For the first time since the era of school reform began, the Los Angeles Unified School District has accepted a petition from angry parents demanding “immediate and significant” change in a public school. Kids at 24th Street Elementary score just 30 percent in reading and 35 percent in Math. Elsewhere, the “parent trigger” has provoked much bitterness among parents and confrontations in court. When parents in Compton tried out the so-called “parent trigger,” their petition was thrown out in court. But two weeks ago, the school board in the high-desert town of Adelanto turned over control of Desert Trails Elementary to an outside operator. Last week, a crowd of parents from 24th Street Elementary in South LA showed up to demand immediate, significant change from LA Unified. Listen below:
