My bike (Gary’s) parked outside Swingers Diner with one of the new bike racks. Credit Gary Kavanagh
Gary Kavanagh, well known in the cycling world here in So Cal, wrote a great piece about protecting your bike from being stolen. Santa Monica has been installing new bike racks and Gary has some tips.

It was only a couple months ago that I was lamenting the lack of bike racks at many locations around town, particularly parts of Santa Monica outside the downtown region.
I am happy to report that this is quickly being …

Bicycles – Road Rules – Traffic Safety in Santa Monica- Gary Kavanagh

Rules to follow!
If you follow and are a regular reader of Shortcuts you know I post  a lot about bicycles and the difficulties  cyclists  have negotiating a safe ride. A colleague of mine here at KCRW, thank you Steve, turned me onto a great piece written by Gary Kavanagh. I could write on and on about it but I think hearing from the cyclists, volunteers, dodge ball players, walkers and more will convey the experience in a way I never could. I’ve compiled a handful of tweets, comments and videos from Twitter and various websites. A much better way to transmit that miraculous day in Los Angeles on Sunday …

I got a call at the station last week from a mom (and KCRW subscriber, thank you so much!) about a really cool event taking place this Wednesday. Bike It! Day. Ultimately I spoke to Jenna Perelman, the daughter, a junior at Santa Monica High School and Co- President of Samohi Solar Alliance. I was so impressed with the passion and commitment that she and the others have for our planet. To …

They have a  bike pocket guide (one in English and another in Spanish) that they encourage you to read that includes bike rules and laws. Mostly basic stuff, but take a look – there are a couple of things that were …
