Fandom: Cults on Connan Mockasin

Written by

New York duo Cults have made name for themselves with the kind of nostalgic 60s era pop music that is at once reminiscent and brand new. It’s a tough way to get noticed in a trend that can feel somewhat saturated these days, but  guitarist Brian Oblivion and singer Madeline Follin have stood out with hits like “Go Outside” off their debut and “High Road” from their 2013 release “Static“.

For our Fandom series, the two doubled down on psychedelia with a slow burner from upstarts Connan Mockasin:

“I got hooked on this record after seeing these guys play at the Mexican Summer anniversary party in Brooklyn. I showed up just in time to catch their last song “Forever Dolphin Love”.

As the song went on the band kept speeding up and speeding up, but as they were accelerating they got quieter and quieter, fading themselves out until the show ended with a hushed room and just a whisper of tapped on drums. It was a magical moment, and speaks to the kind oddball confidence and mastery that runs through all their songs. ”

Connan Mockasin plays FYF Fest here in Los Angeles, CA on August 23rd and 24th.

Cults play the First City Festival in Monterey, CA on August 23rd and 24th and the San Diego Music Thing on September 11th & 12th, followed by ACL in October.
