Week Ahead – Today’s Top Tune 11.21 – 11.25.16

An eclectic mix of songs makes up Today’s Top Tune this week. We start by exploring new work by disco king Tensnake. Don’t miss The Pretenders, currently on tour with Stevie Nicks.  Morgan Delt brings the flower power era into the 21st century.  Cotton Jones’ Michael Nau takes a casual approach on his solo work.  And if you’re aching for a taste of Appalachian folk via sitar, take a listen to Dawg Yawp.

Monday, Nov 21 Tensnake: Desire from Freundchen x Desire

Channeling the disco gods, German producer Tensnake returns to his underground disco, house roots with his latest work. We feel the heat and experience the magic on the track “Desire.”

Tuesday, Nov 22 The Pretenders: Holy Commotion from Alone

The Pretenders is back with its first new album in five years. Recorded with The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, who also produced the album at his studio in Nashville, we hear front woman Chrissie Hynde flex her rock and roll muscle on “Holy Commotion.”

Wednesday, Nov 23 Morgan Delt: I Don’t Wanna See What’s Happening Outside from Phase Zero

Artist Morgan Delt’s been catching on with KCRW DJs. He produced and recorded everything on this 10-track effort in his Topanga Canyon workshop. The home-fi recording feels soothing and experimental as exemplified by “I Don’t Wanna See What’s Happening Outside.”

Thursday, Nov 24 Dawg Yawp: Lost at Sea from their Dawg Yawp

Cincinnati’s Dawg Yawp intricately combines sitar, vintage synths and blown out guitars on its debut. Sounding much bigger than its two members, the duo captures a psychedelic swirl on “Lost At Sea.”

Friday, Nov 25 Michael Nau: title track from Love Survive

Not sure about making a solo recording, Michael Nau was just recording songs. For years, he’d been writing songs with his wife, Whitney McGraw, under the moniker Cotton Jones. Tracking ideas while on the road he stockpiled them in his Maryland compound until a whole album emerged. Here’s the title track to “Love Survive.”
