What a treat! KCRW’s David Kleinbart got much more that he bargained for when he and his wife went to Santa Anita for the horse races! David writes…
Fab Fairlanes… boss Bel-Airs… magnificent Mercs…
As I write this, Weekend Edition Sunday’s Liane Hansen is playing a clip from Commander Cody’s “Hot Rod Lincoln.” How fitting!
Connie and I joined some friends at Santa Anita last Sunday, unaware that all the usual horse power would be augmented by a show featuring horsepower of a different kind. I brought my camera, hoping to get shots of winning picks as they headed down the home stretch. Instead, I spent most of my time shooting these cool cars. (They shoot horsepower, don’t they?)
What a kick, seeing 200 or so fully restored cars from a time before unleaded fuel. (Is it true you have to add lead to get them to run on today’s gasoline?) Most were stock , with original colors and trim. But, many were painted in modern metal flake and candy colors, with custom upholstered interiors and tricked out suspensions that set them at ground level.
Didn’t find a ’55 Pontiac – my first car – but did see many Chevys from the era that resembled it. Do I wish I still had that Poncho? Not really. But, it was fun seeing what I might be able to do with it, given a major investment in time and money.
Oh… and we did manage to place a few winning bets, actually leaving with a few dollars more than when we’d arrived. Not nearly enough to restore a ’55 Pontiac, though.
