, Union, Delacey and Fair Oaks. Make Music Pasadena (presented by KCRW) will be taking place down the street, so early arrival is encouraged!

KCRW returns to One Colorado on June 21 with a performance from orchestral pop outfit Kan Wakan and DJ Marion Hodges on the decks.

KCRW was an early supporter of Kan Wakan – so early, they went by a different name at the time – and we’re thrilled to present their lush, artfully created, noir-kissed sound.

Their full-length debut, “Moving On”, comes out on Verve on June 3.

Summer Nights
returns for a fifth year, with more than 30 free, outdoor, all ages concerts that are open to the public.

KCRW Announces Lineup for the 5th Season of Summer Nights!

The 5th Season of KCRW’s Free Concert Series
Summer Nights
Begins on June 7 in Old Pasadena

The public radio station’s signature outdoor event series has already brought over 100 shows to all ages audiences across the city.

View the full lineup + details here
www.kcrw.com/summernights

LOS ANGELES, CA (May 19, 2014) — KCRW is celebrating the 5th anniversary of its free, all ages, outdoor concert series, Summer Nights, starting June 7 at One Colorado in Old Pasadena with classically-trained electro pop musician Lo-Fang, an LA artist whose been getting national attention since Lorde hand-selected him to open her first US headlining tour.

Once again, KCRW is partnering with a number of distinguished cultural organizations we love – The Hammer Museum, The Annenberg Space for Photography, and Grand Performances – and reaching neighborhoods across Southern California, including Pasadena, Chinatown, and Santa Monica.

The station’s signature series has reached hundreds of thousands of music fans over the years and given KCRW DJs a chance to bring their eclectic musical tastes out of our basement studios and into the community.

“We’re committed to serving the community throughout the year with exciting music programs that are open to the public. Summer Nights continues to be a way to thank our listeners for their support. See you there,” said Music Director Jason Bentley.

We kick off the series with two courtyard concerts amidst the historic buildings of One Colorado in Old Pasadena. DJ Dan Wilcox will spin a set of tunes and host Lo-Fang on Saturday, June 7 during Make Music Pasadena, while DJ Marion Hodges welcomes the cinematic orchestral pop sounds of Kan Wakan on Saturday, June 21. Both evenings begin at 7:30pm.

We bring the party straight to the center of Chinatown for three Saturdays (June 14, July 12, August 9), with KCRW DJs like Raul Campos, Anthony Valadez, Jason Bentley and Travis Holcombe rockin’ the dancefloor for thousands of revelers underneath showers of confetti. It’s a true celebration of one of LA’s most unique neighborhoods.

We join Grand Performances for nine events in one of the city’s most breathtaking outdoor venues, California Plaza, in the heart of Downtown LA, featuring Angelique Kidjo, Yuna, Carmen Rizzo, DJ Numark & Mark de Clive-Lowe, and more.

We team up with the Hammer Museum for the “Made in L.A.” music series, with a focus on some of LA’s most enduring club nights, residences and music scenes, from the House sounds of DEEP (with guests Marques Wyatt and Doc Martin) to the multi-cultural celebration of Afro Funke and local label Community Records, with special guest Alex Ebert. KCRW shines a spotlight on these corners of the LA music community for four Thursdays with live band performances and DJ sets in the Hammer courtyard.

Last but not least – and closest to our home base – KCRW will present the Twilight Concert Series at the Santa Monica Pier, with shows every Thursday from July 10 to September 11.  Talent announcement coming soon.

LOS ANGELES, CA (May 13, 2014) —KCRW
returns to Century Park in Century City this summer for FREE all-ages outdoor concerts inspired by the Annenberg Space for Photography’s newest exhibit, Country: Portraits of an American Sound.

On the grassy lawn beneath the two shimmering Century Plaza towers designed by Minoru Yamasaki, take in a vista of architectural delight and some incredible live music this summer.

Talent will be announced soon.

In the meantime, mark your calendars for July 26 and August 2.

RSVP will be required. Details to follow once talent is announced. Find out more here.

The Photography Space will stay open late on these evenings so that the public may enjoy both the concerts and the exhibit, which features images of the pioneers, poets and icons of country music.

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Annenberg Foundation has planned community events throughout 2014, including Country in the City.

KCRW and the Annenberg Foundation first united in 2012 for a string of hugely successful summer music events staged in the outdoor park adjacent to the Photography Space in 2012. The packed shows proved the outdoor park  was a unique and exciting weekend destination for live music and we’re thrilled to bring back more of our favorite artists for another round!
