Santa Monica, CA (June 12, 2017) – KCRW is pleased to announce the successful completion of its $48 million Capital Campaign, launched in 2013 to build brand new, state-of-the-art broadcast studios and invest in programming and technology. KCRW is a non-profit, multi-platform public media organization which features an eclectic mix of music, NPR news, and cultural programming in Southern California and around the world.

Thanks to the generosity of over 5,800 individual donors and institutional supporters, KCRW marks the end of its largest-ever Capital Campaign by exceeding the $48 million goal and raising $50.4 million. The Campaign includes a $28 million contribution from Santa Monica College, licensee of KCRW, with funding from Bond Measure AA, approved by Santa Monica and Malibu voters in 2008.

Construction of the new 35,000-square-foot KCRW Media Center, located on Santa Monica College’s Center for Media and Design, will be completed in the coming months.

More than 5,800 donors joined Santa Monica College and KCRW’s Board of Directors in contributing to the Capital Campaign through a variety of fundraising initiatives, including two “Above and Beyond” Pledge Drives in 2015 and 2016.  Supporters were invited to place their names on microphones in KCRW’s studios and on bricks lining the courtyard of the new campus.

“Starting as a small campus-based radio station that incubated over thirty years ago in the basement of Santa Monica College’s cafeteria, KCRW steps boldly into the light ‘above ground’ to move into its new home at the SMC Center for Media and Design,” said Dr. Kathryn E. Jeffery, Santa Monica College Superintendent and President.  “We look forward to KCRW being an active part of creating a vibrant learning environment with hands-on experience for students passionate about journalism, new media, and radio in this new state-of-the-art facility.”

“This support marks our transformation from a radio station housed in a basement into a true community institution. It means so much to have the investment of Santa Monica College, the many foundations, thousands of individuals, the generosity of KCRW Foundation Board Members and public and private entities that supported this campaign,” KCRW President Jennifer Ferro said.

The Campaign, co-chaired by KCRW Board Chair Michael Fleming and KCRW Board Member Deborah Ramo, provided the funds to purchase broadcast and digital equipment for the KCRW Media Center, and to acquire new stations in Santa Barbara (88.7 FM) and San Luis Obispo (101.3 FM).  Donated support also includes more than $11 million to invest in new programming and technology to distribute KCRW’s content throughout Los Angeles and around the world.

Major private sector gifts received for the Capital Campaign included $5 million from the Annenberg Foundation and $1 million from both the David Bohnett Foundation and the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation.

“LA has always been a radio town, a community of deeply engaged listeners who expect the very best news and culture throughout their day,” said Wallis Annenberg, Chairman of the Board, President and CEO of the Annenberg Foundation, KCRW’s largest private donor. “Even here, KCRW stands out as a rare and shining gem—with smart, cutting-edge programming that informs, inspires, and brings us closer together.  That’s why I’m so pleased that we could do our part to move KCRW out of the basement, and into the kind of world-class facilities it deserves.”

Major donors to the Capital Campaign include The Ahmanson Foundation, the Annenberg Foundation, Borzi Family Foundation, Norris and Debra Bishton Foundation, David Bohnett Foundation, The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation, Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, Chris A. Hollinger and Elizabeth MacDonald, W.M. Keck Foundation, Kayne Foundation, Ric & Suzanne Kayne and Jenni, Maggie & Saree, The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, Rosemary Kraemer Raitt Foundation, Roth Family Foundation, Santa Barbara Foundation, Monica J. Shilling, Ellie and Tom Wertheimer, Lucy Wild and Jason Wolff, and Kristin and Jeff Worthe.

To raise support for the Capital Campaign, KCRW also published “From The Basement,” a limited edition book of photography that memorializes the many artists featured on the station’s flagship music show “Morning Becomes Eclectic,” which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.

Over the past 35 years, KCRW’s staff has grown from 14 to 125 people working in five locations, including extremely cramped offices and studios in the Santa Monica College cafeteria basement. The new KCRW Media Center is designed to preserve the station’s collaborative culture, while creating community gathering spaces, integrating state-of-the-art production facilities, and allowing for future growth. Designed by Clive Wilkinson Architects, a global leader in workplace innovation, the new building will also meet LEED Silver Certification standards, maximizing energy and water efficiency, and indoor environmental quality.

With a history of bringing unique live experiences to Southern California and around the country, KCRW will, for the first time in its history, be able to host the community at its own 1,400 square-foot Annenberg Performance Studio. KCRW will also have the opportunity to program events for up to 1,500 people in the 18,000-square-foot courtyard and outdoor stage and a 180-seat auditorium.

