KCRW Strikes New Chord with The Organist

KCRW Strikes a New Chord with The Organist

Los Angeles Public Radio Station Partners with McSweeney’s to Launch New Podcast

KCRW has joined forces with San Francisco publishing house, McSweeney’s for another joint venture: The Organist. An experimental arts-and-culture program, the new monthly podcast features stories, interviews, reviews, comic radio dramas and more, produced by editors of the award-winning magazine, the Believer and KCRW. The inaugural episode became available the first weekend in February with new episodes available on demand, monthly throughout the year.

The scope of the podcast reflects that of the print edition of The Believer: its contributors take a thoughtful approach to pop culture, along with an irreverent attitude toward the highbrow. From philosophy to daytime TV, from poetry to martial arts, the show scrutinizes and interrogates the world with an affectionate and rigorous intelligence.

Episode One: Little Language Machine, features a variety of interviews and short stories:

  • The short-story master George Saunders talks about how riffing as a teenage benchwarmer led to the richly imagined voices of his fiction.
  • Parks and Recreation‘s Nick Offerman explains the tortured etymology of the word “podcast” (it’s a conflation of the words paw and broadcast — a radio show with claws).
  • Critic Greil Marcus considers a reissue of the first Bikini Kill EP and a new novel by Percival Everett.
  • Amber Scorah tells the story of her defection from the Jehovah’s Witnesses while working as a missionary in Shanghai.
  • Pitchfork editor Brandon Stosuy presents five five-word record reviews of excellent new guitar rock.
  • The electronic duo Matmos takes a song from their new album apart, piece by piece, revealing its brilliant, pulsating innards.
  • A new(ish) film casts a shotgun microphone as its protagonist;

Listeners can visit the website to access “Web Extras” like an extended interview with George Saunders. Find that and those here.

This is the second partnership between KCRW and McSweeney’s. The two most recently collaborated for a one-hour radio drama, “Wayne Coyne’s Human Head-Shaped Tumor,” which starred Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne. The bizarre, radio adventure in the style of Mercury Theatre’s War of the Worlds, featured the music from the Flaming Lips, Bill Callahan, Okkervil River, Eleanor Friedberger, Nico Muhly, Oneida and Ed Droste from Grizzly Bear. The special is still available to stream or download here.

KCRW Welcomes Gustavo Arellano

KCRW Welcomes Gustavo Arellano

OC Weekly Editor Joins Station in New Role

SANTA MONICA, Ca.KCRW (89.9FM and kcrw.com) is pleased to announce Gustavo Arellano as our newest weekly contributor to the station. Arellano has been a frequent guest on KCRW’s Good Food for over seven years. Now, in his new role, drawing on his work as Editor of the OC Weekly, Gustavo will offer his insight into the stories shaping Orange County.

Gustavo’s weekly feature, Orange County Line, will be heard on Monday afternoons starting December 10 at 4:44pm during KCRW’s All Things Considered.

KCRW was looking for someone who could shine a bright light on this sprawling, diverse and vitally important region of Southern California, and we are happy to have Gustavo as a guide,” says Gary Scott, news program director at KCRW. “Gustavo is smart, he’s dogged, he’s funny … and he’s occasionally outrageous — but he’s more passionate and plugged in than just about anyone you’ll ever meet.”

“Orange County is virtually virgin territory in the Southern California media landscape, and my colleagues at the OC Weekly and I have been a lone voice in the wilderness proclaiming its glories and controversies for years,” said Gustavo Arellano. “I’m thrilled that KCRW has assigned me to be their guide to this strange land, especially after having collaborated with them for years on Good Food.

KCRW and the OC Weekly also plan to hold regular events that highlight the cultural and political issues facing Orange County.

Arellano is the editor of OC Weekly, an alternative weekly newspaper in Orange County, CA, and the author of  a nationally syndicated column “¡Ask a Mexican!”, in which he answers any and all questions about America’s largest minority community. The column has a weekly circulation of over 2 million in 39 newspapers across the United States and won the 2006 and 2008 Association of Alternative Weeklies award for best column.

