Bobby: Artist You Should Know

Written by

This blog post title is a bit of a trick because there’s a good chance you probably already know Bobby, but you know him as Robin Hannibal, the production mastermind behind Rhye and Quadron.

Bobby is his solo project, with music available exclusively on boutique label Quieres Chicle, run by KCRW’s own Mathieu Schreyer.

A few weeks ago, Jason Bentley started spinning his track “Tame the Shrew” and I’ve been bugging Mathieu ever since to let me post it on the blog. Robin just has a magic touch, and this is no different.

(Though I will admit, the first few seconds really remind me of “Let’s Hear it for the Boy” from the 80’s movie classic Footloose. NOT a bad thing)

It will only be released as a digital single for now, starting tomorrow September 6, but an EP with a few other songs will be pressed on vinyl in early 2014.

And how did this solo project come about?

Here’s a note from Mathieu:

“We’ve have been good buddies for the last 7 years now and when I started my label a couple of years back, it just made sense that we’d do stuff together. I am a huge fan of his music and i think he likes some of my ideas and appreciates my passion for the music .

We started with a collaboration between Quadron and Leon Ware, which was the first release on Quieres Chicle, and followed that with a track from newcomer named Orfeo, which Robin produced.  This is the second song release from his solo project Bobby. Check out this first, which came out last month.

I am really doing this label from the heart, trying to do it all in house with very limited resources, but that’s what makes it so interesting and exciting to me. Hope you enjoy.”
