Our friend Maggi Michel, she’s a part of the Santa Monica Ciclovia Group, informed me that tonight on the Santa Monica City Council agenda-CICLOVIA! Here is how Maggi explains it…

Santa Monica Ciclovia Santa Monica plans to clear the way for cyclists and friends to experience the freedom of the road and the city’s bike paths on a portion of Main Street one day this Fall. For a few hours, cars will be re-routed so people of all ages on wheels and on foot can travel at human speed, enjoying contact with each other and the usual denizens of Main Street on a Sunday morning. Beyond the Farmer’s Market, special attractions such as merchant participation, bike shop and bike clubs booths, cycling and safety instruction for kids, and entertainment are all in planning stages.
The voices of Santa Monica’s many cyclists, combined with City officials’ ongoing dedication to improving traffic flow and decreasing environmental impact, have driven citizens and the Parks & Recreation Bike Committee (in the person of Commissioner Richard McKinnon) to develop Santa Monica’s first Ciclovia, inspired by similar events all over the world. McKinnon says, “We’ve got great support from local cyclists and local organizations such as the Ocean Park Association, whose success at hosting the annual July 4th parade on Main Street demonstrates that this kind of event can work in their neighborhood. We’re dedicated to bringing to life, for one beautiful morning, the benefits of getting out of our cars and meeting face to face.”