Gustavo is the author of two books, Orange County: A Personal History, and, most recently, Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America. He is a lecturer with the Chicana and Chicano Studies department at California State University, Fullerton.

KCRW & McSweeney’s to Debut Radio Show “Wayne Coyne’s Human Head-Shaped Tumor”

KCRW & McSweeney’s to Debut Radio Show “Wayne Coyne’s Human Head-Shaped Tumor”

Airing Live on KCRW on November 24 & 25 at 5pm PST

The one-hour radio event features new recordings from the Flaming Lips, Eleanor Friedberger, Bill Callahan, Nico Muhly and Okkervil River as well as an appearance by Ed Droste from Grizzly Bear

KCRW (89.9 FM and KCRW.com) has partnered with McSweeney’s to create a singular radio event centered around Flaming Lips’ singer Wayne Coyne and featuring original music compositions and recordings from Okkervil River, Bill Callahan, Eleanor Friedberger and the Flaming Lips themselves.

A unique radio venture from KCRW and McSweeney’s, “Wayne Coyne’s Human Head-Shaped Tumor” will air on KCRW (89.9FM and KCRW.com) on November 24 and 25 at 5pm PST and will also be available via podcast.

McSweeney’s, the San Francisco-based publishing house founded by editor and author Dave Eggers, and KCRW set out to create not just another show, but a radio adventure. Together, they commissioned Richard Parks, son of KCRW favorite Van Dyke Parks, to produce this radio hour. It’s been described as the Mercury Theatre’s “War of the Worlds,” but mixed with contemporary music and unique sound design – car crashes, helicopters, and even murmuring tumors.

Yes, it’s bizarre, but befitting one of the most creative and outlandish bands in rock music today, and that makes McSweeney’s and KCRW the perfect collaborators for this eccentric piece of experimental radio.

KCRW has always celebrated creativity. For years we’ve wanted to hear what the creative publishing world of McSweeney’s would sound like if you could listen to it. This is the first attempt and it came out strange, compelling and wonderful,” says KCRW General Manager Jennifer Ferro. “We’re thrilled to present this bountiful plate of odd curiosity and can’t wait to hear more.”

The partnership between KCRW and McSweeney’s is just getting started. The duo is in the midst of co-producing another project, The Organist, a monthly podcast to debut in December.

Wayne Coyne and the Flaming Lips have performed many times on KCRW, including their most recent appearance when they debuted their version of Pink Floyd’s epic album, “Dark Side of the Moon.”

Prepare for a true radio event this weekend, featuring the following players:

Wayne Coyne, Michelle Martin Coyne, Steven Drozd, and Scott Booker (Flaming Lips), Will Sheff (Okkervil River), Eleanor Friedberger (Fiery Furnaces), Jack Hitt (This American Life, Harper’s), Paul F. Tompkins (The Pod F. Tompkast, Thrilling Adventure Hour, Mr. Show), Bill Callahan (aka Smog), Nico Muhly (Björk, Philip Glass, Antony and the Johnsons), Fat Bobby and Kid Millions (Oneida), and Edward Droste (Grizzly Bear).

KCRW Sets Goal To Donate 150,000 Meals During Summer Pledge Drive

KCRW SETS GOAL TO DONATE 150,000 MEALS DURING SUMMER PLEDGE DRIVE

Radio Station Partners with Los Angeles Regional Food Bank for Second Time

SANTA MONICA, CA, August 16, 2012KCRW (89.9FM and KCRW.com) is pleased to announce they will again partner with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank in an effort to fight hunger in the Los Angeles community. After partnering with the organization for their Winter Pledge Drive earlier in the year, the station set an ambitious goal to donate nearly twice as many meals during their Summer Pledge Drive which begins today.

“More than 1.7 million residents of Los Angeles County are food insecure and struggling to put food on the table for themselves and their families,” said Michael Flood, President and CEO of the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. “These are people that experience the lack of food multiple times throughout the year. This may mean having to involuntarily skip meals, go hungry and for parents, forgo eating so their children have food. We are excited to join KCRW in battling this fight against hunger in our community.”

