Squeeze ‘n’ Peaches ‘n’ Low ‘n’ more on MBE this week

Welcome to your weekly Morning Becomes Eclectic update, for news and performances over Nov. 16-20, 2015 on KCRW and KCRW.com.

MONDAY, November 16, Minnesota band Low recorded their 11th studio album in the Wisconsin studio owned by Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver). With warm, layered harmonies and a fair amount of fuzz, Ones and Sixes is one of their best efforts yet. We welcome them back into the studio for the first time since 2013.

Fun fact:  The husband-and-wife team Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker have always been notable for their incredible harmonies – demonstrated perfectly on our favorite song from this record –“What Part of Me,” a duet about enduring relationships.

TUESDAY November 17, South London’s purveyors of pop magic Squeeze return to our studio to share classic tracks alongside songs from their first album of original material in 17 years, Cradle to the Grave. Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook will play an acoustic set for us.

Fun fact: Cradle To The Grave is the band’s 14th studio album and will soundtrack a new sitcom of the same name based on comedian Danny Baker’s autobiography.

ALSO on Tuesday, November 17, Electro-clash artist and pop culture provocateur Peaches joins us for a Guest DJ set at 10:20am. The Canadian performer born Merrill Beth Nisker shares the musicals roots of her 15 year career and some current favorites.

Fun fact: Did you know Peaches got her name from the Nina Simone song “Four Women?”  I got a sneak peek at her Guest DJ set list and it includes everyone from Bjork and Missy Elliott to a hugely influential track from ESG, an all-female band that emerged from NYC in the ’80s.

Thursday, November 19, Real Estate frontman Martin Courtney breaks out on his own with his debut solo album, Many Moons. Inspired by time on the road, it’s a breezy record with pop sensibilities that make it an easy and enjoyable listen. KCRW DJ Anne Litt will host MBE and bring you a beautiful live session recorded at Cutting Room Studio in NYC.

Fun fact: This is not the first time Martin Courtney has gone solo. In 2011, he contributed “”Kicker of Elves” to a compilation of GBV covers titled Guided by Guided by Voices. Also, his Real Estate bandmates are hard at work on their own solo projects: Matt Mondanile makes music with Ducktails and Alex Bleeker has a new album as Alex Bleeker and the Freaks.

Fun fact: The guys started playing together in school and have been collaborating on various bands ever since, including a jazz fusion group and a funk trio! Also, their big break came when fellow Aussie Flume remixed their track “Hyperparadise.”
