“California’s Gold” is winding down production and its host Huell Howser will retire at the end of the year. The show, a PBS and KCET staple here in California, has sent Howser from Coachella to the Redwoods looking for people and places worth talking to. The Tennessee native became a California TV icon and is known for his small crew and easy going nature (he even got a spot on The Simpsons). There have been rumors of illness, but Howser’s assistant said this wasn’t behind the retirement, telling The L.A. Times that he ”is just trying to get away from television and enjoy some free time.” (Although you will be able to watch reruns).
There are so, so, so many clips of Howser to watch. Do you have a favorite? Maybe this one on Eagle Rock?
News of his retirement prompted kind words from fans on Twitter. Like this:
Golly, I’ll miss Huell Howser. When he reunited Charlie the trainer w/Nita the elephant I shed pachyderm-size tears bit.ly/WuieVS
