While most music fans were away at Coachella this weekend, I was a bit afraid to do my normal round of CD roulette where I throw on whatever random CD I grab from the stacks of stuff people have sent me. I just couldn’t take any huge musical disappointments, on top of my jealousy over not seeing Pulp in the desert (and many other bands).
SO I listened to a lot of Faces, in honor of their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, the new Soul Cal compilation I talked about last week, and I tested out only one newbie: The new album from Montreal trio Parlovr.
From the first track, I was IN. Now this is what I’m talking ‘bout! Super catchy and slightly punk jangly rock that just made my day. They list The Pixies, Flaming Lips, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, Steely Dan, Rita Mitsouko, and Nirvana among their influences just to give you an idea.

Even the slower numbers really got me. “You Only Want It Cause You’re Lonely” grew on me the more I listened and the lyrics are great.

From the band:
“The whole record is about remembering, and pining over relationships and all the different shapes they take throughout one’s life,” said keyboardist/vocalist Alex Cooper. “Heartbreak, infatuation, teenage love, old-age regret, faded feelings.”
The album is called “Kook Soul” and will be out May 15. I love it and hopefully you will too.
