Huell Howser at the KCRW Pie Contest
A Tennessee native, Huell Howser became an icon of public television here in Southern California, traveling to every corner of the state in search of interesting people and hidden stories. His easy going “oh my gosh!” attitude made him a beloved fixture of local television. Howser died Sunday at age 67, according to reports, just weeks after he retired.
According to his website, he “had a simple idea: if he traveled the state with an open heart and an open mind, a microphone and a camera, he would uncover a treasure of California stories.”
KCRW’s Steve Chiotakis spoke to Howser’s longtime cameraman, Luis Fuerte; historian and writer D.J. Waldie; and Chapman University’s Sheryl Bourgeois, and has this remembrance:

Howser also spent some time at KCRW when he recorded his “Guest DJ Project,” choosing favorites that included Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, and Tammy Wynette. He was also kind enough to pose with KCRW staff (pictures here), and he judged KCRW’s annual Good Food Pie Contest. He will be missed by many (below is a map of the many places he visited).

Growing up in Southern California, Huell Howser was one of those constants that I found myself drifting back to every once in a while… a touchstone. The glowing, positive light that he pointed in SO many directions will be missed sorely.
Huell was an amazing spirit and lovely person. I only had the chance to meet him once and I was
definitely beside myself. He is truly CALIFORNIA GOLD!
Wow – truly inspiring gentleman. RIP.
One of my favorite weird little episodes of California's Gold — of so many weird little episodes, hard to call any one a favorite — was "Teardrops". I'm feelin' it today. And speaking of California's Gold…there's a fitting epitaph in there.
I hate to tell you, KCET, but Huell Howser is the main reason I am still a member.
I first heard Huell's inimitable oh-my-gosh and enthusiasm on morning drivetime newstalk radio.
When "Videolog" appeared, I felt he had taken up the Ralph Story banner. Since I had lived in LA for years by then, but still felt like a tourist, Huell's interests always sparked mine. Already Videolog is an historical log, and some early California episodes show places that are going or gone. No one thinks of him as a documentarian, but he certainly was.
His love of the California desert will never be forgotten.
And I will never, never forget when he stopped a gang of looters single handed during the Rodney King riots. That was amazing, the true force of moral superiority.
Farewell, Huell.
The "real" reality; his shows exuded were in the true inspiration and warmth he brought as well as brought out, in all those he touched in his shows, and everywhere else.
It's true, in this case, the good die youmg; too youmg, for this fine gentleman.
He will be fondly remembered; in the way we all wish to be, someday.
So much fun he had. I met him a few times, once at a party in Los Angeles and he cornered me in the bedroom, with no weird intentions, he just wanted to talk to me about his dealing with The Eagles, who I had worked for, and his amazing show he did on the concert. He was so kind and personable, he sent me the video of the show for my own archives. He had great taste in all things Los Angeles, and will be so missed. Too bad he did not have more time after retirement to enjoy, but with Huell everyday was an adventure.
Huell was an inspiration to me to go out and see ALL of my home state of California. I watched his show growing up and was coincidentally watching a DVR'd episode the evening of his passing. I am saddened to hear that he's gone, but glad to have participated in the viewer experience. Thank you, Huell!
I had the honor and privilege of being a fellow judge with Huell for the Nisei Week Coronation Ball back in 1998. He was as enthusiastic as ever and made for a very wonderful and memorable evening that I will treasure forever. I've been a fan of his since the early 1980s when he first began his series at KCRW. I was sad for myself when he announced his retirement last November but devastated when I learned of his passing. He knew California like nobody else. I would always wonder about places that I'd driven past trying to figure out what they were and their significance. Sure enough, Huell would have a show about that exact same place and explain the whole thing in ways everyone could understand. I feel like we've lost the very best of California's Gold, but the World is definitely a better place because of him.
I met Huell at an event in West Hollywood sponsored by the Italian design stores. He was not there for his show, but to see what he could see. He was at a kitchen design store by himself. I just walked up and told him that my mother loved his show. In true Southern gentleman fashion he said “why do all the purty girl’s mothers love me”. We both cracked up. Being from the South I loved his style, humour and grace. I was able to help him meet Yvonne Savio who runs the Master Gardener program for his California Green short lived show. He featured her in his first show. RIP Huell.
I once wrote Huell an email, letting him know I had enjoyed an episode and that I shared his enthusiasm for small adventures in California. He personally called me back and we had a fun conversation about a number of things. He was just as nice as he appeared to be on TV. I'm very sad that he's gone.
Huell was the consummate gentleman explorer & loved discovering all the places others passed by.
He showed us all that everyone is relevant & significant in all they do and accomplish. Huell made us think twice about how the past history of California was much more than just panning for GOLD.
He showed us how all peoples in so many ways contributed to the great GOLDEN STATE.
I first met Huell at the opening night gala of the Catherine the Great exhibition at the Hammer Museum in 1990. He was fun to meet and spend time with. Much later, I ran into him at an old car show in 29 Palms. Once again, he was gracious – enough to make me think he remembered talking with me that opening night 20 years before. I loved his shows and I think the man was a true one of a kind. We'll miss you, Huell.
Echoing what dozens have already said here, and thousands are saying around this amazing state of ours…it's so sad to see him go. Huell brought together a disparate community of people who were genuine curiosity-seekers & adventurers alongside the legions of armchair viewers who were tickled by stories both large and small in scope. Always comfortable and surprised & intrigued by what he found, he showed that the fascination of so many things is worth keeping alive and taking the time to explore. How many of us have said, "gee, I wish I had HIS job!"? But no television personality was quite like Huell – who I, also, had the chance to meet in person. And as so many before me have just said, he was truly – a great guy! You'll be missed, Huell…
I happened to meet Huell after he gave a speach to gathered attendees of the California Chapter of the American Planning Association in Palm Springs in 1994. Since he lived near by, it was natural to invite him to talk to a ballroom full of city planners. His unique perspective on our profession was inspiring and funny at the same time. The attendees rolled out a birthday cake that morning for him and he was smiling from ear to ear. I will always remember his kind and open manner and his willingness to have his picture taken with me. He will truly be missed.
The Huell Howser hot dog at Pink's is one of our top sellers because people just LOVE HUELL HOWSER. Everytime Pink's does a Chili Dogs for Charity and Huell comes out, the lines are longer than for any other celebrity. Huell was a cultural phenomena because he was able to capture every day occurences and make them into special events that we should all admire. That was Huell Howser's genius! Although his show, CALIFORNIA'S GOLD, the fact is, Huell was California's Treasure! We will always LOVE AND MISS HUELL HOWSER.
We should make his birthday a state wide holiday that requires everyone to go to a place they have never been, eat something new and talk to a person they don't know.
My wife and I are still relative newbies to California, moving into L. A. at the end of 2009. Being longtime PBS supporters, we began watching all the local PBS stations, especially the flagship KCET, whose indy productions we had seen when living in other states. We soon found Huell's California's Gold, and began watching faithfully so we could learn more neat things about our adopted state. We became Huell fans, as voiced by every commenter here. We will definitely miss Huell and his wonderful programs. If KCET doesn't produce for sale a series of archival collections of those broadcasts, I shall be greatly disappointed. May his legacy continue to be broadcast and appreciated!

