Throughout Memorial Day weekend I had one album on repeat. I didn’t plan it this way. In fact, if I would’ve judged it by the first song on the album, I wouldn’t have listen to it even once. That would have been a big mistake.

It’s “Generals”, the sophomore album from The Mynabirds. Their debut “What We Lose In The Fire We Gain In The Flood” was a markedly more meditative effort – gorgeous and soulful but not nearly as fun as what they’ve come up here with the help of producer Richard Swift (who is already having a knock out year having joined The Shins!). Check out the “Body of Work” below.

I love stomps and claps and this album let’s you dance your blues away. It’s a protest record and frontwoman Laura Burhenn has said it’s her way of dealing with years of political frustration.  The Omaha-based singer split from her previous band Georgie James to form The Mynabirds in 2009 and went into the studio to record her latest release after a year on the road as part of Bright Eyes touring band.

They’ll be in LA for a date at the Satellite on July 31. I can’t wait to see these songs live.
