Director Emmett Malloy on Chet Baker, Kurt Vile and More

Written by

As a filmmaker, Emmett Malloy made a big splash with seminal surf film “Thicker Than Water” (the soundtrack is one of my all time favorites), and went on to direct a slew of music videos, commercials, an incredible documentary on the White Stripes (“Under Great White Northern Lights”) and the recent “Big Easy Express” which captures a weeklong tour by train with the bands Mumford and Sons, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and the Old Crowe Medicine Show.

It’s obvious music is a big part of his DNA (he also co-founded Brushfire Records with Jack Johnson), but his Guest DJ Project set gives you a glimpse into his personal life.

He begins with a couple heartbreakers, including a gorgeous Chet Baker track, and ends with two newer artists (Kurt Vile, Alexander) that are catching his attention.

It’s a well rounded list and well worth a listen, whether you’re familiar with his work or not.

Emmett Malloy Guest DJ Project Set List

1. Chet Baker – I Fall in Love Too Easily
2. The Magnetic Fields – No One Will Ever Love You
3. George Harrison – Apple Scruffs
4. Alexander – A Million Years
5. Kurt Vile – Jesus Fever