SMC’s Center for Media and Design is located in the middle of Santa Monica’s creative business district, and two-blocks from the Expo Line. The campus will include a newly-remodeled 50,000 square-foot teaching facility, a new 30,000 square-foot addition with TV and production studios, a cafe, and a new 430-space parking garage. Construction is projected for completion by end of 2017, with both the KCRW Media Center and SMC Center for Media and Design operating from the new buildings by late 2017.

Matt Kline is Named Chairman of the Board for the
KCRW Foundation

New KCRW Board Officers include
Lee Rierson as Vice Chair and

Emily Gold Mears as Secretary/Treasurer

(Santa Monica, CA—June 6, 2017) Attorney, university lecturer, and public servant Matt Kline will take the helm as Chairman of the Board of the KCRW Foundation effective June 5, 2017. The announcement was made following the organization’s Board meeting by current Chairman Michael Fleming, who will remain on the Board for another three-year term. New KCRW Board Officers include Lee Rierson as Vice Chair and Emily Gold Mears as Secretary/Treasurer. Monday’s meeting also marked the election of two new Board members: Cisco Pinedo, founder of Cisco Home, an L.A.-based home furnishings manufacturing company; and Heather Mingst, philanthropist and community volunteer.

“I am delighted that Matt Kline will lead KCRW into its next chapter,” said Fleming. “KCRW is much more than just a radio station – we are a true community hub for news, music, arts, and culture. The diversity you hear on the air is a reflection of the very conscious ‘behind the scenes’ efforts to make sure that we truly represent our community. On behalf of our Board, KCRW President Jennifer Ferro, and the entire staff, we welcome Matt and look forward to building on the momentum created over the past years.”

“I’ve been a devoted fan of KCRW my whole adult life,” said Kline. “The privilege to chair the KCRW Foundation Board and to work with my talented fellow Board members, the terrific innovators on the KCRW team, and the great leadership of Santa Monica College, is a deep and humbling honor. KCRW and SMC – and the creativity and learning these great institutions inspire – are so vital to California’s future.”

Michael Fleming, Executive Director of the David Bohnett Foundation, has served as chairman of the KCRW Foundation’s Board for eight years. “Michael Fleming is a true gem. Polished, brilliant, and able to make everyone around him look his or her best, Michael has been a tremendous partner,” said Ferro. “He has built a powerful and engaged Board and guided our organization into a new professional realm. The Board has grown from 15 members to 27 who reflect the community we reach, and increased our contributed resources by more than 500 percent. Because of his leadership, KCRW can mark its first significant Capital Campaign as a success, raising more than goal. I’m so glad he will be on hand as we open our brand new, state-of-the-art broadcast studios later this year.”

Phoenix Perform Live on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic the day they release their new album, Ti Amo

Phoenix Perform Live on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic the day they release their new album, Ti Amo

Session will be streamed on Facebook Live

Tomorrow, Friday, June 9, at 11:15 a.m. PDT

Grammy-winning band Phoenix are set to perform live on KCRW’s flagship music program Morning Becomes Eclectic tomorrow, June 9, the day they release their new album, Ti Amo (Loyaute/Glassnote Records). A longtime KCRW favorite, the band – comprised of Thomas Mars (vocals), Laurent Brancowitz (guitar), Christian Mazzalai (guitar), and Deck D’Arcy (bass) will perform a selection of tracks from Ti Amo as well as a few fan favorites.

The session will be streamed via Facebook Live at 11:15 a.m. PDT.

Ti Amo is Phoenix’s first album since 2013’s critically lauded Bankrupt!. Produced by the band and recorded at La Gaîté Lyrique (Paris) with the help of long time collaborator Pierrick Devin, Ti Amo is – in the band’s own words – “an album about simple pure emotions: love, desire, lust and innocence, it’s also a record about our European, Latin roots, a fantasized version of Italy: a lost paradise made of eternal Roman summers (hyper-light, hyper-clarity, pistachio gelato), juke-boxes on the beach, Monica Vitti and Marcello Mastroiani, fearless desire and Antique marble statues.” The New York Times deems Ti Amo, “the band’s most unabashedly romantic record yet.”

Phoenix are currently in the midst of a world tour in support of Ti Amo. The U.S. leg culminates on Thursday, June 15, at the iconic Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, CA with support from The Lemon Twigs, and Mac DeMarco.

Morning Becomes Eclectic, hosted by KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley, is the station’s signature daily music program (9:00 AM – Noon) featuring new releases from emerging and established artists, underappreciated gems, live performances and interviews.

