Hot Chip is the gift that keeps on giving. Aside from frontman Alexis Taylor’s solo work, the group has given birth to side projects Booji Boy High, About Group, The 2 Bears…and the latest member of the Hot Chip family New Build.
New Build is a collaboration between Al Doyle (who was additionally in LCD Soundsystem) Felix Martin and Tom Hopkins.
Like their forebears, New Build is an excellent synthpop outfit, but where Hot Chip has Devo DNA, New Build has Human League DNA.
Although there is a spectrum of familiar sounds on their new LP “Yesterday Was Lived And Lost“, the mood leans towards the more sober side of things and is all the better for it.
“Do It All Again” is the sound of regret and compulsion in equal measure, a burning desire sound and one of most beautiful tracks I’ve heard all year.
New Build are making their LA debut this Saturday at the Echoplex as part of Britweek. Regretfully, I can’t go. But, you totally should and tell me about it.
