Listen to a Lost Song from Mark Duplass

Any mention of his name and I guarantee there will be a chorus of different projects he’s been involved in — The League! The Mindy Project! Tammy! – to his mumblecore roots and indie films like “Safety Not Guaranteed” and “The One I Love”, which was a Sundance favorite this year and opens in theaters soon.

BUT a lot of people don’t know that he got his start as a singer-songwriter.

In his Guest DJ Project set, he tells us he turned in his drum sticks for a guitar when he first heard Tracy Chapman (and realized he wasn’t the tough guy he was pretending to be).

He also shares that Iron & Wine (who performs at the Hollywood Bowl this Sunday) captures everything he wanted to be.

When we finished taping, I had to ask Mark to send us a song.

This is from his record “Me & Her”, which he self-released in 1999.

He sold 2500 copies out of the back of his van and never reprinted it, so it’s a bit of an exclusive! The song is called “The Clock”.

Last but not least, in his Guest DJ set, he also mentioned Shawn Colvin’s acoustic version of Talking Heads’ “This Must Be The Place (Naïve Melody)”, saying it changed the way he thought of the song.

Shawn performed it live on Morning Becomes Eclectic in 1993 (with host Chris Douridas) and we’re thrilled to share that version with you.
