Courts faulted for not keeping guns from mentally ill

Many courts in California fail to report the mentally ill to justice officials, undermining efforts to take guns away from potentially dangerous owners. State law requires that courts tell the Justice Department when they make certain mental health determinations. That can put people on a list prohibiting them from buying firearms .But a new state audit finds that many courts are not aware of the reporting requirements. The courts collectively failed to report at least 2,300 mental health determinations over a three-year period…L.A. School Superintendent John Deasy is staying put. In a surprise move, the L.A. School Board extended Deasy’s contract for two years. Deasy – who has a strained relationship with the teacher’s union and some board members – had hinted that he was ready to bolt. The decision to keep Deasy as the head of the nation’s second largest school district came after a five-hour closed door meeting to review his job performance…LARIVER L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti wrapped up his first official trip to Washington, D.C. with a push for a $1 billion L.A. revitalization plan. Garcetti wants the most comprehensive – and most expensive – of four river plans being considered by the Army Corps of Engineers. The Army Corps has given tentative backing to a less expensive plan. The agency is expected to make its final recommendation to Congress next spring…A federal appeals court has thrown out the conviction of a man who was sentenced to life in prison for killing his estranged wife and an off-duty L.A. County Sheriff’s deputy. In a unanimous ruling, the three-judge panel said detectives failed to administer a complete Miranda warning to Reuben Lujan when he was arrested for the 1998 killings. The state has not said if it will appeal…The Clippers are supposed to be one of the best teams in the NBA this year, and the Lakers, well, not so much. But last night in the season opener for both teams at Staples Center it was the no-name Lakers (Xavier Henry?) who came out on top.
