Cars, DUI Checkpoints, LA Culture »

The number of drunk driving-related deaths dropped to a record low in California in 2010, marking the largest single-year decline in DUI fatalities in the last 14 years, a new report says.
Though the jury may still be out as to why:

Transportation officials credit the increase in DUI checkpoints for the nearly 17% reduction in alcohol-related deaths in California, and for an overall nationwide decline in such deaths.
Costa Mesa Police Chief Tom Gazsi demonstrated to councilmembers that saturation patrols are more effective in catching drunk drivers, calling checkpoints more of an …

Feds Would Ban Cell Phones, if they could…

“Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves.”
- Albert Einstein
Lisa and I were talking about what the Fed announced today. This is important – so important. Using your cell phone in the car…I know,  believe me I KNOW! I’m busy and want to use my car time as “catch up on everything else” but driving time. Especially tempting here in So Cal where sitting in bummer to bummer traffic is a daily  “eating up all my time …

Lisa Napoli’s Traffic Pet Peeve

The Pet Peeve Off continues. My colleague Lisa Napoli shares hers.
“Why is everyone rushing?  Because they just don’t know how to manage their time.  And so, they speed up, endangering the safety of everyone—and not necessarily getting where they’re going any faster. Every day, someone speeds ahead of me, often on a side street, to save, like, five seconds. (Then they’re sitting next to me at the same traffic light.) Now, I’m not a slow driver—I’m a safe driver, and I don’t get why everyone doesn’t want to be.
The ABSOLUTE worst …

LA Auto Show 2011 Photos From David

Kcrw’s David Kleinbart went to the auto show. Check it out….
New wheels to the left.  Hot Wheels to the right.   Once you’ve entered the LA Auto Show, you’re completely surrounded by all that’s new – and a few cars that aren’t so new.
There are concept cars… cars that run totally on electricity… or gas… or a combination of the two. (Seems like every manufacturer’s got a few hybrids.)  Sooner of later, you’ll see most of these cars on the streets and freeways.  But, there’s nothing like seeing them all right …
