Longtime producer Howard Koch, known as “Hawk,” has been named the new president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The organization presents the Oscars and promotes film education and awareness. Koch will give up his current position as president of the Producers Guild of America.

He replaces Tom Sherak, who reached his term limit after three years as president of the Academy.

Koch’s producer credits include “Losing Isaiah” and “Gorky Park.” His father, producer and director Howard W. Koch, served as president of the Academy from 1977-79.

KCRW’s Steve Chiotakis spoke with Hawk Koch about his new role, increasing diversity among the Academy voting pool, and how to spice up the Oscars ceremony.
