The last edition of the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner rolled off the presses on November 2, 1989. Yet the defunct newspaper’s final employee has been standing guard ever since.

Chuck Lutz is the 68-year-old building supervisor of the Herald-Examiner’s former downtown headquarters. But tomorrow, Jan. 9, is his last day on the job. He told KCRW’s Steve Chiotakis what he’s been up to these past 23 years.

“They never told me not to come in,” Lutz said. “They had things for me to do.”

Lutz said he’s seen movie stars come and go: Clint Eastwood, Sandra Bullock, Arnold Schwarzenegger. “I just sit here and watch the property,” Lutz said.
