Who knew the Natural History Museum could be sexy? I guess that’s what you get when you mix giant dinosaur bones, Little Dragon, and KCRW.
The 2011 season of First Fridays at the Natural History Museum arrived on the scene with a boom – thanks in large part to Anthony Valadez, resident DJ for this year’s series of swank-worthy get togethers. Always a mad man on the turntables, Anthony provided an impressive soundtrack amid the huge replicas …

KCRW DJs Anthony Valadez and Garth Trinidad will join Swedish band Little Dragon as the musical talent to kick off the Natural History Museum’s First Fridays series in 2011. The show, on January 7, 2011, will have one more musical act that is yet to be announced.
Little Dragon is a longtime KCRW favorite – they made their U.S. debut here and played our Halloween Ball last year—and it will be fascinating to see them create their soulful electro music in this venue.

KCRW Presented the 2010 season of First Fridays at the Museum of Natural History which wrapped up on a high note Friday after six months of incredible live performances. The event lured in thousands of young, fashionable, music savvy Angelenos to enjoy tunes among the dinosaurs, mammals and more.
The final event showcased performances by Texas-based Neon Indian, who kicked off the evening with a fizzy mixture of charisma and chaos. The brainchild of Alan Palomo, the band boasts an unpolished sound that layers electronic and raw instrumentation, …

KCRW has happily presented a fantastic monthly series of music at the Natural History Museum – First Fridays – which sadly comes to a close this Friday! But we’re going out with a bang with performances from Stones Throw Records founder Chris Manak aka Peanut Butter Wolf on the turntables. He’s produced fantastic records by Madlib, Breakestra and Quasimoto and seems to be having a lot of fun as a performer (a couple years ago he did 8 shows in 8 days at 8 different clubs!)
Opening the night is Neon …

“I would be careful because I’ve got a herd of buffalo behind me. And they say they’re ready to charge,” Swedish folk singer Kristian Mattson joked with his audience on Friday night.
But Mattson, who belts out his one-man tunes under the moniker The Tallest Man on Earth, was not totally kidding. Filling the North American Mammals Hall with his gruff yet passionate voice, he Tallest Man on Earth performed for buffalo, sea lions, white-tailed dear, and a sold-out crowd of adoring fans at …

The next event in the First Fridays series at the Natural History Museum features a night of soul and funk by two fantastic local bands. Check out Breakestra and Fitz and the Tantrums this Friday, April 2. Also, if you’re curious about the peculiar patterns of Southern California’s mountains, valleys, and coastlines, you can hear about how they were formed — one earthquake at a time — during a pre-show discussion at 6:30pm.
If you can’t make it in person, you can watch the performances live via webcast on KCRW.com …

Since Deer Tick is headlining the Natural History Museum TONIGHT, Friday, March 5 as part of KCRW Presents First Fridays, we decided to get to know a little bit more about this band from Providence, RI. Some fun facts:
*The band is founded by John Joseph McCauley II and describes their music as a “rock, country, blues, grunge, and cosmic experience.”
*John named the band Deer Tick after taking a hike in Indiana and discovering a deer tick on his scalp later that evening. He just thought it sounded cool (he likes …
