KCRW Premiere: Oceaan Remixed by Young & Sick

Oceaan Promo for KCRW

Young & Sick aka Nick Van Hofwegen made a big impression on us at SXSW with his electronic soul and now he’s taken on one of our favorite tracks of the moment, “Veritas” by Manchester-via-Brussels producer Oceaan.
He strips back some of the original’s layers of sound for a more simple approach that somehow manages to give the song MORE impact. I love what he’s …

Desert Sound Colony: Artist You Should Know

Posted December 3, 2014 by | 0 Comments | 831 views]
desertsoundcolony

Back in October, without warning or much accompanying information, Brooklyn-based House label, run by Francis Harris and Anthony Collins, Scissor & Thread released a stunning 4 track EP by Desert Sound Colony.
Moody, downtempo grooves that occupy a new space between chill-out electronica and swirling indie psych rock.
“The Way I Began“ EP is immediately familiar but doesn’t quite sound exactly like anything else. The closest …

Psychemagik’s COSMIC CODE Mix

Posted November 20, 2014 by | 0 Comments | 1,111 views]
psychemagik cosmicc

The rad dudes of Psychemagik collaborated with video artist Ari Russo for a one-off, live improvised performance  at The Ace Hotel’s Miranda Bar in Shoreditch, called “Cosmic Code.”
Diving into their unbelievably deep stacks of records and VHS tapes and laserdiscs, Psychemagik mined thousands of sources for tracks, clips and samples to create a unique soundtrack which they played over a gnarly collection of found footage, manipulated by Russo.
The result by all accounts was a decidely …

It’s a Wonderful Life – Joakim Shares His in a New Video

Posted November 5, 2014 by | 0 Comments | 938 views]
joakim2

Earlier this year, Joakim released a fantastic album called Tropics of Love. It’s a truly spectacular album from a truly spectacular artist.
One of the highlights of the album is an autobiographical jam called “This is My Life” that traces (with heartbreaking sincerity) epic and sometimes mundane life-changing moments in Joakim’s life.
After an instrumental bridge, he plaintively asks the listener, “This is my life. What will you do with it?” and it’s one …

Brassica: Artist You Should Know

BRASSICA_CIVIL_MUSIC_BY_DAN_WILTON_2000-2

Mysteriously named after the cruciferous genus of plants that give us cabbages and mustard greens, UK producer Michael Anthony Wright creates smart, emotive House as Brassica.
The classically-trained musician has spent the last few years deejaying, playing in bands, performing with the London Sinfonetta, remixing a slew of amazing artists and creating custom software as a foundation for his original series of EPs for the Civil …

Always under the excellent curatorial tutelage of Erol Alkan, UK based record label Phantasy has been around for 7 years but has hit it’s stride in the last 3 years.
Between the rise of wavy space cowboys Connan Mockasin and Daniel Avery, banging solo work by Chemical Brother Tom Rowlands, and Alkan’s own foray into producing original work…Phantasy is doing the damn thing.
And with the recent announcement of a full length …

Ptaki: Artist You Should Know

CS549854-01A-BIG

Polish DJ/production duo Ptaki (which means birds in Polish) flew into discerning listeners radars like a full on flock sometimes registers on an air traffic controllers screen awhile back with a ripping 7″ on the Very Polish Cut-Outs label a few years back. “Krystina” is a laid back groover that by edit standards stands out as a shimmering example of what a savvy editor can do …

Suzanne Kraft’s Dude Energy

AD002_Artwork copy 2

Local producer/DJ/allaroundraddude Diego Herrera wears a grip of hats. The dublab DJ is a lynchpin in Pharoahs, produces wavy House as Suzanne Kraft and is set to release a brand new heater of a 12″ under the name Dude Energy.
The 2nd release on producer Tornado Wallace’s Animals Dancing label, Dude Energy finds Herrera flexing slightly less ambient muscle and with overtly chuggy intention. The 3 …

If you ever happen to catch my show on Saturday nights, you’re probably aware of my long-standing admiration for legendary UK DJ, half of ….Wizard’s Sleeve and Phantasy label boss Erol Alkan.
His influence on my ears is undeniable.
His penchant for looking for (and finding) the place where dreamy psychedelia and dark teeth grinding bangers meet is a next level gift and something I can only keep aspiring to do.
Although …

Sneaking in just days before the Autumnal Equinox, the La.Ga.Sta music blog has just released the fourth installment of its yearly Late Summer Compilation series, showcasing unreleased and overlooked tracks from some of the most exciting acts in electronic music and nu disco.
This year’s compilation is the best yet and I cannot recommend it enough.
