Guitarist Garba Touré comes from musical royalty as his father, Oumar Touré, played congas for Mali’s guitar legend, Ali Farka Touré.

Garba fled Northern Mali when Islamist jihadists took control of the region in 2012 and formed a band to keep the country’s music alive for the refugees.

Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs ended up producing the band’s just-released album.

TEI SHI

Tei Shi is the moniker of Valerie Teicher, an Argentina-born songstress who spent her early years moving frequently across Bogota, Vancouver and later Boston.

I feel like Tei Shi is picking up where Banks and Mr Little Jeans left off with their releases last year, with a combination of pop, R&B and electro. She even collaborated with their labelmates, Glass Animals.

She has a new EP out this Spring.

GOOCH PALMS

Sometimes you just need a quick hit of poppy garage rock.

Australian party rock duo Gooch Palms probably spent a lot of time listening to the Ramones and have captured that raw, frenetic energy.

From what I’ve heard so far, this show is a guaranteed good time.

DARK TIME SUNSHINE

This Seattle hip hop duo’s track “Never Cry Wolf” has a great beat, a solid vocal hook from singer Reva DeVito, AND they name check 80’s music video siren Tawny Kitaen – how could I not love this?

Onry Ozzborn of Grayskul (Rhymesayers) and producer Zavala first teamed up in 2009 and have been releasing music as Dark Time Sunshine ever since.