I love Huell and hope to meet him some day, Hopefully not too soon though. I still have a lot of places to go to, many of which he introduced me to.
What a fantastic idea! If not State wide then I am going to adopt that and do something special and talk to someone new. Thank you Tom for a wonderful idea to keep him alive in all of us.
I emailed him from my work email at ABC.com to tell him that my kids and I watched him every night during dinner and took notes on where he had been and then we went to many of those places. All times we dropped his name as to why we were there and were always warmly greeted. He called me at my office, I had to conference in my co-worker as she was also a fan, and he wanted to know all about TV ratings and why is there so much cussing and nudity. We talked for 20 minutes and at the end in his humble persona asked me if it would be to presumptuous of him to send my 2 kids an autographed picture of himself. I was over joyed and 5 days later we got 2 – 8×10 glossy signed photos that were quickly framed and hung on the wall. It is a huge loss and I will always have him in my heart on my California travels and I will be now more conscience of speaking with people to make up for what I am going to miss. Heaven's Gold.
I received a phone call one day from my son's cell phone. It seems that while retrieving some parts from the elevator service truck, a curious person called out, "Well, how you doin?" My son sure enough knew that voice. After hearing how an elevator is built, he replied, "Why that's fascinatin!" When I answered my cell phone that morning, I instantly knew that voice as well. I told him of some of my favorite episodes and 3 weeks later a package showed up with those very episodes. I can't think of a more open and generous spirit than that of California's Huell Howser.
After moving here some almost 20 years ago, like many others, I used his show as California Cliff Notes. It was like an accelerated learning program for all those special places and CA offerings that only the lifelong residents could possibly know about. It took a transplant like him to do it for the rest of us. He was a state treasure and he should get a special day on the calendar. RIP Huell

Like many good people, we took him and his genuine open spirit for granted, and this makes it even more sad to have lost him too soon. He had a heart of gold as well, donated all his archives to Chapman College in Orange and requested the archives be free. At least you'll be able to watch past episodes online.

Oh, yeah, I've been to Stan's Donuts in Westwood. All because of Mr. Huell Howser. Sure, I'm a foodie, but watch Mr. Howser's interview with Stan–there's just something so down-to-earth and quirky and cool about the whole interchange. There'll never be another one of a kind treasure like him.
Huell Howser was himself one of California's treasures. I would swear that during the 1992 Los Angeles riots following the acquittal of the LAPD officers involved in the Rodney King beating, I heard his unmistakable voice during NPR coverage. Howser was out in his neighborhood chasing looters away. I don't remember if he was identified in this news coverage, but it was obviously him. No one else sounds like that. Does anyone else remember this?

I do know the Buick e-book was reprinted in I think the late 90s ( I had been the merchandise manager in the area BCA chapter and experienced ordered a bunch for members ) and the Chevrolet book was originally 60 Ages of Chevrolet and updated to 75 Many years of Chevrolet. I believe the Ford e book was also updated ( my copy is 90 ages of Ford ).
