You might see some familiar faces among the athletes competing in the London Olympics. About 15 percent of the US Olympic Team comes from Southern California, even though our region accounts for 7 percent of the U.S. population as a whole. In fact, if Southern California was a nation, it would be fifth in total medals as of this writing. KCRW’s Matt Holzman went to find out: is it something in the water?
Matt talked to lots of Southern California Olympians this past week. And he felt obliged to ask what their favorite memory was of going to the games? Winning a big race, standing on the podium, or perhaps the excitement of competing alongside, or against, world-class athletes from around the globe? No, almost without exception, it was something else.
