Actress Elizabeth Banks (Hunger Games/ People Like Us) is Our Guest DJ

Posted June 29, 2012 by | 4 Comments | 8,001 views]

It’s funny how you feel like you know people just because you’ve seen them in a bunch of movies and perhaps read about them in some celebrity magazines  (not that I would look at those. Ok, only in the doctor’s office).
But when I booked Elizabeth Banks to come on the Guest DJ Project, I assumed she would be super cool, smart and funny. Low …

Last Night in LA: Sebastien Tellier and MOre

Posted June 29, 2012 by | 1 Comment | 4,756 views]

Last night was another one of those great nights to be a music lover in LA.
The Westside had a rawkus dance party with KCRW’s own Jeremy Sole and Music Director Jason Bentley at the opener for The Hammer’s Made in LA Biennial. (Which is a fantastic exhibit, I must say.)
Silverlake’s Los Globos had a leftfield electronic goth seance with Pictureplane, Soft Metals, and White Car.
And Downtown LA experienced a …

From KCRW DJ Tom Schnabel (pictured above with Ariana Morgenstern (far left) and Paul Simon):
Most of you know the “Graceland” CD and its significance. It’s now the 25th anniversary and there’s a film based on Simon’s return to a changed Johannesburg called “Under African Skies”.
What most people don’t know is that we at KCRW had been sending Paul Simon cassette tapes of African bands …

Jimmy Cliff Live on KCRW

Jimmy Cliff by Larry Hirshowitz

When I moved to Los Angeles 12 years ago, I had three CDs I played on repeat as I went through the trauma of leaving the lovely city of Austin and moving to a giant metropolis where I knew no one. One of them was “The Harder They Come”.
I didn’t actually see the movie until last year (crazy, I know!) but those songs built …

Tame Impala – Tease Us With a Glimpse Into Their Lonerism

Posted June 28, 2012 by | 1 Comment | 4,373 views]

Yesterday, Tame Impala released a kaleidoscopic minute long clip featuring what is no doubt new music from the group. As teasers go, it is a perfectly dizzying thing, offering little to no context for any of the imagery and going from stoned silence to blasting us with a sonic loop that sounds like the noodly bridge of a new lysergic opus.
The album is called “Lonerism” and comes out on …

Blues and Soul at the Bowl This Sunday with Headliner Ben Harper

Posted June 28, 2012 by | 2 Comments | 3,424 views]

Summer is here again, knocking on our door, urging us to come out and play. What a pleasure it is to oblige in a place like Southern California. How fortunate an advantage that KCRW tends to its roots in such a magical place. And how fortunate for me to participate, invite family and friends, and enjoy music and fellowship under the stars as KCRW’s …

Various Productions: Artist You Should Know

Posted June 28, 2012 by | 5 Comments | 3,673 views]

Various Productions is quite mysterious until you do a little digging – mostly because their name is pretty much un-googleable.  The London-based group started releasing music in 2002, but I just discovered them this week.
Jason Bentley was turned onto their new song “The Sea” by a friend. It had premiered at a show for artist David Bray aka Bonesy, an illustrator who designed the …

ILLLS: Playing on Prefix

Posted June 27, 2012 by | 9 Comments | 5,123 views]

Playing on Prefix is a feature on KCRW’s Music Blog in which writers from the eclectic music site Prefix hip you to what’s coming out of their computer speakers each week.
Oxford, MS is a small Southern city with a bit of a mixed identity. The city simultaneously plays host to the campus of Ole Miss–which includes William Faulkner’s home– and just a stone’s throw …

Made in LA Music Series at the Hammer Starts This Thursday!

Posted June 27, 2012 by | 2 Comments | 7,320 views]

We’re doing things a little differently at the Hammer Museum this summer.
The Hammer is shining a spotlight on emerging and under-recognized LA artists in their upcoming Made in L.A. 2012 biennial exhibition so KCRW DJs will do the same – while paying respect to the classics — when they take up residence in the outdoor courtyard seven consecutive Thursdays from June 28 to August …

Ariel Pink and Dam-Funk Make a Psych-Soul “Baby”

Posted June 27, 2012 by | 3 Comments | 4,111 views]
ariel pink

“Baby” — a cover of Donnie & Joe Emerson’s teen psych-soul nugget – is the first taste of LA underground stalwart and lo-fi genius Ariel Pink‘s forthcoming follow-up to his gorgeous and critically acclaimed “Before Today“. To achieve just the right coastally sun-drenched level of melancholic longing, Ariel Pink employed LA’s funk prince Dam-Funk to assist on vocals.
Fit for a dawn drive through Tarantino’s …
