MOBY TO JUDGE KCRW’S 5TH ANNUAL GOOD FOOD PIE CONTEST
KCRW Announces First Round of Guest Judges, a Baking Benefit with Sherry Yard, and the #PieBeer Naming Competition Winner
(SANTA MONICA) July 31, 2013 — KCRW welcomes award-winning musician, Moby to be the official judge of the “Vegan” category at the 5th Annual Good Food Pie Contest. Moby, well known for his active stance in the vegan community, joins a star-studded cast of bakers, chefs, restaurateurs, and critics, who will each judge one-of-seven categories at this year’s competition. The first round of judges includes: Russ Parsons, Roxana Jullapat, Karen Hatfield, Valerie Gordon, Zoe Nathan, Shannon Swindle, David LeFevre and Kris Morningstar.
To help raise money for the contest, renowned baker Sherry Yard will join forces with KCRW Good Food host Evan Kleiman as they share their perfect pie secrets. The special pie fundraiser, hosted by the New School of Cooking, includes demonstrations with both bakers, a pie tasting, a recipe packet, and an essential pie tool for attendees. Kleiman will create a Chicken Pot Pie, while Yard sweetens the deal with a Plum & Blackberry Pie with Toasted Almost Crumble and her Quintessential Apple Pie. Tickets are $85 and all proceeds will be donated to KCRW’s 5th Annual Good Food Pie Contest.
Orange County craft brewers, The Bruery, helped kick off this year’s pie festivities with a special Pie Beer naming competition. Over 200 entries were submitted in four days to name the sour beer inspired by a rhubarb raspberry pie with a graham cracker crust. Evan Kleiman and The Bruery chose the winning name, Windowsill, which was submitted by food and beer bloggers, Hot Knives. The special brew will be available for limited release at the beginning of September through The Bruery’s Reserve Society and at KCRW’s Good Food Pie Contest.
KCRW celebrates all things pie every summer, with their Pie-A-Day series which features a new pie recipe on the Good Food Blog daily through Labor Day. The site will also include pie announcements, baking tips, pie pictures and more. Fans can also submit their own pie photos which will be aggregated on the blog using the hashtag #PieADay.
