Ibeyi: Artist You Should Know (SXSW Preview)

Written by

Ibeyi are Cuban-born sisters based out of Paris, France who expertly blend some of the most amazing world sounds with minimal instrumentation.

A simple percussion instrument known as the cajòn and piano layered with beautiful vocals makes for a unique sound that incorporates both English and Yoruba, which is the native language of Nigeria.

They share the music in their blood which came from their father, the late Anga Dias, who was a member of the infamous Cuban jazz band, Buena Vista Social Club.

What I personally love is their ability to connect and pay homage to their ancestry dating back to slavery, while being inspired by the likes of Frank Ocean, James Blake and Jay Electronica.

SXSW can be a crazy with all the shows, walking and exploring. Trust me when I say this might be the band to cool out and enjoy to recalibrate your soul.
