Ballin’ Jack — “Found A Child” (Monk One Re-Edit)
There’s a decent chance that you don’t know the ’70s jazz-rock sextet known as Ballin’ Jack, but I’d be willing to wager you’re familiar with the guitar riff from their song “Found A Child“.

It’s quite possibly the funkiest 8 second guitar loop ever committed to wax and years after its initial release, would become the foundation of the beat for Young MC’sBust A Move“.
This edit of “Found A Child” by Monk One originally came out as part of his “Monk’s Dream” mix CD released by Turntable Lab’s Money Studies imprint back in 2002. Monk One doesn’t reinvent the song so much as he rearranges the track to emphasize the best parts of his source material. It’s really just the perfect edit for a great track.

Franz Ferdinand — “Erdbeer Mund”

Franz Ferdinand’sRight Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action was one of my favorite albums of 2013 because it felt like a return to the fun, catchy feel of their eponymous debut album (one of my all-time faves). There was a certain joy and devil may care looseness to it that was infectious.
This feeling is exemplified by their bouncy new (free) offering “Erdbeer Mund“:

The first thing that you’ll notice after you get past the 80s-inspired synth work is that the Alex Kapranos is singing completely in German. It definitely caught me off guard on first listen and I have no idea what he’s talking about, but it doesn’t matter because it’s just a fun track and that’s really all that matters.
