If you think the beach is crowded now, just wait. By a six point margin, Americans have a more favorable opinion about an ocean vacation than a mountain vacation, according to a new ABC News/Washington Post poll. Seventy-two percent of poll participants said a beach vacation was favorable, while 66 percent had a favorable opinion about a trip to the mountains.
Gender played a role in why the results skew toward an ocean-side summer. According to the poll, women were 11 points more likely to favor a beach vacation, while men found both options equally favorable. The poll results revealed that age, region and having kids were some of the other variables at play.
But perhaps most importantly, the poll found that there’s at least one issue Republicans and Democrats can agree on this election season, even if it’s as trivial as sand castles and sunbathing. The poll found common ground among partisans, with 75 percent of Democrats and Republicans reporting favorable opinions about taking a trip to the beach.
Independents, however, were six points more likely to favor a trip to the mountains. So if you were looking for a break from 2012 election jabber on your next trip to Sequoia or Yosemite, think again. You never know when a campaign truck might roll up looking to persuade some undecided voters.
