Get your spandex, swim cap and favorite pump up song ready. The Santa Barbara Triathlon kicks off this weekend. It’s one of the longest running triathlons in the world, but as new, alternative events like Spartan Race and Tough Mudder continue to reshape the competitive racing world, traditional triathlons are exploring new ways to, well, stay competitive. To hear what’s new this year, KCRW’s Jonathan Bastian sat down with the Joe Coito, the Santa Barbara Triathlon’s race director.

According to Coito, the best place to watch the race is at the start and finish line on Cabrillo Boulevard by East Beach.
