Gov. Jerry Brown will be delivering the keynote speech and Vice President Joe Biden will also be in attendance as officials from the U.S. and China open a two-day climate summit in Los Angeles today.
The goal of the summit is to discuss strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in transportation, power plants, buildings and other areas.
The summit follows an historic agreement between President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping to cut emission in the two countries. The U.S. and China are the biggest greenhouse gas emitters in the world.
L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti and other U.S. mayors, governors and Chinese provincial officials are joining the talks. This past weekend, some of those officials reportedly agreed on a framework for speeding up the timeline to reach the goals set by Obama and Jinping.
The summit comes as California suffers through the fourth year of a drought that some scientists say has been worsened by the effects of climate change. Meanwhile, Northern California is dealing with a spate of fast-spreading and immensely damaging wildfires. Gov. Brown and others say Californians can expect fire conditions in the state to worsen if nothing is done to check an anticipated rise in global temperatures.
If that’s not enough, a new study finds that the Sierra snowpack this past winter was at its lowest level in 500 years.
