When I first encountered the video to The Neighbourhood’s super-catchy track “Sweater Weather”, I wondered exactly which neighborhood they might be from.  It turns out they live not that far from KCRW’s studios, a mere 45 minutes away in Thousand Oaks.

This young quintet has sparked something that is making them an instant favorite among all those who hear them, with KCRW DJ Anne Litt declaring the track the “song of the summer” and regular spins on Morning Becomes Eclectic.

Watch the video for “Sweater Weather”:

Lead singer Jesse Rutherford started playing drums and singing at age 13, played in a hardcore band and eventually got into hip hop, a heavy influence on The Neighbourhood’s sound.  As far as writing his lyrics, Jesse said, “It happens very naturally, when I write while I am rapping over the melody.” He has an amazing flow and his phrasing is very intriguing.

Also, intriguing is the band’s logo – an upside down house. I asked him about that unusual symbolism.

“I wanted something that was iconic that could fit in a thumbnail default picture for social networks. I thought of just a plain house, and then decided to turn it upside down. Half because it looks cool, and half almost humorously. I thought about the band Trash Talk’s logo, and also how the inverted cross is so popular. I feel like turning something upside down really is significant of my generation. It’s punk.”

I could not agree more.

I saw them at Great American Music Hall in SF a few weeks ago; I was so excited about the show and got their really early to make sure I could catch them. I was really disappointed.

Like, they're singing love songs, and lead singer kept trying to get the crowd all amp'd which I thought really odd; his stage presence didn't match what he was singing about. He even flung water onto the crowd at one point – it was just odd. I hope they get better at it.

I really like this bands style and can't wait to hear more. Their single on their website is so catchy! Interesting about the stage presence though. Maybe they will get better with time? Looking forward to checking them out live w/ Temper Trap this fall.

Fell in love with this band after hearing Sweater Weather! They have a great short video of some tour footage, using the same black-and-white idea they use in their music videos :) http://bit.ly/QzRxNF

Female Robbery is a great song and the accompanying video is a good match! I'm envious of Amber seeing both them and Temper Trap live!

Love the chill vibe. Saw them twice with Paul Banks this week. Reading the other comments, I just wanted to say their stage presence matched their songs perfectly. Very chill, nothing distracting or crazy. Lead liked using the mic stand as a prop. Some sexy hip thrusting :) hadn’t heard of them before these shows. Definitely going to keep them on my playlist.
