I own about 15 pieces of vinyl. I know – that’s a VERY NON-KCRW way to be. But I’m a digital girl, living in a digital world.

However, one of those few records is a Perfume Genius record. It was an impulse buy at Amoeba b/c I’m a Sufjan Stevens fan. I consider him a top 10 artist of all time and just about any record that lists his name as an influence will get a moment from me.

The record lands on my aesthetics first Crosley record player a lot of early evenings when I’m hanging out alone, perhaps preparing myself a solo dinner, or decompressing from a frenetic work day. It has a calm and thoughtful energy, it’s borderline wrist cutter depressing ,if you let sad music move you like that. Its a hit or miss for me, sometimes I put it on and I just giggle to myself a bit about melo-tragedy, but when it hits….. it hits hard and perfectly. I love to revel in a sad sack collection of music. It helps me think.

Learning by Perfume Genius Japan

The new album is a recent exploration for me. It has a lo-fi quality that may makes you feel almost as if this guy is a best friend. Hear the piano pedals, chair creaks and incidental brushes with the strings in the recording, and it’s as if  you’ve been sent a cassette demo from a dear friend that just needed to express something especially for you.

It’s deep y’all.

I don’t even know that I can do it justice.

Wonder what it would be like to see this beautiful music come to life in person? You and a friend could know, and in probably in the best location possible — the Masonic Lodge at  Hollywood Forever Cemetery, a beautiful spot for such a lovely experience. It’s next Tuesday, October 23.

I listen to "Impossible Soul" by Sufjan Stevens. The night before my father passed away, I saw Sufjan at the Wiltern with one of my best friends, and it was beautiful. The entire next day I had The Age of Adz on repeat. That night, I found out he passed. "Impossible Soul" is linked in my brain to the happiest memory I could've had before such a life-changing event, and throughout the song I get to both drown in melancholy and be inspired to get up and beat it and be strong in the face of all of the awful things that could be going on. It's perfect.

Oh my God. I'm listening to that song right now while reading your comment. I also went to see that Age of Adz performance at The Wiltern and it was incredible. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Isn't it crazy to have a work of music take you somewhere so strongly. That song has so many pace shifts that it really represents what hurt and healing can feel like, and I love how it resolves in the end.

      Thanks for sharing.

My favorite sad song of late is Metamorphosis I by Philip Glass. (Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=il4VDf-ugPI). I first heard it on an episode of BSG and instantly "connected" with it, almost as if I had heard it before. In the GOOGLE world we live in I was able to find it minutes later.Once I had it I played it on repeat for days. I usually never listen to music while writing but I was able to have this song on while I wrote a 90 page paper for my PhD program. I can *still* listen to it for hours on end and for the first time in my life I feel I understand the beauty of both the song itself *and* the "notes that aren't being played." The pauses in this song are deep and reflexive. Others commented on this link, in particularly, that the woman didn't play it with "feeling," but I disagree. This rendition is exquisite! Finally, no conversation about Philip Glass would be complete without this (you'll "get it" after about 15 seconds): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T251H4ggVn0 Enjoy.

Lately it has been Perfume Genius and Jeremy Messersmith, but ultimately I go to "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" by The Smiths and anything with Otis Redding…

I listen to the new XX album. Start from track 1 "Angels" about being in love…and move through the album as the songs become increasingly about distance and heartache like "Sunset." I think we have all been there. in love and then in the moment when you fall out of love. or you realize someone has fallen out of love with you.

Amy Mann comes to mind. Her voice is sweet, her songs seductively depressing. But they have a bit of wit and humor too.

I particularly like her Christmas album "One More Drifter in the Snow" because it captures a certain bittersweet melancholy that I think many people feel that time of year but don't always admit. It's one fo the few Christmas albums I will listen to because I find it soothingly honest. If I had to pick one song from that album it would be "Christmastime."

Also, she has a cameo in "The Big Lebowski" – you can't go wrong. :)

K's Choice – Dad, the song throws me over the edge if I'm already feeling blue. If I just want to make myself miserable I'll listen to it. If I'm happy and I need a downer, that's the one.
