Electric Guest – “The Bait” (Shlohmo Remix)

Electric Guest and Shlohmo operate at opposite ends of the R&B spectrum.

Where Electric Guest looks to the Motown-era for inspiration, Shlohmo’s stands at the vanguard of the bass heavy post-Timbaland future R&B sound.

On paper this is a collision doesn’t seem like it would/should work, but the end result is pretty good.

Shlohmo pitches down Electric Guest frontman Asa Taccone’s bouncy vocals to a codeine-dripped crawl and brings out a whole new meaning in the song.

Manikan – “Bout Me”

I’ve been playing this track by Atlanta-based beatsmith Manikan since the beginning of the summer and I can’t quite get enough of it. Everything from the rapper’s cadence to the sunny beat works for me. This is one of my favorite Soundcloud finds of the year.

World’s Fair – “Bastards Of The Party”

It’s no secret that I have a thing for late 90’s hip hop. Listening to last year’s 1999 mixtape by Joey Bada$$ felt like reconnecting with a long-lost friend more than anything else. It also gave me hope that the 90’s boom bap sound might be ripe for a comeback.

I don’t know anything about World’s Fair except that they’re from Queens and there are 6 members. “Sammy Sosa” seems to be the track that’s getting the most hype out there, but it was “Heathrow (Children Of The Night)” that got me hooked.

Fans of the old Fondle ‘Em and Rawkus labels should dig this one. World’s Fair’s label — Fool’s Gold — is offering this entire album, “Bastards Of The Party, for free.
