LA Galaxy’s Robbie Rogers on coming out as gay

LA Galaxy’s Robbie Rogers

It’s usually pretty big news when someone in the sports world comes out as gay.

More recently, we think of Michael Sam, Jason Collins, Brittney Griner, the number one draft pick last year in the WNBA, tennis stars Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova. The list goes on, but it’s not a very long one.

Playing sports and being gay has had its problems. But it’s getting better.

And one person who can empathize with athletic closet-exiting is Robbie Rogers, the midfielder-turned defenseman of the LA Galaxy, who’s written a book about his journey, titled “Coming Out to Play.”

He spoke to KCRW’s Steve Chiotakis about the pressures on and off the field that lead to his decision, and how his announcement was embraced by his family, teammates and fans.

Rogers will be discussing and signing copies of his memoir at Book Soup in West Hollywood on Monday, Dec. 15 at 7 pm.
