From KCRW’s Monika Scott
As far as I’m concerned, summer started this past Thursday night at The Hammer.
Last year my summer didn’t feel official until the first Also I Like to Rock concert was underway. That was partially due to the bizarrely chilly start summer had, but it was also because there is something decidedly summer-ish about sitting in the Hammer Museum’s outdoor courtyard taking …

I must admit, I was a little late to the Mad Men party. I kept hearing raves about the show from people I trust, but I just don’t watch that much TV. Then I happened upon a Mad Men marathon on a rainy Sunday and watched 5 straight episodes – I was totally hooked. It’s like a moving photo. It’s beautiful and every line …

From KCRW DJ Dan Wilcox-
As I sit here nursing my post-SXSW cold & sickness — something that happens to me every year (probably a combination of the booze, malnutrition & lack of sleep) — I realize that this annual Austin music festival takes a real toll on the body.
I’m still feeling it in my feet (from all the walking, standing and occasional stationary …

From KCRW DJ DanWilcox:
Don’t think that all the praise The Vaccines are receiving at the moment is going to go to their heads.
One of the most buzzed-about bands of 2011, the UK quartet already has the “Hottest Record In the World” nod from BBC’s Zane Lowe, an MTV Best New Band nominee, an NME cover and nearly won the 2011 Brit Critics Choice Awards …

From KCRW DJ Dan Wilcox:
Arguably the greatest cover song ever done was Aretha Franklin’s version of “Respect”. She took Otis Redding’s lover’s quarrel and transformed it into a women’s movement anthem, a generation-defining moment.
The trick to a great cover song is 1/2 creativity and 1/2 context… to filter a vision through a new lens. To take a meaningful song and give it new meaning.

Ever wonder what it might sound like if the next Bond film was scored by an cool, exotic electronic artist like Massive Attack or Bonobo?
Look no further than DC-based collective Thunderball, who have been releasing records on Thievery Corporation’s ESL Music for over a decade and have just dropped their latest full-length, “12 Mile High.”
The band continues to develop …

With a name like “Delicacies,” it’s hard to resist Simian Mobile Disco’s new album. And after I read that DJ Dan Wilcox called it an “unrelenting techno tour-de-force,” I was hooked!
The band spent most of this year creating a series of 12” singles named after exotic delicacies James Ford and Jas Shaw discovered while touring around the world and this album is …
KCRW DJ Dan Wilcox will be appearing on Fuse TV on Thursday, November 4 at 7pm PST to talk about great bands coming out of Los Angeles. He appears on a “Different Spin with Mark Hoppus” in an episode dedicated entirely to music in our city!
Among his favorites is Glasser, a gorgeous project from singer/producer Cameron Mesirow. I must confess, I am absolutely …
KCRW DJs Jeremy Sole and Tom Schnabel are writing tributes to Jamaican reggae singer Gregory Isaacs, who passed away today. In the meantime, I wanted to share this video from the movie “Rockers.” A great live performance from Mr. Isaacs. Thanks to DJ Dan Wilcox for the recommendation.
The 1978 film captures reggae culture and its peak and if you haven’t seen it — you …

Hoodie Allen cannot be denied. It’s not that he cleverly chops & samples notable indie songs on his tracks — Chiddy Bang & The Hood Internet have been doing that for years. It’s not any kind of novelty of being a white rapper (which he is). It’s not his ability to craft a catchy hook — pop music is full of catchy hooks where …
