Tei Shi Covers Beyonce – “No Angel”

Argentinian-born, Brooklyn-based songstress Tei Shi’s songs have been described as everything from “bedroom music” and “mermaid rock” to “future pop” and “alt-R&B”.

On her debut visit to Morning Becomes Eclectic, the singer treated us to a few tunes from her Verde EP and threw in a cover of Beyonce’s “No Angel”.

She said she was drawn to it because it was a little grittier than a lot of stuff on Beyonce’s self-titled surprise album that dropped at the end of 2014.

Then she was found out it was co-written by Caroline Polachek of fellow Brooklynites/synthpop duo Chairlift, and it all made sense.

Tei Shi (aka Valerie Teicher) didn’t aim to imitate Beyonce, but gave the R&B jam her a fresh take with her own otherworldly vocals front and center.

(Personally, I really love that she keeps the snaps)
