Guitarist Garba Touré comes from musical royalty as his father, Oumar Touré, played congas for Mali’s guitar legend, Ali Farka Touré.
Garba fled Northern Mali when Islamist jihadists took control of the region in 2012 and formed a band to keep the country’s music alive for the refugees.
Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs ended up producing the band’s just-released album.
SXSW SHOW SCHEDULE
Dan Deacon saved something special for his debut performance on Morning Becomes Eclectic, the live premiere of “When I Was Done Dying”, a standout from his most recent record “Gliss Riffer”.
It’s safe to say the album (which is excellent) is his most accessible material yet.
I’ve always thought of the Baltimore producer as a mad genius wizard and everything he said in his interview with …
KCRW’s Strictly Jazz host Bo Leibowitz honored the legacy of the late great trumpeter Clark Terry with his show this week, which you can stream below.
Terry recently passed away at the age of 94.
A St. Louis native idolized by Miles Davis (also from St. Louis), Terry’s puckish, recognizable tone could be heard in a variety of settings, including early stints with the bands of …
Helio Sequence – “Stoice Resemblance”
There’s something to be said for the 3-minute pop song. As a longtime fan of Portland-duo Helio Sequence, I’m proud to announce that their new single on Sub Pop is just that.
It’s a hit of catchy goodness with a funky bassline with a chorus of “oh na na nas.” It’s a bonafide jam.
Alice Boman – “ Be Mine” (Jaakko Eino …
Local favorites White Fence and Cherry Glazerr have been confirmed for the April edition of First Fridays at the Natural History Museum.
Cherry Glazerr are a bunch of young’uns signed to the current kings of DIY power pop and garage rock Burger Records.
Their name was inspired by KCRW’s morning news host Chery Glaser.
I’ve had a few conversations with Chery about it and she is incredibly …
Jessie Ware – “Meet Me in the Middle”
For a second weekend, Fifty Shades of Grey took the top spot at the box office.
While I have no plans to see the movie, I’m pleased it birthed a surprisingly good soundtrack, particularly this sexy song from Jessie Ware.
If by any chance you missed her last full length, this is the track you need to hear.
Seagulls – …
I’ve been a fan of Miami Horror since their 2010 debut “Illuminations”.
As a Miami native, I was immediately intrigued and the album became my exercise soundtrack for over a year (that’s a compliment, it keeps me going!).
Now, they’re back with the first single from their forthcoming full length “All Possible Futures”.
The song came seemingly out of nowhere when it popped in my inbox this …

Guest Dj Project, Uncategorized »
I had already booked Jemaine Clement to tape a Guest DJ Project set when the news came out that Flight of the Conchords would be touring in 2015 (with new material!).
Jemaine ended up choosing many of the artists that inspired the comedic duo as part of the set — including Prince, Beck and Harry Nilsson (fun fact: Bret also picked Harry in HIS Guest …
Joni Mitchell welcomed KCRW DJ Liza Richardson into her Spanish Colonial home and, with the flick of her lighter, dug into her career as a singer, including her thoughts on love songs.
The occasion was the release of “Love Has Many Faces: A Quartet, a Ballet, Waiting to Be Danced”, a four CD box set with detailed liner notes that captures the “diversity of changes …
