But one LA couple is sending their artwork to the final frontier – space.
They designed the exterior of a satellite that’s scheduled to launch from Kazakhstan at 8:58 a.m. PST on Tuesday.
Jon Gibson and Amanda White are the owners of iam8bit, a gallery in Echo Park that deals with art inspired by video games, technology and pop culture.
“We made the satellite’s exterior an all-encompassing charging station, but instead of just North American and European outlets, it features lots of intergalactic outlets as well, so aliens visiting the planet can charge their laser beams, their cell phones, their laptops,” Gibson said.
Scottish space company ClydeSpace reached out to the couple to commission artwork for the UKube-1 satellite, which is about the size of a loaf of bread.
“Space is probably the largest canvas an artist could ask for, and we feel pretty honored and special to be included in such an amazing project,” White said.
The artwork is etched in metal into the side of the satellite. It’s scheduled to orbit the Earth for 25 years.