Both showcases are open to anyone with a festival badge or wristband (no RSVP required).

KCRW will also be broadcasting LIVE from Austin, TX on Friday, March 18 during Morning Becomes Eclectic, and Saturday, March 19 during Anne Litt’s program. Additional details to come!

KCRW is proud to present the first-ever nighttime showcase at a brand-new venue, 3TEN at Austin City Limits Live. As the newest extension of the Austin City Limits live experience, the 350-person capacity showcase room is equipped with the most advanced audio and lighting systems available to deliver a live music experience like no other.

The showcase kicks off at 8pm and features six of KCRW’s favorite artists:

KCRW welcomes back Ra Ra Riot – a Morning Becomes Eclectic favorite and a live force to be reckoned with. They return in support of their just-released fourth album, Need Your Light, which gets back to their house party roots without abandoning the more heady soundscapes they explored with 2013’s Beta Love. The opening track “Water,” which starts off with a syncopated groove and minimalist instrumentation before gradually building into a triumphant, 90’s soul call to arms, has been on constant rotation on KCRW since its release.

London-born Eliot Sumner has music in her blood and a sound that is very much her own. She recently released her debut album, Information, and has lent her lush vocals to Miike Snow and Trentemoller. Her songs marry haunting low-register vocals and upbeat electro-pop with Krautrock-inspired inflections, showing a range of influences from the Bad Seeds to bands like Cluster, Faust and iconic German electronica four-piece Kraftwerk.

The Parisian duo Joon Moon features Julien Decoret, a producer with connections to the Nouvelle Vague camp, and Krystle Warren, a smoky-voiced singer from Kansas City. Together they have enchanted listeners with their debut EP, Chess, and captured KCRW’s attention with the infectious track “Help Me.”

Australian newcomer Kaity Dunstan, who performs under the name Cloves, has an incredible voice that makes you stop and pay attention. The stunning, heartfelt and haunting minimalism displayed on her debut EP harkens back to the vocal greats of yesteryear, which is made even more remarkable by the fact that she is still in her teens.

Twenty-five year old Marlon Williams truly inhabits his material live and on record with his exceptionally versatile and evocative voice, tremendous stage presence, and songwriting that blends Americana with first wave rock ’n roll through a modern lens. Ever since his father turned him on to country music in his teens, his trajectory has been straight up. Williams just won Best Male Solo Artist and Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the New Zealand Music Awards for his remarkably assured and diverse eponymous debut album.

Sofi Tukker’s weirdly wonderful pop single “Drinkee” has been a favorite on KCRW’s airwaves for months. The New York duo has just finished their debut EP titled, Soft Animals. Having created a truly unique sound blending global instrumentation with modern technology (while sounding anything but machine-made) nobody can seem to agree what box to put them in… and that suits them just fine.

KCRW Showcase at SXSW at the Radio Day Stage from 3:00 pm to 6:00 features White Denim, Declan McKenna and Lapsley. The Radio Day Stage is located on the 4th Floor of the Austin Convention Center in Ballroom D.

White Denim has long been a KCRW favorite, in large part due to their incredible live shows. The Austin quintet will perform tracks from their soon-to-be released sixth record, Stiff, out March 25, 2016 via Downtown/Sony Red. Stiff is a return to the band’s frenetic rock roots, and is both a jubilant thrill ride and joyous celebration of their past ten years. Teeming with a cool ‘70s undertow, tumultuous riffs, and a feverish energy, the new album has resulted in arguably some of their biggest and brawniest White Denim songs to date.

KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley did a little digging for new music on Soundcloud over his holiday break and a track, “Falling Short,” by Liverpool artist Lapsley emerged as his favorite. The track, which combines minimalist electronica with soulful vocals, leads her 4-song Understudy EP, and now she is set to release her self-produced debut Long Way Home on March 4, 2016 on XL Recordings. At only 19 years old, it’s the perfect time to catch this rising star, while she’s on her way up.

17-year-old Declan McKenna has achieved more than your average teenager. He’s been booking his own gigs for three years, whilst recording songs in his bedroom. He also won the Glastonbury Emerging Talent contest & secured a performance at the festival last summer. He’s currently on the road in the UK and France supporting Lisbon, Foals and Mystery Jets. McKenna’s SXSW performances will be among the first-ever in the U.S.