KCRW has always been an organization that makes LA a better place to live. The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank is the same,” KCRW General Manager Jennifer Ferro said. “We are so happy to offer our members the chance to give up a gift for themselves and instead provide a gift of food to people truly in need in our region.”

When KCRW first partnered with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank in January, supporters were given the option to donate meals instead of receiving a premium gift. For every $10/month donation to the station during the 9-day drive, 40 meals were in turn donated to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. KCRW was able to donate over 80,000 meals during that time.

The KCRW fall pledge drive runs through Friday, August 24. To support KCRW please visit www.kcrw.com/join.

SANTA MONICA, CA, July 19, 2012KCRW (89.9FM and KCRW.com) is pleased to announce American radio icon Joe Frank will return to KCRW to produce a special episode of UnFictional. Over the years, his work inspired millions from Ira Glass to David Sedaris and he is the recipient of many prestigious awards including an Emmy and Peabody Award. As a former producer at the station for sixteen years, Frank created several radio programs beginning with Joe Frank: Work In Progress.

“I’m excited to be returning to KCRW as a part of the outstanding public radio series UnFictional. During the last few months I’ve become a fan and look forward to each engaging, diverse and illuminating broadcast,” says Joe Frank.

Known for his ability to engage others through storytelling, Frank is an ideal fit for the UnFictional series. His monologues and radio dramas are known to be philosophical, often times funny and sometimes dark. ‘Dreamers’, the title of his upcoming episode, embraces all of these elements as it addresses questions regarding time and mortality.

‘Dreamers’ includes stories about a family’s tragic visit to Palestine, a man who attends a dinner party after learning he might be dying, and a contemplation of different perspectives on time,” explains Frank.

“I’m thrilled to be able to present new work from Joe Frank on my program UnFictional. Joe is one of the true public radio pioneers and without his incredible work, programs like mine wouldn’t exist,” says UnFictional Producer Bob Carlson. “Frank’s early programs introduced me to the power and possibilities of modern radio storytelling. Listening to one of his stories is a mesmerizing and disorienting experience. If you’ve never heard one before, you’re in for a trip.”

The episode will air LIVE this Friday at 7:30pm PST on 89.9 FM (in Southern California) or www.kcrw.com and again on Tuesday, July 24 at 2:30pm. Part radio, part video, part mapping project, Sonic Trace asks ¿Por qué te vas? ¿Por qué te quedas? ¿Por qué regresas? Why do you go? Why do you stay? And, what makes you return?

“We are honored and excited to win a competition with which I have such an intimate personal connection,” says Hugo Martinez, co-founder of MAT-TER Design + Build Studio. “I come from that background. I am an immigrant. I came from Mexico at a very early age. I do have a history to tell, and it became something very personal that not only expresses what I went through but what my entire family went through.”

One of 30 entries, La Burbuja was submitted by Hugo Martinez and Christin To, co-founders of MAT-TER Design + Build Studio. The sound booth, which will travel all over Los Angeles, resembles a silvery orb that would open up in sections like a chocolate orange to reveal a womb-like recording space inside. The concept was for a “non-place”, in which the interviewee would be suspended in time and space, while bystanders would see themselves reflected in a globe both dematerialized and opaque.

“Eric and I were humbled by the response and the chance many designers took to dream of something more than the basic structure we originally anticipated building,” says Anayansi Diaz-Cortez, co-producer of Sonic Trace. “The Sonic Trace project is deeply personal to us, and its success will remain largely on the stories we are able to gather. La Burbuja encompasses all of the elements we were searching for: portable, practical, creative and most of all, inviting.”

La Burbuja, along with all submitted designs will be on display at the KCRW/DnA booth at this weekend’s Dwell on Design show and can also be viewed at the KCRW DnA Blog. For more information on the Sonic Trace project please visit: www.kcrw.com/sonictrace
