Friday, October 31st – Check-In
Your tour starts at the lovely ocean front Fess Parker Hilton Resort. This dramatic 24-acre, mission-style Santa Barbara resort is just a few blocks from downtown Santa Barbara and is the perfect setting to launch our trip. After checking in on Friday afternoon or evening at your hotel, enjoy exploring State Street or relaxing at one of the many restaurants located near the beach or on the pier.
Saturday, November 1st – RIDE DAY 1
Santa Barbara to Ventura
On Saturday morning, your day starts with a hearty Welcome Breakfast and pre-ride orientation. Immediately after breakfast, you head down the coastline of Santa Barbara through Montecito and Carpinteria, then turn inland towards Lake Casitas. After a picnic lunch, you follow back roads and bike paths towards the beach in Ventura, your overnight stop. Your first day of the tour is the only day with any significant climbing, and follows the route frequented by the Amgen Tour of California.
Your overnight destination is the Four Points Sheraton Ventura Harbor Resort.
Sunday, November 2nd – RIDE DAY 2
Ventura to Santa Monica
Sunday takes you along Harbor Blvd. from Ventura, past the Point Mugu Naval Air Station and through the Oxnard plain, a vast agricultural area full of ripe strawberries. Your route then picks up Highway 1, heading towards Malibu, with a lunch stop at Nicholas Canyon Beach Park. You ride past numerous beautiful beaches and into Santa Monica, where we stop for the night.
Tonight is a unique lodging experience at the Hostelling International L.A./Santa Monica one block from the Santa Monica pier, and an opportunity to explore and dine on your own.
Monday, November 3rd – RIDE DAY 3
Santa Monica to Long Beach
After breakfast at the hostel, you continue riding south along highway 1, utilizing the bike paths and surface streets towards Long Beach. You ride through Venice and Manhattan Beach. Lunch on your own is another opportunity to sample the local beach shacks and diners along the route. After regrouping at the last SAG stop, you make your way into Long Beach along more bike paths towards the Queen Mary, your destination for the evening. Today is a relatively short ride so you will have time to fully experience the Queen Mary.
Once the grandest ocean liner in the world, the Queen Mary is now a full-service Long Beach hotel, historical landmark and entertainment venue. Your evening on the Queen Mary will be an experience to remember. A dinner banquet will be held in the world-renowned Verandah Grill, originally used to accommodate royalty when on board. Tonight features some very special guests, including John Howard, a three-time Olympian, 1981 Ironman World Champion and author, and others TBA.
Tuesday, November 4th – RIDE DAY 4
Long Beach to San Clemente
On Tuesday morning, you have breakfast aboard the ship and then continue south on the Huntington Beach bike trail, inland through Irvine, and back again towards the beaches of San Clemente, your evening’s destination.
The Casablanca Inn in San Clemente offers elegant accommodations just minutes from the beach.
Wednesday, November 5th – RIDE DAY 5
San Clemente to San Diego
After a breakfast in San Clemente, you pedal south through Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base on your way to Oceanside. Your last rest stop will be on the cliffs of the Carlsbad State Beach Campground before heading south into the San Diego area for your final goodbyes.
The California Bicycle Coalition strongly encourages the use of Amtrak and other means of public transportation when planning your trip. There are Amtrak stations in both Santa Barbara and near your final destination in San Diego.