FIRST-EVER PUBLIC MEDIA COMPANY TO LAUNCH DEDICATED VIRTUAL REALITY APP

http://www.kcrw.com/vr

Santa Monica, CA (Jan. 20, 2016) – Today, Los Angeles-based public radio station KCRW announced the launch of their free Virtual Reality mobile app. Designed to work with KCRW Cardboard (a branded version of Google Cardboard), the KCRW VR app gives fans a unique opportunity to join a live session from the station’s legendary basement studio, by putting viewers inside intimate performances. The KCRW VR app launches with exclusive videos from artists including, Death Cab for Cutie, Brandi Carlile, Thundercat, and Purity Ring. KCRW is the first-ever public media entity and radio station to launch a dedicated VR app, and with its in-house production team, will continue to provide exclusive content throughout the year.

Built by hand in the basement of KCRW’s Santa Monica studio, the custom video rig features eight GoPro cameras that allow each artist’s performance to be captured in stereoscopic 3D (Virtual Reality) to create a 360º panoramic video. Footage is then stitched together to create an immersive, stereoscopic 3D VR experience that puts the user inside the session.

“Now for the first time, you can be in our studio with the artists. It’s a revolutionary change in the way KCRW curated artists and music can be discovered. We are always striving for creative ways to connect with our community and we’re so excited to try out this new technology together,” commented Jennifer Ferro, KCRW president.

Performances are captured during artist’s in-studio sessions for Morning Becomes Eclectic, the station’s flagship music program.

Artists and songs available at launch include:

●               Death Cab for Cutie – “The Ghosts of Beverly Drive”

●               Brandi Carlile – “Murder in the City”

●               Thundercat – “Them Changes”

●               Purity Ring – “Stranger Than Earth”

“VR is undoubtedly the next frontier for blockbuster entertainment. While the biggest studios in Hollywood develop content for the masses, KCRW can amplify the outstanding live sessions that take place on a regular basis at the station, and offer a uniquely immersive experience to the audience,” said KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley. “This exciting initiative matches KCRW curated music and art with exciting new technologies and partnerships for wider distribution.”

Additional performances will be captured throughout the year, with video from Penguin Prison, Mew, Gardens and Villa, Amason, Mr. Pauer, Shana Halligan, Natalia Lafourcade, Korey Dane and Langhorne Slim, slated for release in the upcoming months. KCRW Unveils Multi-Year Documentary and Reporting Series on L.A.’s Vulnerable Populations

KCRW Unveils Multi-Year Documentary and Reporting Series on L.A.’s Vulnerable Populations

Series Supported by a Generous Grant from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation

Inaugural Series “Below the Ten: Stories of South LA” features intimate stories about people who reside in neighborhoods south of the 10 Freeway, including Watts, Jefferson Park, and Compton

Grace of the Sea, the moving story of a gay, undocumented immigrant residing in Jefferson Park premieres August 28, at 7:30 PM on KCRW’s UnFictional

KCRW announced today a new multi-year documentary and reporting series on issues affecting the lives of Los Angeles residents who find themselves at the edges of our community. The series, supported by a generous grant from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, will explore Los Angeles’ most vulnerable populations.

The inaugural series “Below the Ten: Stories of South LA” focuses on the neighborhoods south of the 10 Freeway, including Watts, Jefferson Park, and Compton. Produced by David Weinberg, “Below the Ten” explores personal stories of residents in Los Angeles neighborhoods once associated with African-American disenfranchisement, gangster rap, crime and civil unrest. Today, however, the vast majority of South L.A.’s population is Latino, and some of these historically neglected neighborhoods are seeing more corporate investment as well as some of the biggest residential development projects in Southern California. “Below the Ten” explores these changing communities through intimate, personal stories of those who reside there.

Many of the people highlighted in “Below the Ten” are poor – some are undocumented, some lack basic shelter, safety and opportunities to get ahead. Weinberg comments, “it’s about elevating people who often get reduced to very simple narratives about ‘struggle’ and ‘bootstraps’. I’m interested in getting as close as possible to trying to learn about how their lives are affected by the circumstances that exist for many in L.A.”

The stories are produced documentary style, with the audio premiering on KCRW’s airwaves with complementary video features available online. Weinberg spent weeks and sometimes months with the people in these communities. “A lot comes out during the hanging out time that you wouldn’t know to ask in an interview. Serendipity happens more when you put in the time,” Weinberg says. “The web of personal connections becomes more apparent. It starts to feel more like a small town.”

“Below the Ten: Stories of South LA” a multi-chapter series will be unveiled over the course of eight months. The introductory chapter, “The New Compton” tells the story of the changing face of Compton. The premiere of Chapter 2 “Grace of the Sea” will air on August 28 at 7:30 PM on KCRW’s UnFictional. Luis Jesus Gutierrez Sanchez, who calls himself “Grace of the Sea,” has been living in a garage in South L.A. for six years. He’s pasted pictures of celebrities cut out from magazines to the walls and written poetry on them in pink chalk. It’s his own magical world tucked away in Jefferson Park, a neighborhood just south of the 10 Freeway between Crenshaw and Normandie. But, now he has to move. About the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation

The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation was created in 1944 by international business pioneer Conrad N. Hilton, who founded Hilton Hotels and left his fortune to help the world’s disadvantaged and vulnerable people. The Foundation currently conducts strategic initiatives in six priority areas: providing safe water, ending chronic homelessness, preventing substance use, helping children affected by HIV and AIDS, supporting transition-age youth in foster care, and extending Conrad Hilton’s support for the work of Catholic Sisters. In addition, following selection by an independent international jury, the Foundation annually awards the $1.5 million Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize to a nonprofit organization doing extraordinary work to reduce human suffering. From its inception, the Foundation has awarded more than $1 billion in grants, distributing $100 million in the U.S. and around the world in 2014. KCRW Announces $1 Million Grant from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation

KCRW to Expand Coverage
of Underserved Communities in Los Angeles

with a $1 Million Grant from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation

This is the Foundation’s First Large Grant to Public Media

SANTA MONICA, CA (January 20, 2015)—The Los Angeles-based Conrad N. Hilton Foundation awarded Southern California’s acclaimed public radio station, KCRW, a $1 million grant to develop a new multi-year documentary and reporting series examining issues affecting the lives of LA’s neediest residents and underserved communities.

The Foundation’s grant will support KCRW’s news team as they take an intimate look into the lives of Angelenos and find and tell stories illustrating the challenges faced by the city’s most disadvantaged and marginalized residents.

The Hilton Foundation’s unprecedented support to KCRW will deepen our ability to tell important stories that require time, depth and analysis,” said Jennifer Ferro, President of KCRW.

“Our goal with this gift is to produce important and compelling stories that shed light on the people who find themselves at the edges of our community. This effort is a major part of the station’s ongoing expansion of original programming through our Capital Campaign.”

The Hilton Foundation’s grant comes after KCRW’s emphasis on new award-winning reporting and storytelling projects produced in-house or as part of the station’s Independent Producer Project.

“We’re pleased to partner with KCRW, because the radio station and the nonprofit team that runs it are an integral part of our local community,” said Steven M. Hilton, Chairman, President and CEO of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. “We hope our funding will allow the team to produce even more content about vulnerable populations and social issues affecting our region.”

The Hilton Foundation’s grant marks the foundation’s first grant to KCRW and their first large grant to public media.

The gift supports efforts to advance KCRW’s public service mission by expanding original programming—a key goal of the station’s $48 million Capital Campaign.

The Campaign is KCRW’s first major fundraising initiative and is designed to support the construction of a new 35,000-square-foot KCRW Media Center and investments in new programming and technology.

To date, KCRW has secured $36 million, including $28 million from Santa Monica College, licensee of KCRW, with funding from 2008 Bond Measure AA.

Other supporters of the Capital Campaign include the Annenberg Foundation, The Ahmanson Foundation, The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation, W.M. Keck Foundation, Kayne Foundation (Ric & Suzanne Kayne and Jenni, Maggie & Saree), The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation and Santa Barbara Foundation.

Presenting CARGOLAND: An In-Depth Series on LA’s Ports from KCRW

CARGOLAND

An in-depth series about the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

This is a seminal economic story for the new age, as machines move in and people move out. Hear from the people behind the gates and more.

LISTEN / LOOK

KCRW’s Cargoland series takes an intimate and unflinching look at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, taking listeners behind the gates and telling the stories of the men and women on the frontlines of international trade.

Award-winning producer Lu Olkowski (2013 Edward R. Murrow Award for As Black As We Wish To Be), spent over two years producing the 5-part series, offering insight and analysis into the most pressing issues surrounding Southern California’s waterfront.

As the ports turn to technology to stay competitive, the workers struggle to keep their jobs.

She spoke to the pilots who guide massive cargo ships into harbor, the linesmen who tie vessels to the docks, the longshoremen who load and unload the containers, and the casuals who pick up jobs whenever they can, hoping to make a life on the waterfront and riding the waves of supply and demand.

Listen to the 5-part audio series, see photos, and immerse yourself into life at the ports at KCRW.com/cargoland.

Cargoland is part of KCRW’s Independent Producer Project, a forum for supporting the work of independent radio artists.
